Other advices repeat, nevertheless that consulta? tions are continually laking place b?. tween the anti-Grant Republicans and some ol the Dem ocrats at Washington, with a view to coales? cing. -A very singular accident occurred cn the Georgia Railroad last Friday night. Simmons went down to the Island with the negro, and nothing was heard of them until last Thursday, when a Mr. Howard, who was proposing to rent the place, accompanied by negro boys rowed a boat down to the island and landed. They saw no or?3. moving about, and approaching Colonel Pelote's house, they knocked and called aloud. Receiving no answer, they entered the dwelling, and found the dead body of the old man, William Sim mons, lyin^ on the floor in a pool of blood. His skull ti ad been broken in, leaving the brain? insight, and one ol hu legs, which had been evidently thrust in the fireplace, was en? tirely burnt off, together with the shoes from both feet. Thursday, s "A eale of South Carolina bonds tock place in 11 the Exchange salesroom yesterday. The autioneer produced specimens of ihe bends for the inspecton of purchasers. They were knocked down in separate parcels at twenty-three and a ha'f | to twenty-four and one-eighth per cent. The next lot comprised $30.000 South Carolina seven per cent, new bond?, interest January and July. These bonds were caieiuliy scrutin? ized, and pronounced by several persons who were present to be very suspicious looking c?otumL?ts, from the fact that they purporter! to pay an interest ol' seven per cent. One well known gentleman stated that he had handled hundreds of thousands ofthemrbut he n.ver knew th.;t any seven per ceu'. bonus J were issued before. Tbe knowing ones all expressed themselves as believing them to be frauds, and therefore absta:ned from bidding on them. They were put up, however, and fifteen per cent was bid on them by an inte? rested party. They g ,1 no further, ard were therefore knocked down at that price.'' -Do our readers remember Edward Jones, (called by Panch at the time In-i-go Jones,) who, some thirty years ago. fell in love with Queen Victoria, and used to enter forcibly ihe royal residences-sometimes goicg clown the chimneys-that he might gaze upon the royal countenance ? Well, be is just dead in a St, Gib s hovel. To get rid ol the amorous in? truder he was shipped off to Australia, from which land he returned about five years since, with ihe tender passion still burning in his bosom, albeit ihe lady ha9 grown old and lat. anil is a grandmother. Being suddenly told by somebody, who probably did not know his feelings, that her Majesty was hopelessly ill, Edward Jones took to bis bed and speedily ex? pired. Some may consider this an unprece? dented case of monomania, but it is one which, although in a mitigated lorm, hss affected a considerable portion of Englishmen and Englishwomen in times past, although ihe demi-delficatioa or the monarch does really seem to be going a little out of fashion cow. The Courier Excited. We lear tbat our always venerable and usually placid neighbor, The Courier, is losiDg its temper. In re3pcijififc4??Tjur mild requeet for information as to the manner in which it proposes that tbe taxpayers shall accom? plish three thiDgs, which all good men and newspapers must concede are, in themselves, highly desirable, it goes off into an incohe? rent attack upon TEE NEWS, whose course it declares it has watched-we doubt not, with a jealous eye-from its very birth. "When asked to suggest a process by which the taxpaying minority of our people can give effect to the proposed repudiation of the alleged illegal issues of bonds, it indignantly exclaims that the puzzling question comes from the "carjp of the enemy." We inquir? ed by what legal legerdemain the courts could hope to tie the mischievous hands of the negro Legislature which bad created them ; and our neighbor replies with an em? phatic iteration of that excellent maxim, which is even older than The Courier itself, "Honesty is the Best Policy!" And when invoked to indicate the proofs by which the individual members of the Columbia Ring may be brought to speedy and condign pun? ishment, it responds with vague denuncia? tions of the fanaied vacillations and "intel "lec'.ual gymnastics" of THB NEWS. 'Jl this may be very amusing to tbe gene? ral public and a pleasant enough salve to Ibe mortified vanity of our ancient contempo? rary; but it would, perhaps, have been more worthy of a journal which, for over hal.'a century, has claimed to represent the solid commercial interest ot Charleston, either to have pointed out some means by which its three remedial propositions might be car? ried into effect, or to have candidly con? fessed the plain truth-that those proposi? tions are three empty threats which the rob? bers of the Legislature and the rascals of the Ring will regard about as much os does President Grant tbe dreary disquisitions of The Courier upon the moral law and the Limitations of the constitution. As to the political course of TUE NEWS, on which The Courier indnlgee in some Fecksniffian comment, the public will judge j, or i"*elf how far we have been honest, con- j i s'?'?? t and true. We cheerfully abide the issue. And it is, perhaps, just us well, for its own peace of mind, that our venerable 1i contemporary fancies that it enjoys a mon? opoly of tbe newspaper influence of this State. Nobody, we imagine, and certainly ?ot we, will be disposed to quarrel with it on account of so harmless a hallucination. i lit i io ti i. -D.i : J t _ t An election will take place to-day for a nember of the House of Representatives rem Charleston County, to fill the vacancy mused by the convenient resignation of J. j j r. Hardy. Only one candidate is regularly n the field, ex-Congressman C. C. Bowen, vho will walk over the course. & Very little interest ?3 taken in the election n )y tbe wbite3 or blacks. The resignation of 1 lardy and the nomination of Bowen are ooked upon as a cut-and-dried affair, the c ull meaning or which will not be developed ? inti! later in the session, and the vote, in ? joneequence, will be very light. Wo doubt J .hat a third of tbe entire vote of the county will be polled, but in the absence of opposi? tion it will suffice for the election of Bowen. The Life and Character of Gtnerul Lee. | ( We have received a copy of the address on :he life and character of General Robert E. Lee, delivered on the 12lh of October, before ihe society ol Confederate soldiers and sail-1 ? )rs in Maryland, by Lieutenant-Genera! (Vade Hampton. It is not ouly n. noble eulo? gy or the great Christian warrior, but also a I D rateable contribution to the history of the | a war between the States. General Hampton ihows, by the testimory of facts and ligures, he dauntless heroism of the Confederate irmie8, and the immense results which they iccomplished with a force which was a hand ?l when compared willi the hosts of their ipponents. This address, and that which General Early delivered before the State survivors' Association, will go far to con? vince the public that justice bas never been I ( lone the gallantry and steadfastness of the | * South, and they will, besides, be hailed with ?ordial welcome by the Southern people. General Hampton bad no easy task. That ie succeeded 30 well is a compliment to hi3 :ultu."e, his eloquence, hi3 patriotism and lis truth. The pamphlet is issued from the press of lohn Murphy & Co., of Baltimore, and is a .hoice specimen of typographical skill. EX-SENATOR CAIN declines to be a candi late for the State Legislature upon the rround that he will not aid the Ring in any )lan8 for plundering the people of ibo State. iVhen the whole people demand Parson iain's services, in tbe interest of honest egislation, it will be time enough, he thinks, or an honest Radical to aspiro once more to mblic office. "Every Little Helps. The Columbia Union notes a clerical irror of nineteeu thousand dollar3 in the isbibit of the State debt, just published, he correction of which reduces the total 0 less than twelve millions. "Small favors 'thankfully received." Messieurs of tho iing. The Blut Ridge Railroad. The new board of directors of this road have taken an excellent step in electing Colonel J. P.
