CuRBBKX LITERATURE.-From Russell's fcookstore we have the London Quarterly Review and the Westminster Review for April, as well as Blackwood for May. Also thc Eclectic Magazine forJune. CHILD FOUND.-Tuesday night, about ll o'clock, a little colored girl, about four or five years old, was found astray la Meeting street; and bj reason ot fright or Ignorance was unable to teii the names or residence of her parents. She was taken to the Guardhouse by the Sudor, and was ordered by the Mayor to be kept until called for.. Dr -? THE MODERN JACK SHEPPARD.-Frank Wins? low, the noted burglar who was arrested In this city some time back, and released for want of eviieace against him, went Immediately to Sa? vannah, where ha was arrested soon after on the charge of stealing a wat ;h. His examination was abeu: to lead to the sime result as in this city, wli-. n Winslow gave his jailor the slip by cleverly foo.-ag the sentinel and walking out of prison taro igh the gate. He has not yet been rearrested. Tut: CAROLINA DRAMATIC CLUS.-The psr fornnnce last evening, at the old hall of the Freuudschaftsbund, was well attended, and the .amateurs acquitted themselves ia a manner Which afforded much entertainment to their audience. The various characters were w,ell sup? ported, and the two plays selected for the occa? sion were rendered in a way which showed mach ?ind; and a high -degree of proficiency on the par: of the amateur performers. WATCHES WERE MADE TO Go.-Jim Brown, a c< lored youth cf sixteen summers, was arrest? ed kt 8 o'clock iast evening, charged with steal lug a stlv. r watch and chain from C. J. Peterson, a mate of the Swedish bark lying at the foot of Cailiouu street. The mate missed bis watch, which ue had left hanging In the cabin, and re? ported the matter to Detectives Lovett and Truall, wl:o Immediately suspected Jim, an old offender, employed about the bark on that day. The watch has not been recovered, but Jim ts held for exami? nation._ CONTENTENT FRIENDSHIP.-Eve Nelson, a colored girl, WPS arrested, yesterday morning, U? Officers Jo.-.r.scn and Truall, charged with stealing a pair of shoes from Julia Jones. Eve bad paid a visit to her friend Juill, and, after a pleasant evening, slipped a pair of gaiters into her pocket as she was leaving. Julia missed cae articles, and promptly had her friend arrested. A search In the apartment of tie latter brought to light not only the gaiters, but a long list of dry goods, which are said to have b?en stolen from oilier parties m a similar manner. We are afraid there ls a good deal of the "old Adam" in Eve. She ls held for .'mlnatlon. UNIFORM AT A DISCOUNT.-Godfrey Bryant aud Daniel Green, two colored boys, about eight or nine years of age, were arrested on Tuesday af: moon while offering for sale, at greatly re? duced prices, au uniform coat aud hat of the Lin? coln Light Infantry. They were lodged In the Guardhouse, and having been brought before the Mayor, yesterday morning, were sentenced each to a term of thirty days In jail as vagrants. The co.it and hat were returned to the owner, who wa3 rejoiced once more to behold his favorite emblems or the pomp and circumstance of glori? ous war, and ls now equipped for the next parade o' '.lie company. H:D IN THE CLOSET.-On Tuesday evening, about 6 o'clock,Mr. Weatherhorn, who resldtsat Ko. 569 King street, found a colored youth con? cealed In a closet lu a room on fie second story of the house. The intruder had evidently Jnst established himself in' his co3y quarters for the purpose or ransacking the house, when the in? mates might be all asleep. He was dragged forth and turned over to a policeman, and duly made his appearance before the Mayor yesterday m om? its After a short hearing, he was held for funner examination. This ls a favorite and lazy method among thieves, which dispenses with the noise attending the breaking Into a house, and accounts for many robberies where the mode or Ingress seemed to be a matter of profound mys? tery. _ GENERAL TICKET . AGENCIES.-Among the many conveniences offered by the Charleston Ho? tel and Mills House, there is none which conduces more to the comfort of travelling than the geno ral ticket agency, a branch or which ls establish? ed a: each hotel. By means of this agency the traveller ls enabled, without leav.ng the hotel, to purchase a ticket for any railroad or steamship by which he may wish to leave, as also through tickets to almost auy point on the American con? tinent. Cp wards of two hundred different tickets to various points in the United States, North, South, East or West, are to be had there. All In? formation with regard to the respective routes ls cheerfully furnished by the courteous agent, Mr. A. Butterfield; and In this manner lady travellers may purchase their tickets at the reception room, and avoid all the tum.-and confusion attendant upon this act at the depot. SHOOTING IN THE STREET.-About 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon there was considerable ex - cttement in Meeting street, above Brookbanks's Ice cream establishment, commencing with a somewhat lively dialogue between two men, one cf whom considered himself aggrieved by the other. The words, as is often the case, were Tol lcwed by blows, a knife being freely brandished hy the assailant. The other party managed tc disengage himself, and ran down the street, ^!:en the wife of the pursuer handed him a pistol, evidently brought there for the purpose, and he then and there, In the public highway, witt] malice prepense, (but not in cold blood, for he was highly excited and livid with rage,) did shoot, and attempt to kill the man who was run nmg down the street before him. No damage doue. The shootlst was arrested, and the mattel will undergo examination before his Honor this morning. CLUDS AND STARS.-Daphne Alexander, ai cid offender, arrested for being drunk and disor? derly In the street, was sent to the House of Cor rectlon for thirty days. There will be a grand gathering both or the brr.ve and the fair, and the arrange? ments having all been completed in a most ad - mirable manner, we doubt not that the occasion will be pleasant to all the participa a ts. and high ?y credit a ale to the .-Etnas. DISTURBANCE IN CHURCH STREET.-Yester? day, during tae trial of a-case before Justice Caulfield, a colored man named William Robert? son made some disturbance, which, being con? tinued. Mr. Ca ulfleld ordered him to be commit? ted to jail for Tour hour*. The ordering was easy enough, but the prisoner refused to be commit? ted, and as four constables seized him, a despe? rate struggle ensued tu the street. In addition to the constables, the crowd assisted, but'Robertson was no chicken, and the rushing and pushing for ! several minutes threatened a serious row. The prisoner at length succumbed, but resisted at intervals on tae route to the jail. Near the Work? house he knocked over one of his constables lu a final effort, but at length was safely Udged. He was placed tri the tower, where the balmy breezes will, no doub:, mollify his temper." The prisoner thought he was Imposed upon, and hence his stubborn res stance.
