XHE POET EOT AL RAILROAD. Endorsement of Half a Million Of its Bonds. We condense from the Augusta Chronicle the following report of the proceedings o? the directors of the Georgia Railroad on Wednes? day: Tue original proposition of the Port Royal Railroad wm? that the G?*orgla Road should j endois- $1,000.000 ol t he first mun caire bunds ? of tnVPoit Boval Ro*d. For this endorse? ment the Georgi* Railroad Compa-iy wa? io rewire $1,250.000 of the stock of the Port Boval Road, abaolufely. while a power ol'at? torney was to be given to the hoard of direc? tors ol that companv to vote $300.000 more of th- Block, thus uivlng :he Georgia Railroad a i cootroiline Interest in ihe Pori Royal Rail rond. The directors held a meeting on Wednesday and again took the proposition Of ?he Port R'>y*l Railroad Compnny into consideration. There were pr?tant President King ana Messrs. E. E Joues Edwd. R. Ware, A. Poullaio, J is. W Davids, L. M. Hill, Jo.-ia.ti Bloley. Meveus Thomas. Geo. T. Jackson, Ja-?. 8. Hamil on, il. P. S.ovail, D. E. Buller. Wm. H. Beese and Wm. W. Clark, of ih* bi ard. Three-Meters. Thoa, J. Burney, George Hill? yer and John Davidson-wore absent. Atierl discusing the inaner for ?orne time, the direc? tors, by a vote ot tea to three, dedded.to ac? cept the proposition. 'Judge Beese, one of the three voting nay, thrn no ifled the board that j application for an Injunction to preveut them from endorsing the noons would be made to a r> uri of law, and, in all probability, erunt ed. . Upon this the boara decidid to send a committee to confer with Mr. R. E. Rob? ina, of the firm ot Bobbins, Appleton & C\>., who was in an adjoining room, t . In - form him ot - what bad heeu ?tated oy Judge Reese. Mr. Bobbins finally decided that lt would be best for the Port Royal Rai road Company to accept the endorsement of $?>00. 000 of their bonds by the Georgia Railroad without a lawsuit, titan $l,000,n00 with lr. To the endorsement of this amount ot bonds, the stockholders .who had threatened to procure an injunction were not opposed. The coard, therefore, reconsidered their action, aud. unanimously accepted the second proposition of the Port Boyal Railroad Company, and entered luto a contract with lt, aa follows: The Geor? gia Railroad, on Ita port, endorses $500.000 of' the first mortgage bonds of the Port Royal . Railroad, Immediately, while) the | Port Boyal Company turns over $625, 000 ol Its stock to ihe Georgia Bail road, absolutely, and gives lt a power J of attorney to vote $900.000 additional) of atock. the power of atiorney to be i Irrevocable for three years, and the | Georgia Ral!road to have the option, at the end ot that lime, to purchase the stock at its market value. It will be seen that lt really places the Poi tR \\al Railroad under Control - ortho Georgia Railroad Company. We also learned that the subject of the Savannah and Charleston Railroad was before the board. This road was obtained control ot by Messrs. Robins, Appleton 4s Co., eome time since, tor the sum ot $100.000. These gentlemen offered tn rei i rqiii-h the road to the Georgia Railroad Company if they would pay the above amount, not ia coon, out lu bonds. The board appoint? ed o commit!ee, consisting ot Messrs. M. P. Bte vat;, J>. E. Butler and Geo. T. Jackson, to confer with Mr. Bobina in regard to the mat? ter, with Instructions to report at the June meeting of the directors. We understand that lt ia probable that ihe committee will report; iaborably upon the proportion, provided the th? condition of the road ls such as to warrant foch a conclusion. VOICE OE THE STATE PRESS. The Hope of the South. [From the Newberry Herald.] We can hardly believe that the Democratic Convention, with the lights before lt and the expression of sincere sympa' hy and hope - being developed all over I he Lind, will make j a party nomination. We honesty believe that the hope or ihe oppressed South, iles lo the election ot Mr. Greeley, and that he will be elected ir no such unfortunate contretemps ' li made. ?1,, Tho Beat We Cnn Elect. [From the Carolina Spartan.] Bo strong le our desire for the success of the Cincinnati ticket aa the best we can hope to elect, that we are wbnlly un wining to hazard to defeat hy any nom limitons on tbe | Brt of the National Democracy. The South B too much at slake In this issue to throw - away the weil grounded hopes which bave j been Inspired by this new movement, tor the j possible chances of a Democratic triumph. Oar Duty. [From the Orange.bnrg Tiaro ] There .Is some chance of an Independent *! Democrailc no min a> nm, which we look upon as Instiling to Grant his re elect lon. This we regard as the direst curse that can befall th?* South. This campaign must be fought out by nc under the black nae principle-party lin-s are of li lle moment to ns. who strugg'eior freedom fm m actual bondage, political and personal; and we mu?t enter the field assured that we must, win cr be forever l'su Another decade of Radicalized emancipation and the j day of Droep^rliynforS iU'h Carolina shall be j burled beyond mo vat lon. We sincerely hope thal no Democratic nominutlon will be made, and that Greeley will oe elected. AU Pnll Together. v [From th . E'lgefleid advertiser.] l?o doubt the time given before* the assem? bling ol'the Democratio Convention wl.l be well spent in the discussion ol the g ave ques- j lions that will come up before, that body. It la to be boped the greatest wisdom, the purest j patriotism, and*i he Quest feeling will ohurao terire the preliminary delibera'lons and final action ot the grvai National Democracy. We mast all-in 1 together-Democrats and Libe? ral Republicans. Ii there ls discord. Grant will cer'al 11 ly and Inevitably be re-elected. And then our country will have lost ali hope, and we must go down tinder the heel of the [ vena), grasping, unscrupulous, tyrannical, law-def} lng oppressor. Only On? Opinion in the South. [From th * Columbia Phoenix ] Sin ce ?be convection ls to meet, it becomes the Imperative duty of the South to secure ber proper abare of represent ai ion In lt, and to ?tlapeand.determine Ita action lc accordance i with ber views of what ls expedient and pro? per. There Is but one opinion in the South with regard to making Democratic nomina? tions, and that ls, that such a course would lo? sare the re-election of Grant, or whatever other 8oathern-hatlng Radical the Pnlladei - pb la Conven i ion may nominate. This, of all things, the South would wish to see avoided. MIK ANO LAL AND COMMERCIAL. itxporti ol tn? Week ending Blay IO. TC?DDSK.
