Governor Walker has refused to allow the bloody-minded militia of Virginia to pay their own expenses and be destroyed to the last man for the paltry sum of forty-five thousand dollars, and no Lowery. What, we repeat, is to be done? A thought, a happy thought, catapults us. Here is a chance for Barnum and the Re? publican party. Let them boss the job. In the City of Washington there is a man, a valiant man, the valiantest of men, and a master of the art of war. Let the clarion cali of the clashing cow-horn call him to the front. Let him put in practice his great | theory of attrition. As the molecules of an average sized brickbat are to the molecules of a piece of chalk no bigger than the end of yonr thumb, so will Ulysses Simpson Grant, with abeut two million five hundred thousand brass-buttoned, blue coated men, be to Henry Berry Lowery, solitary and alone, with his picayune army of pistols and his revolving rifle. Set Grant and bis army down at Greensboro', at a safe distance from Hennery Berry ry. There let | him sidestep to the left, if it takes him all summer, and half bis troops die of green persimmons, until he bas completely flanked Bobeson County. And now let him slowly and cautiously advance upon Hennery Ber ryry and gradually wear him out, till he sur? renders one pistol and one man at Scuffle town some time next fall, just before the Presidential election. This will eave Grant's bacon, avert a war with England about the Alabama claims; with Germany about the eale of arms; with Kassia about the indig? nity to Catacazy; with Spain about Cuba, and with the rest of mankind abont nothing. This will cover up Lee t and Stockiog and all other corruptions in a blaze of glory. And a very small percentage on the money which Barnum will make by showing Hen? nery Berryry, who is much too good and great a rascal to be haDged, will pay off the entire national debt, or a minute portion of it. _ About the Crops. A correepoodenr, whose letter we print elsewhere, is good enough to do his pat t in supplying the public with trustworthy infor? mation as to the condition ?fcd prospects o? J the crops in this State. -We think that our correspondent hardly does us justice in suggesting that the crop reports published io THE NEWS have been incorrect The Southern planters and farm? ers have for years been the sport of Northern speculators, who, by their influence in the money market, and their power of shaping public opinion, have managed to grow rich! while the hard-working Southerner bas made little more than a bare subsistence. This very season we tave bad a Etriking ex ample of the manner in which they ma? nouvre. Aa early as last Jane and July it was known that the cotton crop of 1871-72 must fall far Bhort of the crop of ?he preced? ing year. Every Southern newspaper teemed with letters and articles showing that the -crop could not exceed three or three and a quarter millions. The Northern speculators ridiculed these statements as a poorly planned scheme for running np prices, and the speculators contrived to keep down quo? tations until they had secured at least half the crop at much below its true value. As the receipts fell off, the staple sharply ad? vanced, and the New Yorkers candidly con? fessed that the world must expect a very small Bupply of American cotton. But to counteract the effect of this admission they are now flooding Europe and the South with circulars announcing that the crop of 1872-73 will be five million bales. In this way they are again forcing down quotations, and unless the planters throughout the South come forward and tell the exact truth, showing the backward condition of agricul? tural operations, and the practical impossi? bility of making this year a crop of either five millions or four, the New Yorkers and Liverpool men will shove cotton to fourteen or fifteen cents, and make other fortunes at our expense. We have understood the game of the cot? ton consumers from the beginning, and we have seen only one way of defeating them, which is to encourage in every way the pub? lication and dissemination of trustworthy information about the crops. For the last three seasons we have sent circulars, at the critical periods, to intelligent farmers and planters in the different counties begging them to advise us what was the area in cot? ton and in breadstufls as compared with pre? ceding years, and what were the condition and prospects of the crops. We asked for the information upon the broad ground that itewas necessary to the successful and - intel? ligent action of the Southern agriculturist, and could only be .obtained by concert or purpose. Perhaps one planter in twenty re? plied to onr circulars. We published their letters, and we contend that they gave our planters more specific and general informa? tion about the crops than bas been given by any other paper in the State. We have also asked the county newspapers to print every month a short statement of the agricultural work and outlook in their respective sec? tions, from which reports we might make up a similar statement for all South Caro? lina. So far as we know, not a single paper acted upon this recommendation. We matte these explanations with the pur? pose of assuring Mr. H. A. James and his friends that we shall do our best to secure full and accurate information in regard to the agricultural operations of the State.
