In the Senate Nash Introduced a joint reso? lution to authorize the employment of the Hon. A. G. Magrath and Mr. J. L. Trade well to prosecute the persons who had swindled the State through sales of land, and to recover the money unlawfully paid for the purchase of land; the counsel to receive $5000 and Ave per cent, of the money recovered. The bill tor the protection and preservation of useful animals was passed, and the resolu? tion asking for copies of certain opinions of the attorney-general was adopted. Oh consideration of so much of the special report of the joint committee aa related to the land commission, Leslie propounded a variety of questions to Whittemore as to his complici? ty In the swindles of the land commission. Whittemore, by his answers, virtually exoner? ated Leslie from the charges made in the re? port against the commission. The expected battle in the Senate to-day over the report of the Joint special financial Investigating c im mit tee, and the latest special message ot the Goveraer, which bad been made the special order for this afternoon, re? solved itself into a simple skirmish-between Messrs. Leslie and Nash on the one side, and Mr. Whittemore on the other. At Ute conclu? sion of the morning's business, which had been hurried through by general consent t > allow of the expected discussion, Mr. Nash rose and moved to indefinitely postpone the consideration o? the special order. He said that the report of the committee had made a variety of charges, but without proposing any definite action-that he understood that arti? cles of Impeachment were pending tn the House, or were shortly to be introduced lu that body; that at present everything WEI vague and uncertain, and that therefore the Senate ought not to waste Hs time lu a discussion which would be unsatis? factory and futile. This motion to inde? finitely pospone was put and carried by a few affirmative, votes and without opposition, when Mr. Leslie, who had been otherwise en? gaged during the remarks of the senator from Virginia, Jumped Into the arena and "wanted to know, you know, about this thing." He seemed to Ignore, with that high and lotty contempt for everything parliamentary that characterizes the senator from Brooklyn, the fact that Nash's motion had been carried and the vote announced, and he proceeded with a lively and demonstrative argument upon the question. He allowed that there were some things the Republican party could do, but there were some others that they couldn't afford to do, and this was one ol them. They couldn't afford, after ali this slime and muss and mixture bad been stirred up, to stifle the whole matter by one vote as was then proposed. If Whittemore desired to back down from the consequences of hts - own report, as would seem from his voting for this resolution, let him do so, but not in that way. He had said to the Democratic gentlemen on the back seats that they would wake up some fine 1 morning and fine the whole investigating or- < rangement up in a balloon, and the morning ? had at last come.
