Henry Matthews, colored, arrested for disor? derly oondnct at the corner of St. Pm Hp and cal? houn streets, was sentenced to pay a floe or two dollars, or spend ten days in the Hoose of Cor? rection. FOUND DEAD.-Early yesterday morning Mijj Louisa Cha po nie, a colored woman, who was walking about on the diy previous, appa? rently lo good health, was round dead in her bed, at her tl-ce or residence, No. 37 George street. Her demise was effected in the qnietest manner, without any alarm being given, or any or the other occupants of the hoose being aware of what was going on. The deceased was a native of Port aa Prince, nay ti, and was folly eighty two years or age, having resided here over fifty-five years. An inquest was held over her body, and the Jory round that abe had come to her death from old sge. A LAWLESS APPROPRIATION.-Yesterday af? ternoon, ao old colored woman named Martha Maxwell, who had gathered a small bag or waste cotton darlag the day, stopped on Atlantic wharf to apeUt with a friend, and while doing this pot down her bag. Charles Jones, a negro boy, .'onad the cotton t hus, and, grabbing lt, he ran OL* and sold it. for the som or treaty-five cents. Thc poor woman arrived at the store arter the bargain had beea concluded, sad the purchaser refused to let her have the cotton. She th u de. maoded the money of Jones, who also rerased to give lt tn her, nntn a policeman was called, when Jones tore ap the fractional currency and Hang lt at the woman. TEMPT TO BUEN A DWSLLINO-THE ALARM AND EXTINCTION OF THE FIRS.- About two o'clock yesterday morning, an attempt was made to boro the i welling of a colore d mao oamed Joseph Bright, OD the west side or Anson street, two doors above the Catholic Ch ur. h. The dwelling ls a wooden two a tory house, situated far back in the lot, aod occupied by Bright and his large family, among whom are several small children. They had retired for the night and were sound asleep, when, between two and three o'clock lo the morning, Bright was awakened by the cries of his children, whom he found almost stifled by the thick smolfe which rose up through the cracks of the floor. At once divining the cause, he gave the alarm of fire, aod rusfced^rom the house. In his yard nothing could be seen, bot the back or his house stood exactly on the dividing Doe or the two lots, the adjoining premises being owned and occupied by Nicholas Yockeb. A r-arty or men, attracted by the cry or fire, leaped the front gate of Yockeh'B premises, and running to the back of Brig lu's house, found a fire kindled under the flooring, and buming fiercely. A well was, fortunately, at baud, and repeated buckets mi water soon extinguished the dan g?rons invader. A large pile or kiod Hog wood was found to have been placed nader the joists or the hoose, near the comer, aod set on ore. The wood was alto covered with coal tar, and poola or this inflammable substance were .found beneath "he kindling wood. No trace ot the Incendiarles .vere found, except a board knocked from the lenee, between the church premises and those or vockeh's, making a hole large enough for a small man to get through. The sight of genuine, tangible, palpable ice la the gutters and the little pools that the rain of Tuesday had left in the city streets, bore testi? mony yesterday morning to the final and deci? sive rom of the pestilential pywers or the air, by honest Jack Frost, with his icy breath and frosty fingers. The good news that a genuine freeze had really come, was passed around with won derfol rapidity. Everybody knew it as soon as they had been ont of bed for naran hour, and could tell you all about lt. Conversations like the following were frequent : "Do you know we hadlee last night? I saw some this morning." "Oh, that's too thin." "Not at all. It was ful'y a sixteenth or an inch thick." "Where was lt ?" "Why, the fishermen on South Bay found ice in their boats when they went to clean them out." "Yes, and I saw some at the corner of East Bay and Market streets and broke lt with my cane.'' "There wa* plenty of Ice formed at Potter's Field last night" "Oh, yes. There's no doubt about the Ice. Why should there be ? The thermometer wen t as low as 31 deg., and that ls one degree belt freezing pjlnt." "I know there was plenty of white frost." "Oh, pshaw ! We've had that for a week nearly, lhere was a killing black frost last night." The city looked brighter and busier yester day under the stimulus of the cheering news than lt had ror weeks. Men and horses snailed np the frosty morning air, blew great wreaths of mist from under their blue Loses, and wonderfully en Joyed the new ien s at ion. A dispatch received yesterday, about eleven o'clock, by Chief Nathans, brings the news that the Washington Fire Company, or w urning ton, DeL, left Weldon at thirty-five minutes past ten A. M., "ail right," en route lor this city. ON THE TRAMP.-Oa the night of Wednes? day, the 15th Instant, the premises of Mr. P. Metzler, $o. 129 King street, were Invaded by depredatore, who carried on? two fine Brahma f J wis and a gray hen. The robbery was effected in an artistic manner, and no alarm was given. This ls the first raid of the poultry thieves which has been chronicled for some IOK and shows that the time ls come when drlstmas poultry are La danger la more ways than one. THE MrssiNO MAN.-The whereabouts of Mr. J. A. Alpers still remains a profound mystery, notwithstanding the endeavors or his friends to ascertain the circumstances attending tis disap? pearance. Their fruitless search has led many to believe that the unfortunate gentleman, who was always quiet and steady, has been kidnapped by some parties and taken to sea. They are con? vinced that he ts not on the land, and arrive at the conclus Kn that he is kidnapped after a careful examination or all the facts attending his habits aod bis Intentions when last seen.
