A resolution was adopted declaring that whereas the people of Alabama have given unmistakeable evidence of their loyalty, they therefore pray that the President wilfe^thdraw the troops from the State. 'W% . ; The Constitution as amended was - adopted. * The resolution of adjournment pro? vides that the Convention may be called together by the President of the Convention on or before the 24th of September next. . -~ . WASHINGTON, September 20.-^1 matter what the opponents of t President may say, the action of t conventions thus far held in the Sou meets with his most hearty approy The instructions given ' privately Governors-Sharkey, Parsons and Pei by the President, have been carri out almost to the letter, while 1 general conditions for the "Resto ti?n" of the States, as* set forth in i Executive proclamation, have bi faithfully observed. The Preside therefore, could not do less than dorse the action of the conventio but this much he has done. PHENS.-A Columbus^ Georgia, paper j says We have JJ tiawKoB to make ex? tracts of a letter from A. H. Stephens to a gentleman bf this city. The letter is dated Fort Warren, Boston Harbor, Massachusetts, August 31, 1865. In his letter Mr. Stephens says: ? * * - * ."I am nc - in- much bet? ter health |&an when * wrote to you. The relenffe from close confinement and removal from the quarters in which I. was first placed, and being put in others more comfortable, have been of great benefit to me. I am now almost, if not quite, as well as I was when I came here. "I sdi by thc papers of this morn? ing that ?my brother, Linton Ste? phens, left Washington yesterday for this place to see me. It is also re? ported that I shall probably be re? leased on parole. This is cheering news to me. THE DESTRUCTION OF RECORDS.-A correspondent of the Charleston Cou? rier says: 4 'The late struggle has unquestion? ably entailed upon us and our poste? rity a long train of evils. We are only entering upon the threshold of a penal experience which will be pro? tracted into coming years. The loss of public records of the Stytte may be classed among irreparable disasters. In this particular. South Carolina has greatly suffered. The State'records and other papers of importance are gone forever. Some of the districts -Clarendon, for example-have had the entire contents of the district offices destroyed. Titles, deeds, wills, judgments and decrees have disap? peared in' the flames of war. How much of confusion, how much of liti? gation, how much of perplexing em? barrassments, and, perhaps, of injus? tice and fraud, may . not all this in? volve?" A rather serious riot occurred at Memphis last week, arising from a white man striking a negro whom he found beating a small boy. The white man took refuge in a livery stable, which was soon surrounded by excited and angry negro soldiers. The white man finally escaped by rapid running. He was closely pur? sued, and fired at a number of times. The term Fenian is derived from the Gaelic word Fiann. In the anti? quated Golic it is written Fiand. It was a name given to an order or class of professional soldiers among the Pagan Irish, long before the Christian era. In ordinary time;* the Fiann consisted of three legioLs; in each legion were three hundred men but in war there were usually seven legions. The New York Tribune says: A New Orleans letter informs us that Mr. Short, the owner of the mansion occupied by Governor.
