CAVBD IN.-On Saturday evening a danger eus hole made its appearance in America ^street, opposite Sooth, apparently without *f cause, and certainly . without foundation. The matter was referred to the city inspector, and received prompt attention. FIRE.-The alarm of fire, about ball-past three o'clock yesterday morning, was caused by the burning of a chimney on the premises of Mr. Marx leeman, in King street, near Cal? houn. The matter came up before the Mayor, and the owner, not having any excuse, nor being able to lay the blame on the chimney contractor, was fined ten dollars. Have your chimney* swept at once. Tax CITY Taxas.-A resolution will be offer? ed in Council meeting, this evening, extend the time for payment of city tax for 1871 to the 16th instant, vrUhout the penally, after which time executions will be sent to the eke riff without further delay, and no cooees alon will be made after that to any one. Should this resolution pass, those who have paid the penalty will bare that amount refunded. Pass HIM AROUND.-We are requested to caution the public against dealing with Robert E. Hubbe!!, who la travelling through the South representing himself tobe in the em ploy ment of finns in New York. Elam, German Opera. AMUSEMENTS. Mart? at tac Academy. The Form es-Habel mann Opera ' Company made their d?but at the Academy of Music, last night, lu Fiotow'd opera, Marla. The audience was large, for a tit st performance, and lull houses will, undoubtedly, greet the company now i hat .their solid merit ia known. Marta ls not an opera abort whose beauties amateurs rave, but its catcnlng melodies and sparkling choruses have established lt in the favor of ttr general public. It needs, how? ever, to make it thoroughly effective, a care? fully trained chorus and orchestra. ID these points, the performance of Marta was somewhat weak, but both orchestra and chorus are of fair material and sufficient strength, and a few hours of steady re? hearsal will give them much of the ac? cord and precision which hut night they, needed. We - do not hesitate to mention these short-comings, became the company of which we write is strong enough to bear criti? cism. The skill and natural resources of the leafing artistes are sufficient to cause any minor deficiencies to be well-nigh forgotten. The.first act of the opera passed off rather tamely, although Mr. Habelmann (Lionel) sang his romanza charmingly; but the second act I bordered upon au artistic triumph. The open? ing quartette, the Spinning Wheel quartette (one of the gems of the opera, and only poorly I applauded last night) and the delicious Gute Nacht were rendered with a grace and fervor j which deserve hearty praise. MMe Bosetti J was compelled to repeat "The Lsst Rose of Summer," but her method and voice were I shown to far more advantage lu the other numbers cf the scene, and in the finale to the third act. Her voice is oot particularly strong in the upper register, but she Bings with marked fluency and acts vivaciously. In the s cond act Mr. Habelmanu sang with I a pass'onate force, which moved the whole I audience, and his delivery of the tender! Af Appan tutC amor (Act 3) won for him the honors of the evening-tumultuous applause and an unanimous encore. Mlle. Dzluba has a pleasant voice, and ac quilted herself handsomely. We hope to see I ber ia a role which gives more opportunities for broad contralto einging than that of I Nancy. j Mr. Carl Formes, we need scarcely say, was full of life and vigor. His drinking jong was splendidly sung, but lt was not, strange to I say, cordially received. As an actor Mr. Formes ls still In his prime, and of the grand J old voice there ii enough left to serve balf-a- j dozen ordinary basses. The minor roles were satisfactorily Ailed, and the opera, as a whole, was as good a performance as Charleston is'likely to seel until the BooTE has doubled her wealtfi and I population.
