Thursday night, ? colored youth, about fourteen years of age, stealthily entered the apartment of a lady residing at the Calder House. She gave the alarm, and a gentleman succeeded in capturing the in trader, who proved to be an old* offender called Joe Gibbes, with half-a-dozen aliases. He was turned over to the police, and, being brought belore the Mayor yesterday morning, was sent to the Home ot Correction f?i twen? ty days. ? * A GEORGETOWN FIRE COUPANT.-The Hes- , ton Fire Company, of Georgetown, S. C., ar rived yesterday afternoon by the steamer, and were escorted up through the streets by dele g?tions from several of the hand engine com? panies. The Hestons number about fifty men, in light leather bats, red flannel coats trim? med and laced wlih blue, and black pants. ' They brought their engine (hand) alone, and ' had lt handsomely decorated with flowers and ' wreaths. The machine was dragged up to Co Iambus street, and housed In the building of the Ashley, No. 9. FIREMEN'S PRIZES.-The prizes to be con? tended for at the tournament of the hand en? gines or the Fire D-p irtm-'nt, to take plate on Monday, were on exhibition yesterday ut the handsome silverware and Jewelry estab? lishment of Messrs. Carrington, Thomas & Co., oo King street. The first prize, for the "best time." consists of a handsome sliver pitcher, waiter and gob? let, all cosily and beautifully engraved. The county auditor, in another column, prints a list of some of the property so offered for sale, and it is urged that delin? quents who do not desire to sacrifice their lands proceed to pay up their arrears at once. Hayden, King street, from the makers, E. Howard A Co., Boston, Mass. It ls guaranteed to run lor ten years, and afford an accurate time standard. MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS.-Yesterday after? noon two- boys quarrelled at the corner of Columbus and Nassau streets, and appealed to their fl.-ts. One of them was handling the other pretty roughly, and had given him a severe cut on the cheek, when a policeman came up and proceeded to stop the row by arresting the combatants. A colored man, named Touey Washington, who was looking on, Interfered to see fair play, and hie out viciously at Clubs and Stars. The latter re? linquished his hold upon the boys, who escaped, and captured the admirer of lair play, who was forthwith locked up In the Guardhouse. The tray will be Investigated this morning before the Mayor. A BOAT RACE AHEAD-THE CAROLINAS THROW DOWN THE GAUNTLET.-A meeting of the Carolina Independent Boat Club was held i last evening. The subject of a race between the two clubs was discussed, and lt was re- , solved lo challenge the Palmer o Regatta i Club to a trial ot speed between the boats of the respectivo clubs. Mes>rs. Roland Alston, J M. Bryan and R. M. Means were appointed a ? committee to notify the Palmettoes ot this I action, and to make all necessary arrange? ments lor the race. This ls expected to take place on the second Saturday In June, and, as there ls but little doubt that the Palmettoes will accept the challenge of their juniors, we look for an exciting contest. The boats are both trim and keen, and of the same build, thal of the Independent Club being five feet i longer than the other. The Palmettoes, how ever, boast a crew whose skill and training they expect to counterbalance the advantage of their rivals. _ EXCURSIONS.-A moonlight excursion to aid in building a hall and purchasing a library for the Mechanics' Union, No. 1, of this city, will leave Market wharf ou Tuesday evening, at eight o'clock. TUE IBI9H VOLUNTEER RIFLE CLUB.-This sterling corps held a meeting at the Hibernian Hall lust evening, at which several applicants were elected members. CLUBS AND STABS.-Richard Fleming, fa-t drayman, was reported for driving his team too fast around the corner of Anson and MarKet street, Instead of walking, as required by the ordinance. He was flaed two dollars, with the alternative of twenty days in the House of Correction. Fine paid. A party who was reported for allowing water to be thrown from tho upper wlpdow ol his residence showed that the compliment was but too welt deserved by the person below. The latter did not appear in court, and the case was dismissed. Tne owner of certain premises up-town was reported for allowing one of the chimneys to take Are. He explained and was discharged. ON THE BATTERY-Since the last public parade, (the fifteenth amendment celebra- j ti on.) the old ?tanti opposite the Bathing House has been taken down, and, under u resolution of Council, a more pretentious structure 1B being erected in the western patt of White Point Garden, where the old flag? staff used to stand. This rouen old mast has also been pulled down. The floor of the new stand is flve feet from the ground, and it is octagonal in shape.
