TO TBE EDITORS OF TBE NEWS. Please give space io your columns to the following exquisite tribute to the "learning and genius" of woman, from the pen of Mrs. Caroline Gilman. It was read for the first time to the ladies composing the "Sewing 8oclety ol the Unitarian Church," herding their anniversary meeting at her residence, January 7, 1873. The freshness and vigor of | Its style prove conclusively that physical In? firmities and gathering years have in no wise Impaired the intellect, or dimmed the Imagi? nation ot the poetess. L. A. 8. The following ls the presentment : CBABLESTON S. C., January 18. To Ats Honor George Lee, Judge of the.Crimxnal Court, County oj Charleston: . Tbe grand jnry respectfully report that they entered upon their duties wirb, due regard to tbe importance under the sacred oath adminis? tered to the jury, the grand inquest of this county. Faithfull1- and with all diligence they review, ed the various indictments presented by tbe solicitor, ?.nd carefully to k and weighed the testimony in every case, and rendered a return of "True bill" or "No bill" in strict accordance witb tho testimony presented. The solicitor having no farthor indictments, tbo grand jury proceeded to inspect tbe public offices. J bey first visited tho county auditor's department. Tbere being great complaint made against the present assessments ot real estate, they were informed by the corni-y auditor that a new board of aeseaors would enter upon their duties in Joly next, and the jury would urge on that board the policy and aud necessity of assessing tbe real eatate ou the basis of its marketable value. The Jail was inspected, and they found no change since their last presentment, the build? ing requiring immediate repairs, which the grand jury strongly recommend and urge. Ibo grand jury desire to bring to tho atten? tion of the county, and to tho county commis sioners, tbe mutilated condition of manv of the r?!uable books of records now lying'in thc clerk ot court's offlcj, almost useless from want of binding and repairing. These record books consist ot the file bo >ks, decrees and report books, and contain a history ot property whieh has passed through generations ot our people, and a proper certification of titles and convey? ances oannut be reached without tbe-ir aid;and tbe necessity becomes apparent that they should be attended to as early as possible, before they become farther impaired irom the constant handling attending everv investigation of titles. The grand jury therefore recom? mend that tho couuty commissioners proceed at the earliest Deriod to have these books properly overuat.Ied and rebound la conclusion, the gland jurors tender their acknowledgments to ibo court fbi the uniform courtesy extended to th*rn, aud in closine their duties (this being their hat term) tbev respectfully surrender their trust as the grand inqeest of the oouuty for the last year. Respectfully submitted, J08 EPH P. HOWABD, Foreman Grand Jury, County of Charleston A PEACEMAKER PISTOLED. A Colored Han GeU Shot In Attempting to Separate Two Colored Inebriates.
