- Aa Amazonian Farewell. Well, ire have threaded through and through The gloaming' forets. Fairy Isles, Begirt In Cod's eternal smiles, As tauen surs in fields or blue; Some futile wars with subtle love That mortal never vanquished yet Some symphonies by angels set In wave below, lu bough above Were yours and mite ; but here adieu. Tet ir lt come to pass some days That you grow weary, sad, and yon Lift np deep eyes from dusty ways Or mart and moneys, to the blue And pure, cool waters, lele and vine, And bathe yon there, ana then arise Refreshed by one fresh thou; ht or mine, I rest content; I kiss your eyes, I Uss your hair In my delight, I kiss my hand to say, "Good night." Hay love be thine by snn or moon; May peace be thine by stormy way, Through all ihe darling days or May, Through ali the genial days or Jone, To golden days that die in smiles Of sunset on the blessed Isles. [Joaauir. Miller, in the January Overland. A TALLST OEMASTODONS. If M. Ootave Pavy does not succeed in finding the North Pole, or evon the open Polar Sea, wt??an still have the consolation that be has, iii a very early stage of bis voyaging, made s moat interesting discovery. The expedition left San Francisco in Jane, and late advices state that in the latter pu t of July the ex? plorers reached the shores of Wrangel Land, near the month of a great river, running from the northeast, and which is not Bet down on any chart. This M. Pavy considered as con? firming another of his theories that lhere ex? ista a great polar continent, and of which the temperature is sufficiently warm to molt the snow. The entrent or this hitherto unknown stream flows in an easterly direction Moog the i coast, with a rapidity of six knots an hoar. M. Pavy and party followed the plain of this river towards the north for about 250 miles. The plain is uniformly level, its width varies from fifty to sixty miles, and it is bordered by mountains of great height, with many perpen? dicular peaks. About eighty miles from tho month of the river the travellers found upon the plain the remains of mastodons, and on clearing away the snow in a place where tusks were visible, they brought to ligbt the enor? mous body of one of the animals of an extinct noe, in a perfect state of preservation. The skin was covered with black and streaked hair, very long and thick on the back: Thc tusks measured eleven feet eight inches in length, and wero curved np to a level with the mon? ster's eyes. The animal was in a kneeling Eosture, the front legs being bent, while the ind parts were deeply imbeded in the snow, indicating that the mastodon had perished in struggling to get ont of a mire hole or snow? drift. Professor Newcomb could not find any special characteristics distinguishing the ex? tinct mastodon from the elephant of to-day. He took from tho stomach some specimens of bark and herbs, the nature of which he could not analyze on the spot. For the space of many miles the plain was covered with the re? mains of mastodons, indicating that a numer? ?os drove of these gigantio animals had there perished, owing to some sudden change or convulsion of nature. The region abounds in - Polar bears, which devour the remains of the mastodons. _ _ J__ THE BESSEMER CHANNEL STEAMERS. A company has actually been formed ia 1>?. land to baila two steamers in which the pas? sage of the nnajinel can be made, it is claimed, without the horrors of sea-sickness. They are double-ended, and are propelled by four large paddle-wheels, two at each side. The great peculiarity of these ships is that each will con? tain a largo saloon, designed by Mr. Bessemer, suspended in the middle of the ship io such a way that it csn'be moved about in a longitudi? nal axis parallel to the keol. The motion of this saloon, which would be se: np when the vessel rolled if left free to move, will be gov? erned by an hydraulic apparatus, and will be completely nader the control of one man, whose duty it will be to keep the floor of the saloon, under all circumstances, in a line with a spirit level. Each steamer will be 350 feet long, 40 feet wide along the deck beam, and 65 feet wide across the paddle boxes. She will draw 7 feet 6 inches of water, the same as the present steamers, and will be propelled at a speed of 20 milee per boor, by two pairs of en- j ginee of the co ileotive power of 4,600 bones, i The centre s of the two pain of paddle-wheels will be 106 feet apart. The Bessemer saloon, ! which ia TO feet* long, 85 feet wide, and 20 fcot : high, will be in the middle of the vessel, and j will be specially adapted for ase in all states of ! the weather. Its gnat advantage is, that what- . ever motion the ship may take from the waves . -and this, from the adaptation of her form < passivity among channel waves, will be slight i -the saloon wifl be practically free from it. It : ^ is in the middle of the ship, se regards length I and breadth. The length of the vessels, the placing of the engines at the two ends of the saloon instead of in the middle, and the speed of twenty miles an boar, which they are folly expected to attain, an adduced as reasons why then will be but little rolling; while the latent and vertical movement? an nduoed to a mini mom. ExNEVOLKXCI 07 THE, ROTHSCHILDS. - Messrs, ; de Rothschild Br?then have sent $10,600 to be j applied to pay the winter's rent of poor persons i not actually paupers. They do this (and will | hereafter annually make a simt'nt ionation for the same object) in conformity i, the wishes j of their late father. What immense sams of ; money this family annually distributes 1 They ; support a Jews' hospital, a free dispensary and , medical offioa (the two last open to all creeds,) a boys' school, a girls' school, a retreat for aged 1 and infirm Hebrews. No woman in child-bed i appeals to them without receiving -peouniary i assistance; no parson ia diotnss applies to 1 them (if bis story prove true, and they keep 1 two Rabbis constantly engaged in investigating ! these applications) is not relieved; the Jewish , ecclesiastical authorities are authorised to draw upon tb em to rebe ve any distress among i their Hebrew brethren. If any general calami? ty fall upon a Hebrew community (for i instance, the expulsion of the Tows from Tan? giera during the Spanish invasion of Morocco, or the ill-treatment of H ebro wa in the Danu? bian Principalities) they instantly dispatch agents with large supplies of money to the scene of suffering. They Bupport a synagogue, with charitable institutions attached to it, at Jerusalem. Indeed, then is no end to their liberality. Soots, 5I)0?0, &t.
