Yesterday witnessed an event which illus? trates what a society ol persone, animated by an earnest zeal and working for a common purpose, can accomplish. This was the com? pletion and dedication to the worship of the Almighty of the Plymouth Congregational Church, on the west side of Pitt street, one door north o? Bull. This church was built by the voluntary contribution oi the congregation ar d with such additional aid as the pastor might have been able to obtain upon visits to the Northern cities. The congregation were for? merly the colored portion of the congregation of the old Circular Church, and refer to their old connection with evident pride. After the de? struction of the Circular Church In the great Are of '61 and the building of the small chapel aftrr the war, the colored portion oi the congre gtalon formed a separate congregation under the pastorship of .afr. Merritt, of Massachusetts. They remained so for several years, looking forward to the time when they could build a suitable place ot worship, using meanwhile the hail at the Avery Institute. Last spring they were ready to begin building their church, and having purchased a spacious lot at the oorner of Bull and Pitt streets, the cor ner-stone of the new church was laid with propriate ceremonies, a full description which was at the time given in THE NEWS. The work, under the contrac tors, Messrs. Sawner and Ferguson, wat pushed* forward with energy, and hopes were entertained that the building would finished before the close of the year. The epidemic of last summer intervened, however and during its existence the work was sus pended. It was resumed with fresh energy with the cold weather, and was completed short time since. The church 1B a large wooden building with a lotty tin-covered roof. It neatly painted and well ventilated by windows with Venetian shutters at short intervals I'ong the sides. The main entrance is on the aast end towards Pitt street through a band some gothic doorway. The pulpit stands marched recess, slightly raft... at the west and. The body of the church 1B about seventy feet long and forty feet wide. It contains fifty-two pews of good size, with a wide sentral aisle, and one on either side next the walls. It has also a capacious gal lery at the east eni with tiers of seats rising one above another, and it can seat fully five hundred persons. It handsomely lighted by a central reflector thirty six jets in the roof, while the pulpit and tts recess are lighted by gas from handsome bronze burners. This recess Is also band comely carpeted.- In the daytime the Bide windows give an abundance of light, while large Gothic window of blue stained glass sheds a soft light over the gallery. The in terior of the church was beautifully decorated yesterday, In honor of the dedication, with festoons of evergreen and flowers along the walls, varied by bright wreaths. The space around the pulpit was also neatly ornamented with flowers and cedar, and a beautiful wreath banging over the rear of the pulpit enclosed a photograph of the Rev. Mr. Merritt At the appointed sour the church was filled with sappy assemblage. The services were open sd by the Rev. E. J. Adams reading from the Scripture?, Ac., and a prayer was offered up by ;he Rev. W. H. Brown. The dedicatory ser non was next delivered by the Rev. Henry J Fox, D. D., from the text, "When I shall be ifted up I shall draw all men alter me," and vas listened to with much interest. The ser rices were concluded by a prayer from th lev. T. F. Ford, the pastor of the church, and he assemblage, after inspecting the beautiful >lace of worBhlp, disperded. Under the care >f its esteemed pastor, the church has prosper id well, and the congregation and Sunday school are steadily increasing. RATHER ROUGH.-Thomas Corcoran was Drought before tbe Mayor on Saturday morn lng charged with assaulting and bealing his setter-half, in a house in King street. One of 1er eyes was fairly closed, and her bead and ir m s bore the marks of blows which were shown to have been inflicted with a batchet inda sword old. and rusty enough to have )een the famous "Sabre de moo Pere." The ?se was thought to be a trifle serious, and ;he Mayor referred the matter to a trial jus tice. - _ Hotel Arrivals-Mareil 9 and IO. CHARLESTON HOTEL. Edward H. For a period of forty years serving SB an En? gine Company, since tbe war thia organization has been changed to the Hook and Ladder branch of the service, one no less important, yet much harder, as lt Involves the necessity of at tending every fire, no matter In what District lt may occur. But owing to the general depression, the mem? bers of the Company, while cheerfully and freely contribu? u g their time and labor, have had little else to give, and the Co ra piny, depending almost exclusively for support npon the pay received from the city, has found thia insufficient to meet the expen- es incident to the purchase of a new apparatus, and the maintaining or the same ta a proper state of efficiency. Under these circumstances, lt has been reluc? tantly determined to appeal to the public for aid and assistance, and the roi io wing committee will, with mat purpose, walt upon the citizens, with the confident hope that those whom they serve will not auirer them to ask In vain: COMMITTEE.
