The following extract is from a letter from a very intelligent gentle? man residing near Vicksburg, Missis? sippi, who enjoys the amplest facili? ties for obtaining correct information on the subject of which he writes. Those interested in the cotton crop may rely upon bis statements : "I have never seen crops look finer .where the seed were good. But much old seed was planted and has failed to come up. Mr. E-has, for example, plowed up and replant? ed 300 acres. He has uot yet finish? ed, and many are in his fix. It is now raining very hard, and has been doing so ever since last night; and I have little doubt that the West is en? countering the same trouble. With us the high water is a terrible danger and curse. The South is almost en? tirely overflowed and tho rivers high and rising; and a flood from the North coming down on the top of all, increased and sustained by heavy and disastrous raina The crops are so late that weed!, grass, and cotton must all come rp together, and the lan ter, stinted in labor and injured y grass and weeds, must fail. *The present overflow cannot nov? :bly run off in time to plant the undated lands in cotton, and out dependence will be in corn. It a rare occurrence that cotton plant later than the present period oi e year yields moro than half a rop, and the overflow will be upon for weeks to come. During an ex? perience of over thirty years in the South, I have r?ver known so large an amount of water to fall in the month of April as has fallen in the m<- ith just n?sset Such is also the experience of ill I have conversec with. May (now just commenced) is bountifully 'supplying us with tht ..music of "falling waters;" and if she continues the strain, Southern peoph will dance from another cause than joy. I only hope that rain will cease and' give those not overflowed a last : Chance to clean their cotton.
