SCHOOL STATISTICS.-Superintendent Jillson reports to the United States commies! ner of education the statistics of 402 school districts, with 1089 schools, 67,098 scholars, and 1855 teachers, of which latter 1150 are males, and 705 are females. Since June sotb, 1870, more than double the number of scholars appear upon the Itu: i of attendance. COTTON PICKING.-Wm. Kennedy, a small colored boy, was discovered among the cotton bales on Union Wharf about midday on Monday with a bag containing court which .he was pulling and picking from the bales. G. Worthington, Esq., appearing for the government, and Messrs. Carroll and Janney for the prisoner. He was remanded to jail for trial at the coming term of the United sutes Court. One of the witnesses for the United States swore posi? tively Um herecoghlz- d Hughes as one of the disguised parties who aided in taking from the jail the Union prisoners, at the time of the massa? cre there last winter, the prisoner being jailor at the time, and coming tn with the disguised men with a handkerchief tied over hla vote and month. The near approach of the time which was to place an administration represent? ing all lnterests,and in every respect worthy of onr city, in the municipal high places, filled every citi? zen with a subdued Joy. In the Guardhouse the sign of the coming change was very perceptible. On the preceding night a fracas had occurred among the colored policemen living lu the building at the back of the yard, the particulars or which could not be learned, lt was owing to the depriving some of them of their pistol*, which they reaented as an expression of distrust. Ko one was burt. The Winchester rides, which have so long been kept in the long racks around the wall or the drill hall in the second Btory of the Guardhouse, were taken down yesterday morning. These arms had been furnished by Governor Scott on the plea that the interests cf law and order required that the police Bbould be ef festively armed. The wide-awakes were, however, llsappolnted, as no fracas had occurred, and lt was discovered that the inspiring sounds had pro? ceeded from the Guardhouse yard, where a peace? ful looking Clubs and Stars waa peppering a pile of 8awdust preparatory to cleaning bis revolver. In the evening a meeting of Council was ex? pected, but somehow lt did not come off. The old place was br.lllantly lit up as usual, but the Mayor did not come down. By degree* the mem? bers of the board began to drop In until six were present. They sat a short while, and then took their departure with a melancholy resignation. The Blx aldermen were Robert Howard, W. R. H. Hampton, WI Ham McKinlay, T. R. Small, and L. F. and E. P. Wau. They sto.d by their offices to the last. This was the last move, a cd nothing of interest transpired later. THREATENING.-At a late hour on Monday night as Roundsman Lyons, cf the police force, was patrolling King street, near Columbus, he came opon a colored man who seemed bent on raising a disturbance. The officer ordered him to desist, when he t urne l and told the officer if be tried to arrest him he would cut him ta mince? meat. The pol ce m an did his duty, and took the man to the Guardhouse. He was examined yesterday morning and discharged .' ACCIDENT ON THE FALCON.-Yesterday after? noon, about 4 o'clock, John Peters, a sailor, while engaged in washing the paint on the pilot house of the steamship Falcon, lying at Union wharf, lost his balance and fell to the bottom of the hold, a distance of about twenty feet. His left thigh was crushed and othef les9 sei ions Injuries In? flicted. The sufferer was taken up and Bent at once to the City Hospital, where his injuries were promptly attended to by Dr. J. S. Buist, the surgeon of the lustitntlon. Atlast accounts he was doing well. CLUBS AND STARS.-Boston Parker and Jack Reid, the two youths of color arrested for fight? ing on Market wharf, were sentenced each to pay a fine of five dollars or spend five days in the House of Correction. Charles Green and Samuel Young, lodged for raising a disturbance In Line street near Rutledge avenue, were discharged after an examination. John Walker, colored, arrested fer having a public dancing party, enlivened by a band of music anda rafi!;, at his house lu King street, near Line, deposited ten dollars for his appear? ance before the Mayor yesterday morning, which was declared forrelted.
