He ls charged with' swindling leading dry goods firms of New York to the amount of six hundred thou? sand dollars. For one year he operated at th? expense of these firms without exciting their suspicion, and was thus enabled to amass the vast amount mentioned, or. its valne in goods. Lagrave has been twice married to re? spectable young women in New York, and both his wtvea obtained divorces from him. When, a few months ago, Lagrave's business crimes were discovered, he fled to Canada, and thence to Europe, where he took up his residence at Bagneres, in South France, where he was finally arrested by the detective who was sent In pursuit of bim. He WM accompanied in his flight by a woman, the wife of a rich lawyer of New York. This woman was originally an adopted daughter of the .famous opera singer, Mme. Lagrange, and was, before marriage, a pianist in a travelling concert company. When Lagrare was arrested this woman re malced in France.' Lagrave ls not more than thirty-three years old, and ls described , aa a person of decent, although dissipated, ap? pearance, who dresses In the height ol fashion, with a brown velvet coat, and with what might be called a jaunty air. He is now lu jail in default ot forty thousand dol? lars bau. Carefully gathered statistics recently pub? lished concerning the religious accommoda- j <] Hons, afforded ia the fourteen large provincial 11 towns of England which have by the census of 1371 more than one hundred thousand in-11 ?habitante, indicate that the Nonconformists J i are gradually but surely gaining in numbers, and that the Established Church of England can no longer be regarded aa the church of the majority bf Englishmen. Of these four? teen great towns there are six In which the Established Church has Increased more rapid? ly than other churches, and eight in which the other churches have outstripped the Es- j tabllshed Church. In Manchester, Salford, Leeds, Birmingham, Hull and Brighton, the increase o? sittings has been greater in the Established Church than in other bodies, but Brighton ls the only one in which the Established Church provides more than one half of the religious ac? commodation. In the six towns above named, although the Established Church ls In a better relative position than lt was twenty-one years ago, the number of Bit? tlogs, in five hundred and four Nonconformist places ot worship exceed those in the two hundred and eight places of the Established Church by seventy-seven thousand five hun? dred and fourteen, while in the other eight towns the State Church is clearly loBlng ground ia comparison with the Nonconform? ists. Taking the whole fourteen towns to? gether, lt ls found that while twenty-one years ago the Established Church provided 42 per cent, and the Nonconformists 68 per cent, of | the church accommodation, the former now provides only 40.2 per cent, and the latter has Increased Its proportion to 69.8 per cent. These statistics are Interesting in view of the agitation now going on in England for relig? ious equallty, aa it may be accepted as a cer? tainty that Englishmen will not remain con? tented to. recognize as the State Church an organization which does not represent the re? ligious faith of a majority of the population. IT WILL be seen by the official announce? ment, printed in another column, that THE CHARLESTON DAILY NEWS "is designated as the newspaper for the publication of all "legal notices, and official advertisements, "for the County of Charleston, under the "act of February 2 2d, 1870, entitled an act " to regulate the publication of all legal and "public notices." Tbe Pessimist* Mr. Scrnluce made ns a visit yesterday. Entering the sanctum in an aimless way, he rotated himself in an indefinite manner, somewhat like a dog about to lie down upon a mat, and ot length landed uncer? tainly in a seat. His eyelids were swaggy, the corners of his mouth drooped sorrow folly, aad his nose was pendulous and sad. By way of prelude be blew a doleful blast upon a dirty pocket-handkerchief, heaved a sigh ont of the basement of his waiscoat, and fombled nervously oar most valuable exchanges. Then lie began: The times were ont of joint. Things were generally unhitched, and the universe com? pletely dislocated. There , was something rotten in Denmark-nay, more, there was much decay in Denmark, and even the Baltic wits putrescent He bad always told us that the country was going to Hades, and now, he trusted, we knew it From his youth np he bad Been the country descend? ing sorely to the pit, and now that it was actually tn the pit he did hope that he, Scrn? luce, would be held guiltless. Had he not lifted his voice on the housetops and preach? ed in season and out of Benson ? We meekly told him he had. It was all very well for the newspapers to pretend to be cheerful, to look on the bright side, to encourage the people, and all that It waa their business. Bat he, Scrnluce, knew better. There was no bright side never had been, and never would be. All was black as night, as Erebos, as Styx, aa-as-aa the dirt io the depths of Tartaros, as the ink in THE NEWS inkstand. Tar, North Carolina tar, was pure and effulgent asa sunbeam compared to tho situation There was no hope, not a my, not a spark, not a scintilla-none whatever. The jig tv aa np, the dog was dead, the play was over, the concern was busted, the fire was . ant, the kettle upset, the devil to pay and t no pitch hot-didn't we think so t i Wo had not, bat we woald, most cheer- 1 rally-to gratify Mr. Scrnluce. Look 1 Grant elected, horse disease, lire ( in Boston, barning of tbe Bienville and < Missouri, gamblers playing hob at the Co- i lumbia I' air, and silver premiums for the best and most significant things there? to. K. C. Barkley's sharks' teeth and jaws truly the end of the world was at hand, ind Mr. Sendace lifted up his dirty pocket landkerchlef and-wept? No-blew bis pendulous nose again. Mildly we suggested that the case might De subjective and not objective, and hinted bine pills, mustard root baths, and a ticket lo the Charleston Dramatic dab. Bat he I [ gyrated abjectly out of the door, and was 11 seen no more. ??The New Southern Policy.' Under this bead the New York Herald's Washington correspondent telegraphs un? der date of Friday last that "the President, i "in his next message to Congress, will re- i 'view the operation and effect of the Ka- 1 .Klux legislation, and ask Jor a repeal of ( 'such parts as are notably oppressive. , "There Beems no room to doubt that a gen- c "er?os and conciliatory policy will be pur- f "sued by the administration . toward the 1 "South during the next Presidential term, J "and it is highly probable that a repreaen " ta ti ve oftbat section will be placed in the "new Cabinet." I c I The Baptists and Boston. ? - c The WelBh Neck Baptist Association, [ which was in session at Darlington at the ;ime of the Boston conflagration, received -be tidings or the great calamity with the v warmest expressions of sorrow and sympa- t ?by. The following resolution was adopted : a "Resolved unanimously, That we extend to ?ur brethren and their fellow-sufferers of the City of Boston, under the ?pressure of the recent terrible calamity, our prayerful and I? heartfelt sympathy, and that this resolution b be published lu THB CHARLESTON NEWS and the Watchman and Reflector of Boston." A handsome collection was immediately taken up, and tho proceeds sent to the 3tricken city. S>hQ Gobbling Process. Bussia in'Asia has always been aggressive. Chat Empire extends now from the Baltic Sea 0 the Sea ol Okhotsk, and is gradually ab 1 or bin g territory after territory of those States bat bar her progress to the Arabian Sea and british India. In 1868 the Chief of Khokand, IXXEJ 3V LI r?AVLJ?,. :1 v laving been defeated by the BuasianB, ceded i portion of his kingdom. In 1869 the Emir sf Bokhara, after the battle of Bamarcand, med for a treaty with the Empire. Though nominally Independent, both Khokand and Bokhara are now really parts of Busala. In 1870 the Russian Government began to make Domplalnte agalnat the Khan of Khiva, These have continued up to the present time, in spite of all the efforts of the Khan to pleaee his powerful neighbor. It ls the old story of the muddy stream, the lamb and the wolf. The Khan has entered into a treaty of commerce, allowing free trade to Russian merchants, through his dominions, and haa given his pro? tection to their caravans. Bussla, however, ls only walting a pretext to place the territory ot the Khan at her disposal as are those ot Bokhara and Khokand. The Price ot Oas. New York is complaining that "the price "charged for gas In that city, as compared with "the charges made in English cities and In some "cities OB the Continent, seems extravagantly "high." In London, gas costs eighty cents per thousand feet; in New York, three dollars. In Manchester the price ls sixty cents per thou? sand feet, and in Liverpool even lees. It ts true that coal until lately has been somewhat cheaper In England than In this country, but the difference has not been such as to acoount for the divergence in price. The gasworks of New York city are Immense, and until lately have been monopolies. Their dally capacity is 23,000,000 of feet, with about 650 miles of mains. The companies Bupply the street lamps at fifty-three dollars a lamp, and the city pays for public llghtlsg nearly $1,000,000. So ex? orbitant have been the bills rendered, that Comptroller Green ls now disputing them and insisting on their reduction. A new company, the Mutual, has just been started there, and lt is claimed by Its friends, will supply gas at lower rates. ?l arrien. QUARLES-EWBANK?.-on the 7th Instant, by Rev. S. P.
