- HAWTTS OP VroTOK ll roo.-Victor Ting? rises, -winter and summer, with -the SHU. Ho lights his lire and makes his coffee; then, he writes, reads or oomposesr?until ll, and during that "time no <>ne troubles him in his medi? tations. At ll, whatever the tempe? rature may be, ho goo? out on tho terrace of tho house, which is on th? same level' as his room, and undies long ablutions with cold water. Then coin?s the breakfast hour, devoted to family chat and the reading of news? papers and letters. This meal gene? rally lasts for au hour and a half. Then the poet takes long walks across tho island. Ho works while walking, and often stops before tho points he specially admires. He is not much given to eating. His table is simply set, and he is always satisfied with the dishes before him. Although he "nas a good appetite, he is moderate, and no one can say that he has seen him commit the least excess. Victor Hugo goes to bcd carly, generally about 10 o'clock. Pens, ink and paper are placed on a table nigh him. Often in his broken sloop, he jots down the thoughts that cross bis mind. Sometimes he writes in tho dark, and makes hieroglyphics that, iu tho morning, he alone can de? cipher. In New York city there are 15,000 dram shops and "300,000 drinkers, each drinking two gills of liquor per day --300,000 barrels a year. This quantity would make a r?servoir 000 feet long, 50 feet wide, and G'i feet deep, and could float four largo ships in full sail. At 809 per barrel, it amounts to $18,000,000. Out of 700 cases t ried before the Court of Special Sessions, last year, not more than 94 were sober when arrested. Paupers in the city cost $4,000,o?Q a year. "Jane, has that suri, rel low'cleared off tho snow from tho pavement?" "Yes, sir." "Did be clear it oft'with alacrity, Jane?" "No, sir; with a shovel." Yon can do so m A H?
