The contest on Congreasman at large, it ls believed, will be very close lo that Sute, and some Republicans, while conceding a Democratic Governor, claim they will secure the Republican Oopgress men who are apportioned to the whole State. lt may be added here that the Republican j "] leaden who are confident of Har tran fi' tlon state thai be will secure ten tb< majori cy In Philadelphia and five thous the r&Bt of the State, which will elect 1 fifteen thousand. The rival Radical factions have held conventions and made their nomint Tor county officers and members of the islature. Both tickets are before the pi That which is put forth by the Bowen lion is infamous; that of the Mackey fs has some redeeming points. But nt ticket is worthy of Conservative sopporl Charleston County there were, at the o? the last censas, 6685 white voters 15,129 colored voters-making a total of 21,814, o? which the white vote Ii than one-half. There are quite as many ored men,who vote with the Conserva as there are White men wbo vote witl Radicals. It is safe then to say that t ure in Charleston County about 15,000 publicans and 7000 Conservatives. ? ?roything, or can anything, be done toot the Conservative vote ? As the Republicen vote is more t loable the Conservative voto, the Conse Lives could not elect a third ticket, ev? Mackey and Bowen f'.ivided the Bspubl vote equally between them. And so exa division is practically Impossible. In darpen ier-Scott canvass Of 1870, howe the Conservative vote was 6980, and the publican vote 13,411-which would h idmitted of the election of a third legisla ind county ticket, if there hod been as mi Sapablioans on the side of DeLarge as on tide of Bowen. Three county tickets w n the field, viz : the Bowen ticket, DeLarge ticket and tbe Reform ticket, i he vote was : Jervey (Bowen) 13,2 ? . .iii " Jeorge Lee (DeLarge) 3569; and Mel cb Reform) 69?2. This was a fall vote, t he Conservatives stood no chanca. Tb utve been many changes in the com luring the past two years, and the a trug between.Bowen, and Mackey, wm be - nore close than that between Bowen s DeLarge in 1870. Nevertheless the p ^onderanoe on the ooo side or the other \ oe sufficient to defeat a Conservative lick even upon the assumption that a stn ticket were nominated, and tbe entire O lervatlve strength could be brought o The nomination of a third ticket would b vaste of time, of money and of votes, voald be a waste of votes,' because the Cc lervatives can do some good for tbemselv* ? they take a practical view or the sit cati ind bear ia mind Captain Cuttle's apb. o ri ai bab "half a loafs better than no bread, a 'the same remark bolds good with crumb; lackey and Bowen are crumbs-of ve ibid comfort. The Conservatives cannot elect a ticket heir own, but they caa elect either of I wo Radical tickets. One-half of the Co lervative vote would detormtue wbeth Mackey or Bowen shall wear tbe bays. B leitber ticket, as a whole, can be voU Or by any consistent Conservativa Tl inly way then ia which the Conservative an use their power to advantage, and elec he least objectionable of the candidate Iready ia the field, is by selecting a thin icket exclusively from the two Radicl Ickets. It mast be made ap exclusive! rom the two Radical tickets, because i ote cast for a third candidate is a vot ost. Nor is there any donbt that tbi eherne would be successful. Bowen ma; is.ve a slight advantage over his opponents n which case any candidate taken fron tis side would unquestionably be elected lat Mackey, at the worst, is not more that . couple of thousand votes behind Bowen, ind a half of the city Conservative vot< ast for candidates taken from the Mackey ide would easily elect them. We repeat that neither ticket is such as, inder normal circumstances, would receive, a whole or in part, the support of this ?aper. But we believe it to be the part of risdom to do the best weean under the lrcamstances, instead of continuing to ulk because nothing is exactly as we wald have it. We shall, therefore, present ) the public of Charleston Coonty a ticket lade up of candidates upon the two Radi? al tickets, and for this eclectic or coalition icket we shall ask for the Conservative ote. It will be better than either the lackey ticket or the Bowen ticket; be ause it will comprise the best of the can lidates on the two tickets. This is ali that ra can, for the present, expect. And it is pell worth the getting. Improving the Shining Hoar. The American publisher is accustomed to raking bay when tbe sun shines, and tbe .ppletone have accordingly rushed out a re? nnt of "A Waiting Race," by Edmond ates, who arrived in New Tork last week, ad has made his d?but as a lecturer hefore ie public. This Mr. Tates is the author of imeroas works. The list comprises : "My Ha a nts and their Frequenters," published 1854; "After Office Hours," in 1861; Broken to l-Iarness," a story, in 1864; "Ba .*ioe88:pf Pleasure;" "Pages In Waiting;" and "Banning the Gauntlet," a uovel, in 1865; "Kissing the Bod," and "Land at "Last,"- in 1866. He was joint author of "Mirth and Metre," published in 1854, and one of the editors of "Our Miscellany, '? 1857-58. He put forth in 1660 an abridged edition of the "Life of C. Mathews the "Elder," and a "Memoir of Albert Smith "and Mont Blanc." He is the author of several dramas, and served six years as mu. sical critic of the London Daily Neiost with which paper, and the Pall Mall Ga? zette, be is still connected. He was fori some time editor of Temple Bar Magazine, in which his first novel, "Broken to Har? ness," appeared, followed by "Land at "Last." He gave up Temple Bar to start Tinsley's Magazine. For some years prior to Dickens's death, Mr. Yates was the writer of the leading serial story in AU the Tear Bound, where appeared bis novel, "Black "Sheep," which was considered by Mr. Dickens to be one of the strongest works of modern fiction. He still continues faithful to An the Tear Round, and in it his story, the "Yellow Flag," is j now appearing from week to week. I For "A Waiting Race" there ls much I and little to be said. It ls lively and enter? taining, nnd so attuned as to snit the Fifth ' avenoodlea of America, but lt ls pitched in a low key, and will not be praised by any persons who desire that literature shall puri? fy and exalt the people. In plain words, it is the history of a woman whose gross mis? conduct and wilful lying, beautiful blonde as she is, make ber a horror to all decent people; while the foils are so "goody" that the reader is persuaded that those who are sour are good by- nature, while these who J are sweet aro good by misadventure. Tbe I novel ls not actually immoral, but it would be exceedingly stupid without its sugges? tive impropriety. As this hint will doubt? less cause "A Waiting li a ce" . to be read, it is just as well to say that lt may*be bought at Holmes's Book House for 75 cents. OFFICIAL.
