ALMOST A FIRE.-There was a slight commo? tion in Mazyck street about ll o'clock Sunday night, occasioned by the burning of a chimney In the neighborhood. The fire soon burned out, and subsided without any alarm being rung. The matter has been reported at the Guardhouse, and will be investigated '.bis morning. THE SOUTHERN AND ATLANTIC TELEGRAPH COMPANT.-This company (to which we are. Indebted for the earliest telegrams describing the Chicago ^fire, yesterday morning,) has completed its line to Savannah, for which point, as well as all points in the North and West, it ls now receiving messages. The rate to Bavannah Is thirty-five cents for ten words. Rio COFFEE.-There arrived here yesterday, direct from Rio Janeiro, a cargo ol twenty-six hundred bags ol selected coffee, ex brig Clara. In the advancing character of this article, and ^^ba light stock in the markets ol this country, ^rlcpresent cargo, which will soon be offered, will give dealers an excellent opportunity to replenish their supplies. The shipment ls consign"d to Mr. C. N. Hubert. MURDER AT OAKLET.-Saturday night, W. B. Fidea, the agent of the Northeastern Railroad at Oakley, about twenty-seven miles from the city, was murdered, and bis dead body found in the depot oext morning. The keys of the depot and about seven hundred dollars were stolen from the dead man, Mid lt is supposed that robbery was the motive of 'he deed. Mr. F's. family were absent at the tim?.. Several parties are suspected, and every effort will be made to secure th* murderer. THE COW-DRIVER.-Paul Grant alias Jacob Lad8on, who was arrested on Saturday for driving somebody's cow up Meeting street and offering it lor sale to a butcher for twenty-five dollars, was brought before Trial Justice Levy lor examination. Not being able to explain the matter to the satisfaction or the Justice, the prisoner was committed to jail, In default ol three hundred dollars bal), to await his trial at the November term of the Court ol General Sessions. CLUBS AND STARS.-Peter Wilson, reported for carelessly driving his cart against and car? rying away an awning post on East Bay, com. promised the matter by offering to repair the damage. James Brown and Hester Hart, lodged for disorderly conduct In King street, were sen? tenced each to pay a fine of five dollars or go to the House of Correction for ten days. She and he went. Of six persons arrested for being drunk or raising a disturbance on the street, two were discharged and the others sentenced to pay a fine of five dollars or spend ten days in the House of Correction. A milch cow, lound quietly grazing in Aiken's Park, waa ordered to be delivered to the owner on payment of a fine of one dollar and expenses. Frank Smith, white, arrested for lying drunk In Meet.UR street, was sent to the House of J Correction for twenty daye. A SINGULAR RACE ON EAST BAT.-Consid? erable excitement prevailed upon East Bay yesterday morning over an Impromptu race between the city hands, who were engaged in cleaning up that street. The starting point was ^at the corner of Broad street, and the goal the Market. Six laborers on eac h side, one set white and the other colored, strove lo see which would reach Market street first, cleaning and scraping tho gutter and street as fax as the middle. The contest was a close one, and the competitors achieved wonders in their handling of the spade. Bets were made as an ugly muddy place delayed one side and the other forged ahead; but the general preva? lence of the mud afforded both plenty ol exer? cise. The leaders both threw up the broom at pretty nearly the same time, the whites, if anything ahead; but the victory ls yet under discussion and will be decided by competent Judges. The whole Job was finished by twelve o'clock, which, under the ordinary routine ol the etreet Inspector's office, would have re? quired at least a day and a half. ADVENTURES OF A MULE-A NAUGHTY JACK. Yesterday morning Jack Barber, a colored man of dignified appearance, might have been seen wending his way down Meeting street mounted upon a diminutive specimen of the mule kind. The elongated ears of the animal siping backward and forward, with his dig? nified galt, and the dangling legs o' the rider with als feet almost touching the pavement, formed a picture at once uniqr.e and attract? ive. The "solitary horseman'' was grieving over his lot, for, obedient to the mandates ot 'he law, he was bringing down his tried and faithful ass to Trial Justice John G. Mackey's court, who bad adjudged the mule to another clainpnt In a case of trover but late, ly tried. With the air ol a martyr, and a cunning twinkle In his eye, Jack bade fare? well to his mule and left the court in a hurry. The donkey, however, had been seen and mark? ed by other parties, and before he was out of | sight of the trial Justice's court, Jack was ar? rested and brought belore Trial Justice Ma? grath charged with cheating and swindling From the affidavit in the case and the evidence given, it appears that Jack had borrowed the donkey from a county official, and after usiDg it for some time Instead of returning it, he had sold lt to a man named H. Gadsden lor twenty-five dollars. The money was more use? ful to Jack than the mule-it travelled faster and was soon gone. In the meantime the owner ot the donkey demanded his animal, and Jack not being In a situation to return it, a suit in trover was the consequence. Jack stood the suit, and Justice Mackey having de? cided against him, he was ordered to produce the mule. Packing his brain for a way to es? cape from his dilemma, he at length struck upon a brilliant scheme, and, going to his friend Gadsden, he borrowed the mule Just to take a ride down town. He would then de? liver the mule Into court, and let Gadsden and the others fight it out among themselves. His Me down town and the delivery ol the mule Into court were accompli h.ed; but the subse? quent arre8twas "a scene not in the bills," and lor which he was who'ly unprepared. Not being able to give bail, he was committed to jail to amit his examination. THE HEALTH OF THE CITT. The favorable reports from the board of health, which began to be Issued in the latter part of last week, still continue, and for the twenty-four hours ending at noon yesterday but one certificate ol death from yellow lever was received. The approach of cool weather has evidently checked the advance of the fever, and with an early lrost we may soon chronicle the total disappearance of thia un? welcome visitor. HANDSOME DONATION.-At the last meet iog of the German Rifle Club, a donation of one hundred dollars was voted to the Howard Association, in consideration of the eminent ie.-vi ces rendered by that association to the destitute sick, and particularly to the Ger? mans. The money was promptly paid over by the treasurer of the c!ub. DEATH OF A YOUNG CUARLESTONIAX.-The funeral services of Mr. G. Norton Leitch were performed yesterday afternoon at the Citadel Square Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Winkler. The church was well filled, the various socie? ties of which the deceased was a member be? ing well represented. Mr. Leitch, though a young man, had served with merit throgh the late war. A DEFAULTING TAILOR.-A. B. Waiker, a colored tailor, wt s brought before Trial Jus? tice John G. Mackey yesterday morning, and sentenced to pay a fine of ten dollars and costs or go to jail for thirty days. The prisoner, who was committed indelault of payment ot his fine, had received about Bix months ago a lot of cloth from a customer to be made Into a suit. As lime went, the customer asked re? peatedly for his Dew suit, but being always put off, at length brought the tailor before the trial justice. Upon his promising to get the suit and deliver it, the prisoner was allowed to go home, when he disappeared. He was caught yesterday by the constable, and having been found gullly of a breach of trust, was punished as stated. Row is THE WIGWAM_David Dickson was arrested and taken to the upper Guardhouse tor being drunk and disorderly at the corner of Coming and Vanderhorst streets. During hiB incarceration he woke the echoes of the quiet Guardhouse with his shouting, and vent? ed his rage on the furniture ol his cell, to the utter demolition of the water-bucket. Having been brought before the Mayor yesterday morning, be was sentenced to pay a fine of | five dollars and repair the damages. A FATAL FRACAS BETWEEN GIRLS.-An in? quest was held yesterday morning at No. 16 Trarii street, over the body of Elizabeth Fer? guson, a colored girl about twelve years of age, who died at ^alf-past eight o'clock. On Thursday, the 28th of September, the deceased had gone lato the street, and in front of ber residence met Mary Heyward, another colored girl, about ten years of age. The two began to quarr?! .'or soma trivial word?, and a fight ensuing, the deceased threw Mary on the ground and pommelled her badly. Attracted by the noise the mother of Mary came out, and the deceased seeing her, jumped up from her prostrate foe aud beat a retreat. While she was doing this her antagonist, Mary, seized an old piece ol tin and threw it at her. The mis Bile, which was an old tm pan bent double, had a jagged point, and this struck the deceased in the lelt temple and remained fixed in the bone. The girl was taken in and the services of a physician procured. The wound was a severe one, the Un requiring several tugs before lt could be drawn from the bone. The deceased was apparently doing well for some days, but was finally taken with the lockjaw and died aa stated. The jury found that the deceased came to her death by lockjaw, superinduced by the wound in her temple; and further add? ed that Mary Hey ward hud caused the wound by misfortune and contrary to her will.
