Thomas & Lanneau, No. 289 King streer. may be seen a glass jar, containing the dlflereat anie'es deposited thirty years ago kin the corner-stone of the cid Masonic Temple. The relics are in fine preservation, and will no doubt be of interest to the curious. A CONSPICIOCS SION.-Tte Southern and Atlantic Telegraph Company have erected a new and handsome sign opposite their office, at the corner of Eist Bay and Broad streets. It ls BO placed as to catch the eye of persons . walking in boto streets, and will, without doubt, prove to be a profitable investment. A NOMINATION Row.-The Columbia Union iearn8;fihat the meeting on Saturday at Orangeburg for nomination of Staue senator, to fill the place of Hon. Jo-eph A. Greene, de? ceased, was, from all accounts, anything but harmonious. There were, according to ac? counts received, three candidates for nomina? tion: Messrs. Jamison, Byas and Sturgln. Much squabling over preferences WAS In? dulged lo, and finally the whole tM .? broke up In a circumsciibed row, during which sev? eral persons went to grass. CLUBS AND STARS_Jerry Gay and Thomas Bryan, two colored men, arrested for fighting in Meeting street, near Hasel, were reported to^irlal Justice for examination. Annie Cohen, lodged for stealing dry goods from the house cf her employer. In Rodger's alley, was sent to the House of Correction for five days. Four victims to the treacherous fascinations of strong liquor, lound themselves in the Guardhouse, where they paid up their one dol? lar and left like men who bad done their duty. COTTON [FOR HOLLAND.-The British bark Brothers was cleared yesterday f"r Amster? dam with 1951 bales upland cotton, weight 875,187 pounds, value $161,555. The storage of this bark was performed in the most credit? able manner, and she carried an excess of full one hundred and fifty bales over what wa? ex? pected would be her capacity. The steve doresswork was done by Mr. Townsend, who ha?, we learn, given great satisfaction, and it ls with gratification that we note that the superior manner in which the cotten vessels are laden here is now meeting with general approbation. THE ORGAN of the Church of the Holy Com? munion has just been taken down and re? placed by Mr." Stein, who came for that pur? pose from the establishment of the builders, Messr?. Stein & Turner, of Westfield, Mas'. The organ is a very fine instrument, and has greatly improved in tone since lt was put up two years ago. Mr. Stein ls an experienced tuner of the organ, and lt would be advanta? geous to those who need his services to call upon him before he leaves Charleston. He can be seen for a day or two by referring to the rector o? the church of the Holy Commu? nion. _ A TERMAGANT ABS ?AD.-At a late hour on Sundayxlght Sylvia Davis, one of the deni? zens of E liott street, became in pressed with the idea that the evil spirit was about to take her, and gave vent to her horror In successive whoops and screams. The police came upi and Clubs and Stars, with an eye to business, smelling more alcohol than brimstone around, took the alarmist to J.e Guardhouse on the charge of being drunk and disorderly. The case was investigated yesterday morning, and the Mayor sentenced Sylvia to pay a fine of two dollars or go to the House of Correction lor ten day?. SPEAKING SPANISH.-Among the small hours ol yesterday morning a watchful policeman came across a dark object lying on South At? lantic wharf, which proved, on investigation, to be a man. He was with difficulty aroused from sleep, when Cubs and Stars began to in? terrogate him as to the why and the wherefore ol beiBg there. The man explained himself at length, but showed signs o;' fighting at the shaking of the head of Clubs and Stars, who failed to comprehend ihe language in which the prisoner was speaking. His action, how? ever, spoke more intelligently than his tongue, and Clubs and Stars having seen cases of the Mad before, carried the man to the Guard house, and with a bold guess entered his charge against a Spanish sailor for being drunk and unable to take care of himself. The prisoner, a few hours later, perceived the Jus? tice of the charge, and understanding things a little bett*^- paid up lils dollar and left. See First Page tor Loral .Matters. THE GREAT MASONIC CELEBRATION. Preparation* on Foot-The Gathering of the Lodges. The preparations for the great celebration among the mystic brotherhood, which have been spoken ol for some time past, presented themselves yesterday in a practical manner to the crowd in King and Wentworth streets. Early io the morning the workmen assumed a defensive position on King street, near the corner of Wentworth, and by dint of digging and nailing a large and convenient stand was erected in the middle of King Btreet, opposite Holmes's bookstore. A little further down the street tu? preparations were more impo.-ingi and before long a lofty and splendid arch spanned the street from the centre ol the new temple to the opposite sidewalk. Two smaller arches were Uien erected over the sidewalks adjoining each end of the larger arch. The carpenters, however, did not have the work entirely to themselves, as the arches and stands had to be decorated. Tnis task had been confided to the ladies, and the work could not have been in better hands. A charming committee assembled at an early hoar at Archer's Hall. Piles of evergreen, long ropes and reams of paper of all colors were awaiting their manipulations. The fairy fingers flew, and from the chaotic piles ol rub? bish sprang wreaths, roses innumerable, bouquets and interminable lengths ol' ever? green for garland?. Late In the evening, the committee were still at work, and what was accomplished the public will see as soon as the decorations are placed lu position. Another sign of the times is the assemblage of the fraternity in the city. From every county in the State the representatives have arrived, and at every step along our thorough? fares may be seen our country visitors doing business with one hand and with the other re? turning the welcome of their friends, whom they bail with delight at having escaped from the clutches of the legendary Yellow Jack. Every boarding-house ls full, and the lists of hotel arrivals show dropsical tendencies. Business is rushing, and the' merchants may now estimate the advantages they have gain? ed by having the Grand Bast permanently located in the city. The Grand Lodge will be opened at the Odd Fellows' Hall, at 12 M. to? day, all of the officers being in the elly. The inscription upon the corner-stone has been finished, and was visible yesterday in "White's Marble Yard," In Meeting, a few doors below Market street. The new temple is also an ob? ject of much interest to the visiting brethren, and the practical eye at once announces that "lt will be big enough to hold us this time."' THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT. We are informed that there are some grave errorc in the letter signed Retrenchment, printed in THE NEWS of yesterday. The facts, as explained to us, are these: There was a contract between the faculty of the Medical College and th? City Council, twenty-five years ago, to furnish medical and surgical assist? ance to the Marine and City Hospital. Under this contract the faculty took charge of the Poorhouse and Marine Hospital. As soon, however, as the Roper Hospital was organ? ized the faculty gave up their contract with the city, and the board of trustees elected a surgeon and a physician, whom they paid, for one-half the present work, double the salary proposed lo be paid the physicians specified in the bills now before the City Council. As regards the Marine Hospital, the faculty did contract with the United States Govern? ment to furnish medical attendance to this hospital, and complied with their contract until the breaking out of the late war. At the close of the war, the government sold the Marine Hospital, and contracted with the city lhat the physician of the City Hospital should attend the patients who should be sent to the hospital by the government or any foreign power. In the case of the Cliy Hospital, the contract lapsed by time, presumably with the consent of both parties, and In the latter the government ilsell has repudiated the agree? ment. The medical faculty have now every facility in the City Hcspital for clinical instruction, and do not desire anything more. The bill before Council is based upon motives of re? trenchment, and drawn up with the express view of saving the city all unnecessary ex? pense. It desires to provide a ready and speedy attendance upon the sick of the city who are unable to pay a physician. It is, however, not yet passed, and If "Retrench? ment" would explain to Its mover any way In which a'l the advantages it proposes could be secured at a less expense, we are certain he would be heard with attention, and see the bill modified or changed at its second reading. THE ROW IN ROTTENBORO'. This infammable locality became, on Sun? day evening, the scene of a disgraceful riot, in which several persons were beaten, but fortunately none were killed. Quite a num? ber of colored men bad assembled In front of Arnau's grocery, which also boasts of the at? traction of a cheap bar, and many being quar? relsome and nearly drunk, they found no bet? ter amusement than in making two boys fight. This not being conducted with any re? gard for lair play, was Interrupted by a sober colored man who was passing. The interfer? ence with their Sunday sport was enough for the drunken crowd, and the colored mun was soon knoiked down. The row once begun did not stop here, and soon the whole street was filled with colored men and women shout? ing, screaming, throwing brickbat?, and brand? ishing and strlkiog with their clubs. One of those knocked down now drew a pistol and dis? charged it In the crowd. The report only made the fighting more fierce, but it attracted the at? tention o? a policeman near by. He quickly ran to the scene of action and attempted to arrest two colored men who were beathing another with clubs. In a moment he was assailed, and received several serious blows from the bludgeons of the drunken ruffians. There were now over one hundred negroes fighting ?D.thestreet.and the disturbance seemed on the increase. A messenger had been sent at once to the Guardhouse by the neighbors; but be? fore the arrival of the police, the crowd began to break up, and the fighting by degrees ceased. On the arrival of a squad of police, the ground was clear, and none of the com? batant recently engaged could be found. One of them has been since captured, and the case referred t J a trial Justice. The others will be arrested soon. _ BUSINESS NOTICES. A. C. KAUFMAN wishes to purchase a variety of Railroad and City Securities. See adver? tisement.
