The Bale did no', last more than twenty-five minutes, and the whole amount received was tweniy-five hundred dollars. -A. member of the staff of the New Orleans Republican recently questioned General Long Street concerning his views on the pending Issues. The general reviewed his own action In resigning from the surveyorship, and ex? plained why he could not consistently, as a Republican, sustain the party represented by General Grant. In his opinion, the Cincinnati nominees are the true Republicans, and, as snob, should receive the suffrages of the Re? publican party. -The Philadelphia Press concedes that the Democratic nominations in Pennsylvania are strong, and Colonel Forney writes that "lt ls folly, worse than folly, to suppose the Repub? lican, ticket can be elected as lt stands." He calls for the retiring of the objectionable can? didates, and urges that lt ls not yet too late to secure victory by bringing forward goc<t men. - The fact ls that the IVnnsylvanla elec? tion will have so much significance as a "straw" that the Bepubllcaus canuoc well afford to throw away any chances by running objectionable candidates. -Tho Italian Government la, lt is said, maxing' great efforts to encourage popular education among the Italians, and to overcome the effect of ita almost total neglect during the past two hundred years. In the army, education is compulsory, and the thousands ol discharged soldiers who have returned lo their native villages, are acting as the pioneers of culture. No soldier who is unable to read and write ls allowed a single day's furlough. A bill ls now before the Italian Parliament to make education compulsory throughout the country. -Mack writes from Washington a story of an unsophisticated gentleman from the West who recently dropped into the >aH of the House of Representatives to see the sights.
