TO AHTBRTT8ER8. v- : _- '? The proprietors of THB NEWS and The Cou? rier find lt Indispensable * the accurate and prompt management of their business, and f or, the pro tee tkm of advertise rs, that the practice of sending advertisements from one newspaper office to the other he discontinued. They, therefore, give notice that no advertise? ments received at the one office will, in any case, be sent to the other. At the same time they beg leave to request advertisers to hand In their favors at as early an hour as possible, In order to facilitate their proper arrange meat, _ _ A Gem. The following beautiful sonnet, written by an obscure admirer ot the late Frederick: Dennison Maurice, the large-hearted and j large-brained English divine, ls worth careful reading: "Who bas not known some author, artist, saint, W?0S9 Image he has worshipped from afar. An attentive correspondent, who signs him? self "A Servant of Taxation," discourses thus moodily of affaira In Marlon County : 1. I reside in tbe cotton-growing section of Marlon, and lt ls my impression that there la not over-five percent more cotton planted this year than last . . 2. Not over twenty-five per cent, more fer? tilizers .used this year than last. There bas been more guano applied to the raising of grain this year than for several years past. 3. I am glad to. nay the .grain .prospect 1B fine, but I cannot with veracity say tue same in regard to klag cotton.- lor several reasons ; First, the plant is from five to six weeks later than last year, and hard bottom landa are not up as yet. Second, labor ia very scarce and high on account Otthe turpentine works-a good field hand can make enough In one day to bny bia. bacon for a week;, and, to tell the ( ' troth, our colored friends in this section are < 30t much looUned to work:-while they have , rations. Third, the working class occupy too much time lirtllklng about the coming elec- ; tlon. . All experience proves tbat lt is an up-hill business to make cotton with the present sys-1 ^ tem ot labor; and there are a thousand and 11 one inducements that will be held ont lo.de? range the laboring people during the summer and fall of 1873. All the fertilizers In the world 1 will not act wlthont the proper cultivation; t and, last but not least, there will be a short cot- t ton crop for 1872, and an o ver-crop of politics. P Report* of tile South Carolina Press The Marlon Crescent says : "We conversed |1 with planters from all sections ot the county, on Monday, and were pleased to hear better accounts than we expected. Corn Is doing well, and cotton, though late, ls beginning to crow finely. Bain, however, is again, needed In some places." - The Horrv News says : "The recent drought made it difficult for farmers to get their grain ' upland the- stand of corn, cotton and ric?is f: Very irregular. We have made inquiry from e nearly:; every section of the couoty, and hear f - that since the Jato showers plants that are up ?? axe,.looking weil and the prospect ls a fair .t average yield. Farmers are continuing to replants . I* Reports from ?eorgta. . I r . Since. the rains we have had charming |8 weather, and crops have ooma out wonder lolly. Corn Ls growing. rapidly, and cotton is doing satisfactorily to planters. On the whole, the prospect \? good, and hopefulness beams flrom every lace.- dtoerny Newa. ' 1 lo Crop prospects In Newton are much more I s flattering how than they, were a week or two I v agq.. There ia a good stand of cotton Io all parta of the county.-Conyefa Examiner. We learn .from Dr. Cheney, who has, during I a the past week, travelled extensively in Cen-1 d tral Georgia, that tbe crops of corn, cotton, wheat, Sc., are looking splendid. The oat crop; he considers a lai?nre. He conversed wltn intelligent planters in several counties, and found them quite jubilant over, the pres? ent prospects. Iq Houston County especially he found the corn crop unusually promising, much of lt being waist high and ot fine color. Some fields that be saw were nearly ready for lay lng by. While on our jaunt last week to Millwood-fourteen miles from Hawklnsvllle we saw many fields of corn In good condition. The stalks appear healthy and aa.It growing finely. There ls a larger, area of land devoted to this crop the present year than we expected to/see in this vicinity. Some fields o? cotton looked well, and mere seemed to be good stands generally where the seeds were plant? ed early. Those who failed te get their crop above ground before the drought began are troubled considerably for want of "stands." This class ls the only .one that has a riant to complain. Late rains have recentlyt?ma lu the surrour ding couatry, and crops, arenow I al doing ?ra?.-H'awJcinsviliB Dispatch. Most planters have planted sufficiently of I 8 corn this year, and though small, the stands are excellent and look well. With lavorable ruins during the month of June a good crop may be realized. The area of cotton ls about equal to last year. Guano used about the same, bat the crop, in consequence of six weeks drought, ls so backward that, even withfavorableroBUBBBi S ratur?, we do. not looJc for a larger yield than last y ear,-Talbot ton Standard.- . w.thinihe-past few days several showers have fallen in'this section, very materially Im? proving the general appearance of all field crops. Oats and .wheat have assumed a more promising aspect, while cotton and corn, which had begun to suffer from intense drought, creDow looking weil, though rather late. Most of the planters now have good stands of eolian even where they bad despaired of their seed germinating; and having done all they could for their crops during the drought, they are now ready for the change in the seasons, and eau cheerial ly proceed with their work. | gi Covington Enterprise. We are pleased to report at last a good stand of cotton. By reference to last year's doily record we find that our latest crops this year are only about two weeks later than last year. Colton chopping generally commenced M last year about the 15tu of May, and tbls year, v In ihe latest and replanted cotton, siding and fo crapping commenced on the 27th Inst., while et ta a DJ- had their cotton reduced to a stand and aweeped over,by that time. Our planters only require a little active, energetic work Just now , to nd the crop of the grass coming np, and I ?? ' they will, with fair seasons, make an average crop. Tea.days, with proper seasons, can bloom and boll enough cotton to make a good crop.-?fadison Appeal. V>;, . Reports from Florida. Columbia County, as far as heard from, Is suffering (rom the drought. The crops as yet are not badly injured, but a continuation of the dry,,hot weather that we have experi? enced for weeks will prove disastrous to the farming interest. The cotton crop ls not so great a sufferer as the other crops, as cotton lovea dry, hot weather.-Lake City Herald. The crops of Alachua County are now suf? fering for rain. We have not had a good rain for a month. The corn especially needs a ? good gracious shower, and we fear that ir lt aoes not come soon our people will make a very abort com crop, which would be a grave disaster Indeed.. Cotton is looking well. AU crops, we understand, are pretty clean. Gainesville Sra. After an extensive ramble through the country and numerous conversations with planters from various sections thereof, we now feel assured in stating ior general infor? mation that the corn crop.of Jefferson ls fully aa average one, and since the last week's frequent and refreshing showers tbe color is beautiful, and the appearance flourishing. As to the cotton, we are Inclined to believe lt much more backward than last year in May; but the "stands" which we examined are tolerable, and some few good. We hear of "squares* form lng, very often on that planted early, but a good deal of lt ls just above the ground, and some few bave not yet got tnrough planting.-Monticello (Jefferson Conn ^ fyi Advertiser. ka or Barrial Notices.
