Queer Bits from Odd Placet. . _____ A new English work, called "The History and Law ot* Church Seats or Pews," contains some curious stories: At Cholderton, Wiltshire, is a pew six feet blgh, with glass windows in the door to enable the occupants to see the preacher, and other windows in the side to enable them to survey the congregation. At Merstbam, Surrey, (un? til very recently,) and at Mickleham, Surrey, wer) pews raised some feet above the level of the cold, damp floor, comforiably fitted, and possessing a fireplace and table, by no meaos uncommon examples. Such "pride of place" seems peculiarly offensive, even when the par? ticular locality be a private chapel annexed to the parish church. Such were the pews whose ostentatious smartness and luxury caused Corbet, Bishop of Norwich, to exclaim: "Stately pews are now become tabernacles, with rings and curtains to them. There wants nothing but beds to hear the Word of God on; we have casements, locks and keys, and cushions; I had almost said bolsters and pillows; and lor those we love the church. I will not guess what is done within them-who sits, stands or Hes asleep at prayers, commstu ?ion, Ac; but this I dare say, they are either to hide some vice or to proclaim one; to hide disorder or to proclaim pride."
