SODDEN DEATH.-Mr. Porter B. Burnham,
well-known In Greenville, was found dead near j
i the gate or his mother's residence, In that place,
. on Sunday morning last, about 5 o'clock. The
jury of Inquest empanelled bx the oaae, rendered
a verdict of death from congestion or the brain.

Caucus MEETINGS_In anticipation of the
coming municipal election, a batch of du<ky
politicians are airea- y on the qui vive, and
several caucus meetings have been held at the
Workhouse lately. These, lt ls understood, are
presided over by the colored keeper, Wm. Dart,
and are held on the principle of '-no white men
need apply." Thia corpa count certainly, and
with some reason, on the support of the prisoners
w'ao pass through the House of Correction.
ST. MARK'S FAIR, -The handsome manner in
which thlB fair haa been got up and conducted ls
bringing Its own reward, and the beautiful hall
was filled last evening with a large assemblage of j
visitors. The tables were well patronized, and
the raffling went on with more than usnal spirit.
Once more the Chicara Cornet ind String Band
had offered their services and regaled the numer?
ous visitors with a succession of sparkling and
popular airs. The ra ir was kept open until a late
hour.
CLUBS AND STARS.-Sarah Reed and Priscilla
Davis, two colored nymphs or th* pavement, and
J. J. Johnson, a-Tart youth, arrested fur disturb?
ing the neighborhood by cursing and abusing one
another, at the corner of Queen and state streets,
on Thursday night, were sentenced each to pay a
^Jne or $5, or go to Jail for ten days.
Julius Hamilton, a .?mall boy. Who persisted In
sleeping several nights at Mr. Perkins's premises,
la Princess street, and could not be got rid ot,
was arrested and -eat by the Mayor to the House
of Correction for twenty days, under-the vagrant
law.

State of Kew Torie, Judge "Platt, within the past
fifty years, has ailed many honorable positions.
As a lawyer, he was employed by the General Gov?
ernment in settling the complicated claims of rae
United States on the Pacific coast. He served
with distinction as the attorney-general of the
State of Michigan, and in all the relations of life
appears to have won that credit which attaches
to high integrity in the discharge of official duty.
Judge Platt was descended rrom the oldest fami?
lies of New York. His grandfather waa a signer
of the Declaration of Independence. His father
was one sf the supreme judges of the State, a
compeer and friend of Dewitt Clinton, and, as ac?
knowledged by Governor Clinton In one of his '
public documents, the originator of the great Erie
Canal. His connections on both sides have left
their hand-mart: on the history of their State, and
Judge Platt himself exhibited in hrs career, both
here and elsewhere, those strong elements of char?
acter which have Identified the name with many
of the pubUc events of the past He was a Chris?
tian, and a gentleman ia ' every sense of
the word. Honest in his convictions, be
sought to do right. Justice was the watch-,
word- of his life. Tender hearted, with lm-?
pulses as warm as those of youth, and yet
fearless in the performance of what he conceived
to be his duty; courteous alike to friend and foe;
exhibiting at times the highest type of moral
courage, and ta all the relationships cf life con?
scientiously obeying, as he understood them, toe
precepts of ?aw, society and na tore.
Jndge Platt came to South Carolina after the
war, and, m 1838, was elected by the General As?
sembly to the position which he held at the time

who was killed by the locomotive of the outward
bound train on the Northeastern Railroad, just

was the captain of a raft on Its way down the

to walt for the tide he had anchored at Happokl t's
Farm. From this place he walked to the city to
aet a tresh supply of provisions, aad was on hts

^PAINFUL ACCIDENT.-Another accident of an
almost fatal character was added yesterday even?
ing, between eight and nine o'clock, to .the
numerous ones already caused by explosions of
keroseneoll. A colored nurse, with a white child
la her arma, was walking across the apartment,
jua: over Mr. F. L. O'Neill's grocery store on King
street, with a lighted kerosene lemp in her hani.
The wick, it seems, did not flt the lamp tightly,
and there being no lever to raise lt or keep lt tn
its place, the jarring made it rall through into the
lamp. A terrino explosion fallowed, and in a
moment the woman was in flames. She fortu?
nately threw down the child as the lamp explod?
ed, and lt escaped without Injury from the flames.
The cries or the woman quickly brought assis?
tance, aud in a short time the names were
extinguished. Uer clothing was burned from her
arm and side, and ber flesh was badly burned
from her neck down, the akin hanging on her
arm. Dr. Raoul waa quickly summoned, and
everything done to relieve her sufferings. Her
burna, lt ia thought, will not prov? ratal, although
or a very serious nature.

woman out or $5. It sesm3 that Jacob, who is

Walker, on the street, and displaying a large roll
or greenbacks, hinted that there were plenty
mere where that came from. A confidential talk
followed, in which Jacob dlaetoeed to his credu?
lous hearer that he had " the' dead thing on the
Tiger," and that ir Walker would furnlah a V he,
Jacob, would go and bust up Ben. Riols, and
divide the proceeds. The latter Jumped at *he
idea, but had nr ruuds. Upon reflection, how?
ever, he thought he could squeeze ir out or his
sister-in-law. The two went to her house, and
she having produced the required sum In small
blas, Bryant grabbed the same, and leaving
Walker behind, lest Blois should " smell a mice,"
he walked off with the money, and waa heard of
no more by hts dupe. The alater-ln-law, knowing
nothing about thu Tiger business, and, upon her
complaint. Bryant was arreated. He waa found
guilty, and sent to the House of Correction for j
thirty Jays. A charge of the like nature as the
above awaits htm at the termination of Mat/re?
seat term.

THE CATHOLIC FAIR-FITTH EVENING.-The
n umber of visltore at the fair last evening was as
large aa cn any ol the preceding evenings, and a ?
dense mase or humau beings swayed slowly
around the hall during the time the rair was kept
open. To cros9 the room waa a ta'k attended with
difficulty, and only to be accomplished by pati?
ence, perseverance, and an expenditure or small
change. Diminutive beings were constantly tn
the wij, and every advantage was taken or a
pause to invite the visitor to inspect a raffle list.
The numberer these deluding papera which were
being carried around exceeded all calculation,
and a young lady without one waa a curiosity.
Several Impromptu lotteries of trifling articles
were got up on the spur or the moment and prov?
ed themselves handsome speculations. Among
the vest crowd that Ulled the hall many new and
welcome faces were to lie seen, and the evening
was without doubt one of the moet profitable of
tho fair. On Saturday evening there la no excuse
for staying away, and lt is. expected that all who
