The chasseurs who held him put him upon a bench, and submitted the question to the csowd, "Will you allow the prisoner to blow out his brains with his own revolver ?" "No !" was the response, follow? ed by cries ol, "To the water with him !" The poor fellow's arms and legs were tied, and he was hurled from the quay and pelted with stones; the current bore bim away, ^and the crews of the rlver'steamers were prevented by the mob from rescuing him, till the body drifted under the piling and was seen no more, Healthy Signs. Parson Gain, in the last number of the Missionary Record, demands* a change in every department of the State government. He declares-with emphasis that "the Sirocco "cometh, surcharged with death." In other words, he justly deduces from the inexor? able logic of facts that Republicanism in South Carolina, in its present form, is a fraud and a failure. He rays down the broad propositions that there are no leaders of the Republican party in the State; that they have been sold out to the corrupt Rings who ruled the Legislature; and that unless some man shall rise above the petty prejudices ol a mere faction, there can be no such thing as reform. Even the Governor, the Parson says, seems to have lost confidence in his white confreres, orhe would have invited them to participate in the receat consulta tiorrat Columbia; while the colored people, by following the advice of would-be friends, have become mere tools in the hands of de? signing partisans. The sum and substance of his conclusions are that when the Chief Executive cannot lind enough hone3t men in his own party with whom to affiliate and ad vise, there is no vitality left in the organisa? tion to commend it to the rank and file of the people. The Parson concludes by say ingthat "intelligence will rule the world "Cureeand brand it as you may, there is a "power in intellect" and integrity which "nothing can overcome. And the only "question is whether the ignorant and cor "rupt shall still have preferment, and the "people shall quietly submit to bo ruled by "stupidity." Utterances like these, coming from a lead j er of the colored race in South Carolina, con I sidered in connection with the developments in other parts of the State, indicate the pre v alence-among the blacks of a restlessness, a dissatisfaction, and a determination hence? forth to choose as their representatives in ail public offices honest and capable men, even though they may be compelled to-seek them outside of the Ihnes of the Republican * ?*-?^~? . i Bon Voyage ! Grant seems to be singularly fond of the South Carolina carpet-baggers. Bowen was notoriously one of his special pets, - and it is said that in case of his conviction for bigamy, a pardon from the White House is confidently looked for. Meantime, while .Bowen ls under a cloud, another of our ex Honorables is pror'sed a pretty plum. The Washington correspondent of the Baltimore Sun tells us : "It seems to be ge nert.:.'/ ex? pected among Administration Republicans "here that the H?H. S. L. The J j late constituents of the Honorable Solomon are ready to wish bim a safe voyage, provided he stands, not upon the order of his going, but goes at once. And should. Brazil gro w so enamored of the rising hero, jurist and statesman, all rolled into one, as to adopt him for her own*forlorn South Carolina will imitate the resignation of bereaved Ohio, and strive to reconcile herself to her loss. Now for thc Nutmeg State ! Connecticut holds her election on Monday, the 3d of April, and the Radicals are shak? ing in their boots with fear lest she should follow the lead which New Hampshire has so nobly set. Politically, Connecticut has shown herself of late years anything but the "Land of Steady Habits." In fact no State of New England hus so often shifted her parti status. In 1868 she gave English, Democrat, for Governor 1764 majority. This was at the spring election. IrHhe following fall General Grant, for President, carried the State by 2936 majority. In 1869 Jewell, Re? publican, had 411 majority. In 1870 the ta bles were again reversed, and English, Dem oerat, was elected by 843 majority. It will thus be seen that the State is very close, and that a few hundred votes have generally de? cided the result In the Forty-first-Congress the delegation of Connecticut consisted of three Republicans and ono Democrat, the 11 majorities being respectively 736, 424, 2399 and H60, l Ii. Decided Snub. |J 1 Greeley, in bis TW?une, does not comment f very kindly upon the maiden speech of the ?rst black representative of South Carolina. He says Mr. Elliott, one of South Carolina's new| representatives, asserted on Tuesday that the Ku-Klux disturbers of the South are 'the very class of men whom lt is proposed to relieve ol their political disabilities.' In the absence of proof, probabilities are eutitled to. weight, ?ind Mr. E.'s naked assertion does not suffice to prove that the ralduijiht riders and raiders in masks and multiform disguises, by whom the South ls now disturbed, are the ex-colonels, ex-legislators and ex?ma!;lstrates ol the old slavebolding regime who are alone excluded from office by existing disabilities. Ii Mr. E. had asserted that pears and watermelons are generally stolen by clergymen and deacons fifty to eighty years old, his mistake would not be more obvious than it now ls." "Tricks Hint arc Vain." Scarcely a day passes that we do not get one or more communications from persons who have been honored with the lithographed circulars of the pretended dealers in counterfeit currency, or of some other of the thousand and one swindling concerns which have of late years Bprung up every where over the North. Generally the recipients of these precious missives want them published in the THE NEWS, and modestly appeal to us to "expose the ras cab." And al? though every newspaper expects to do its best for the protection and enlightenment of the fools, for onr own part we cannot re? cognize any obligation to perform a like office for the knaves. Tiic German Conquests. The Northern papers publish a most im? probable statement that owing to 'the de? termined resistance of the people of Alsace and Lorraine to German rule, and owing also to the injurious competition which the manulacturers-of Germany will encounter in those provinces, Bismarck proposes to re? turn both AJsace and Lorraine to France for a money consideration of $300,000,000. This can hardly be considered an over-estimate of the value of 12,279_sqnare miles of territory and 2,747,761 population, either absolutely or relatively to other sales of a like charac? ter. A per capita tax of One- hundred dol? lars on the people would pay the whole. And there are the manufactures and various inter? ests of the territory to contribute in addition. Still we cannot but regard the statement that the Germans will surrender for a money con? sid?ration the slice which they have been at so much pains to carve out of French terri? tory as one of worse than doubtful accuracy. AT LAST we begin to hear plain talk from the Great West on the subject of Free Trade and Revenue Reform. The radical Chicago Post insists upon the immediate and abso? lute abolition of every form of duty upon such necessaries as coal, salt,'?c., and adds : "Taxation should be levied for the single "purpose ef revenue, and not to favor any "class or section. Ail the West asks is "open markets and a clear field for it3 pro? ductions, and a chance to buy where it can "make the best bargains. Tiiat right it is "going to insist on, and public men who "stand in the way will be crushed politically "as certain as the w?rld moves."
