98TH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE NEW YORK LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY Th? "Reserve Fund." The followi g explanation is all that is requi? site for the complete understanding of the re? port by thoeo not conversant with tho subject: The ''reserve" fund of a Lifo Ir.suranco Com? pany is that sum in hand which, improved at a Riven rate of interest, will be sufficient, together with future premiums to bo paid, to meet ell obligations as they become due. If a company has the required tum for reserve, it is solvent and can continuo business; if it has not, it is insolvent aod tho law will interfero with its continuance. Ol course the size of the reserve required depends very largely upon what rate or interest is assumed. The higher that rate is assumed to bo, the faster the fund will accumulate at compound interest, and hence the smaller the present sum in hand may be; the lower the tate of interest, the more slow the accumulation, and hence the larger the re nerve required must be. Massachusetts has adopte-d? per cent, interest as the standard used for determining the required reserve; the state of Kew York adopts a lower standard, namely ii per cent, interest. Hence the reserve of a company, and its surplus, if any, as mado in the official reports of the insurance depart? ments of the two States, do not agree; bat if the New York standard ia sate, the Massachu? setts one must be safer, and the New York Lifo therefore employs tho Massachusetts one in making its own calculations, that being the highest standard used. Thus, by tho Mas? sachusetts standard of interest, the reserve of the New York Life was $16.841.177 on the 1st of January. 1872, and its suplus over all liabilities $1,488,134, as computed and published in the Company's regular annual report. But if the rate of interest to be hereafter realized is as? sumed at tbe N tw York rate, 4? per cent,, the reserve is $15.685,000 and the surplus cor.se qujnrly $2.644,311. The pol'cy of the New York Life is, to establish and maintain perfect security above ail other things. Cist of Metiers. The United atares supreme court, m the case of the Northern centrai Rail? road vs. Jackson, (see 7 Wallace, supreme Court U. s., page 267.) decided thar, when a railroad mortgage ls a joint one, on property lying In two or moro States, thc bonds secured thereby are not liable to be taxed by either of thc .states; and the same principle relieves them (rom taxation by County, City or Town? The Charlotte, Colum? bia and Augusta lion ts are secured by a Joint mortgage ou property lying tn North Carolina, south carolina and Georgia. Dear Slr-Some time ago 1 had the honor to re? ceive by express specimens or your "Meat Juice" for trial. I have not thus far acknowledged yo? kind communication tor the Blmplo reason that I never certify to things of which 1 know nothing. J have, in the meantime, tested your "Prepara* Hon," lolly and oautlously, and the result of my experience has been, that In all cases where sup? port ls demanded, whether in the teething child or the adult worn down by disease, your "Preps-* ration" has, under my observation, proved far more efficacious than all the farrago of farina? ceous articles and so-called extracts, which often do more harm than good. I am, very respectfully, your obedient servant, E. GEDDINGS, M. D. Mr. M. s. VALENTINS, Richmond, Va. CHARLESTON, S. C., September ll, 1872. MK. M. S. VA LB STINK : Dear Mr-1 have made quite an extensive trial of your "Meat Joice" dnring the past summer, particularly lu those protracted and exhausting due ises Incident to Infancy and childhood, so familiar to our Southern physicians. The trial has resulted la a preference for your "Meat Juice" above all the Extracts which I have hither? to used. So rar, lt has tully come up to all that has been claimed for lt, and if Its preparation ls conducted with the same care, and the purity of the materials maintained as heretofore, I have no doubt Its use will oe greatly extended. VALENTINE: Dear Slr-During the past summer I hare had a full opportunity uf testing your "Preparation of Meat Joice." particularly amongst children suf? fering from Darrhoea from "Teething." I snd that as soon as they lose their appetite and com? mence to deteriorate generally, your Preparation administered ls well retained and mou often en? joyed by the little sufferers. They improve rapidly in health and strength. Other preparations are not so easily tolerated, on account of their un? pleasant odor aud taste. I consider the contents of your little bottle moat invaluable in all acute wasting diseases. Very respectfully, W. M. FITCH, M. D. Dr. S. Barach, of Camden.
