Condition and Prospects of f lie Town Value of Property -The Highland Park Hotel-The Fruit and Grain Crops. [FROM OUR TRAVELLING CORRESPONDENT.] AIKEN, Jnne 22. "The prospects of our little town are ex? ceedingly bright," remarked a prominent citi? zen of Aiken to me this morning; and this opinion seems to be born of facia. The town has certainly been greatly improved since the close of the war. Charming cottages and ele? gant villas have sprung up on every hand; and In no part of the State does real estate com? mand better prices. A good house with one to three acres of ground will sell readily for ten to fifteen thousand dollars. The resi? dences generally partake ol the attractive and airy cottage style, which has grown so much Into popular favor ol late years-a style which adults ol every conceivable shape. The town is clean and neat, fresh paint being abundant. ! It covers a_ area of about two square miles, Lut is not compactly built. Only a very small point can be seen from any one point; and thr I (stranger is continually surprised on his ran;-1 bles to find legant dwellings hidden behind clusters ol trees .which he supposed were be yo nd the ii nits. Probably more boarding-houses are to be fount4 In Aiken than in other towns of its size lu the Southern conutry. Nearly every I family "takes boarders." Good board is from two dollars and half to five dollars per day. A very large proportion of Ihe nest residences I are owned hy wealthy Northerners. The num ber 01 visitors increases every year. All have now left for the summer. The visitors book of the Aiken reading-room shows within a traction of seventeen hundred entries from November 1st, 1871, to April 1st, 1872; a larg er oumber than for any previous year. The I finest building In Aiken Is the Highland Park I Hotel; it stands on a high hill at the western I end ol the town. The ground plan is T shap-1 ed, about four hundred feet front, by two hun tired deep. It has a basement, two stones and a half, two piazzas extending the entire length of the front, and a neat little cupola on the centre. It containa one hundred and twenty rooms, all told. The panels of the tioorp, wainscot!lng, &c, are of native yel low pine, highly polished. The entire cost of the ground, building aud lu mi iure ls, in round numbers, one hundred I thousand dollars. The view from the cupola is magnificent. At tbe foot of the hill on which the hotel stands ls the truck ot the South Carolina Railroad, while stretching be-1 yond to the south and west lor twenty to | thirty miles Is a chain of hills covered with dense forests of pine, which, under the sun light, display every shade of green, lrom the lightest to the darkest. This institution is said to have netted the proprietors thirty thou sand dollars during the past season. I have lt from good authority, that every room on thex first floor has already been engrjed for the next season. It ls now closed for the Bum mer. The proprietors are two in number, citizens ol Connecticut. They advertise by selling photographs of the building to the guests, at prices varylDg according to size, tram twenty-five cents td two dollars. The Mayor of Aiken ls a Northern mon, the ic r mer i proprietor of the Aiken Hotel. He leit for I, some point North about a month since. The . last issue of the "Aiken Tribune" contains a summons for him to appear before a trial Jus? tice and settle a grocer's bill ot one hundred dollars and costs. The Aiken Hotel was sold for taxes last week at Blackville. Between the hours of one and six P. M. Ai- i ken is a very hot place, but the rest of the time it ls as pleasant as one can desire. The .' fruit crop around here is a failure; orchards ' generally will not give more than one-fourth the usual yield, and the quality of the fruit 1 wjll bo inferior. An exception should, how? ever, be made in regard to grapes, which promise to be 'very abundant, Reports from I, the cotton crop are uniformly good. They represent the cotton in this section as more 1 promising than lt has been lor some years at 1 this season. One or two planters have dis? covered lice In the'r fields, but they do not apprehend any material injury therefrom. The want of rain was supplied yesterday by a I refreshing shower. SFRITE.
