Referring to our Columbia letters, it will tje seen that the'dominant faction in tho lower House of the L?gislature have perpe? trated au outrage, which calls for the denun? ciation of all honest men. Tire Chesterfield ?election case bas been decided against the Reform candidates, and in favor of their Radical contestants. This wai done in de? fiance of the majority report, the evidence in the case, and the plea^f Mr, Audell, whose-, efforts to/do a jost thing by placing bis name on the re^rdin-favor.of thc light was con-j tumeliodBly rejected. * r It should not escape the observation of j ?'' the public that while the Kou?e?f Represen? tatives of the United States,' which gav%, some years, agc-, the badprecqderr?cf ousting' Democratic membershy.thje?T^br?/af power, has receutly shown a disposition to recog? nize and respect the will of the public, the House of Representatives of South Carolina surpasses the bad eminence of its old exem piar, and steadily refuses to imitate its change for the better. This is significant. It means that even a Radical sanhedrim at 'Washington begins to perceive what a Radi? cal junta' in South Carolina fails to under? stand. It means that the day of arrogant assumptions of force is well-nigh -spent at the Federal capital, but still continues .at the capital of this State. The] eye3 of the Radical magnates in Con? gress are being opened to the fact that retri? bution is still a principle of the world's gov? ernment ; therefore are they a little wise In J?rhe.. But Minder than moles ate Che ignor? ant arid, veo al legislators at Columbia, who fancy perchance that the future has no -Teveoges, and that the deluge will-not come -& their time: "We tell" them, however, that ..every wicked invention of theirs shall return at. no .distant period to plague tuena, and when, ns ls sure to be -the case, a f ature ".Democratic or Conservative General Aesew bty shall take the place of the present Radi ^calj.c?ncern, the precedent oJT ousting dis? tasteful members may be remembered, and made available with a vengeance. The Legislature would have been suf? ficiently overwhelming ra Radicalism,, even, if the Chesterfield Reform candidates had re? tained their seats in a?corda?ce^witb the law of the casec?nd report of the majority. The mys tery^f^'ibelr defeat -ls-eaTBily solved, when tue Tumor gains strengtii, and be? comes at least a probability, thri the Radi? cal contestants now seated are"-the corrupt creatures of The Ring, whe^in."defiance of the Eiesta^ve and the -Conservive mem? bers, favorr&ilway and other svftodfes, which promise to put money in the purses of a few' j manipulators, but would ultimately bankrupt j ..the Commonwealth. Like the strong man of old, it is easy to "tffcnd the oak and rend the State; but they Who practice 6uch feats of prowess bad [bet- j ter beware of the rebound which has come at Washington, and will come even in South Carolina-. Attention to Details. . The Richmond Whig says it-tmist be con? fessed that dislike, approaching even to dis? gust, for details, hus always been a promi? nent defect in Southern character. The general bas too much prevailed over the particular in all that pertained to? domestic Interests. Federal relations would "attract more iuterest than agricultural, -commercial and professional affairs. It is remarkable /that while more was heard of Stale rights in .the South than elsewhere, the chief aim of tte political ambition was directed to a na? tional arena, and that whilst less was heard ?in the North of State rights, and more of the ;-giory and greatness of che nation, most of its leading men devoted themselves to pro? fessional pursuits, and to commercial, man infacturing and ?rfd us trial .development of their own section. The consequence was that while the nation flourished under the guidance of Southern statesmen, their -own States, which occupied so much more digni? fied a place ra their theory than their prac? tice, lost ground materially, and, as a conse? quence, politically, whilst the North, direct ing it? energy to ijs own development, grew strong and gr??t, and by attending faithfully to its private' and local interests, gradually obtained the control of those which were general. . The salvation-of the South now depends . upon correcting the injurious tendency of . former-times to look tob?me grand.political panacea as the remedy for its woes, and practicing upon the simple truth ennnciated j by the Richmond Whiff, that "solid national "wealth^ the offspring of individual ex "ertion," and that individnal exertion, to be successful, must be systematic, and devoted to particulars as weil as to the general. The varied agriculture appropriate to Virginia and the Carolinas, in grain growing, fruits, ?fcc, and the adaptation to"manufactures, specially call for-particular and careful de? tail. Ic the enterprises of peace aa in- those of war, the most successful- are those Who, wnfie they- are able to ?rasp and handle great and comprehensive seneraes, do not neglect the most minute poises. In the or? dinary vocations of life ne-capacity for great things is required, bot there is none in which attention to that which is particular ls un? important. What is it that makes the re? spectable Northern mao coming to the Sooth to engage in legitimate pursuits succeed so well, but the unwearied assiduity and pa? tience with which he bustes himself with the material interests in detail whieh lie around . him, neglected by too many here, as well as in States further South ? He finds openings and new materials of commerce in hum?le objec s which we had either overlooked or despised, and#thus not only improves 4iis I own condition, hut increases' the general wealth. < Greeley Growling! .'The"? 30ldier-shriekers in York County, Whoever they may.be, nave alarmed the F-Kew York Tribut** and cause 'Lit ?emo? tional journal to relie ve itself in these words : "Down in York County, South Carolina, sundry enterprising people have been mining for froid. We don't know what their luck has been, but it. would.probobly have been better only that the rascally Ku-Elux interfered with the operators and the operations: Upon this, application ls made to the Secretary ol War for military protection. He refers them to General Sherman, who replies land nowto mes the extraordinary part of the affair) that 'our j .army .ls too small to undertake to protect In r rllvidua1! men or their interests.' So the peti? tioners are referred to a Congress committee engaged in investigating outrages at the 'South !" And we suppose that the Congress comrnlttee will ponder very deeply, and in [ dee time provide what General Sherman cal ls .a general and adequate remedy.' We most beg leave to doubt the Justice, cr the good* policy of referring men, in dally" danger of being murdered, and continually impeded in their honest*lndustry, to a Congress commlt [ tea^ .'Individual men and their interests' is a nice piece of convenient Tpenerailzatlon; but society and ita a Uki nt are made, of individuals and of private Interests, and it happens to be just these that the rufflaniy Ku-Klux nod lt roost convenient to assail, while lt ls Just these which the government is bound to protect. It the army ls too small to enforce law and order in York County, South Carolina, then the army ls small indeed. But we suppose that a squad.of twenty-five muskets would be enough for the gold miners, and we can't spare even these." . Lesp The Tribune should demand an im? mediate addition of five million men to the standing'' army (convenient instrument of all despotisms,) we take occasion to say that Governor Scott is ready, and able, to give the York gold miners all the protection they need. When tho State authorities, with the assistance of the people of the Slate-which will be cheerfully given, if necessary-are unable to keep peace in these York diggings, we will anxiously Implore The Tribune to seadAis its squad o? twenty-five inuskels expeeted-to be more potent than all the law and the prophets, and sixty thousand white Carolinians. The Savannah Advertiser .flies into a passion because TUE CHARLESTON NEWS copies a statement by the Baltimore Sun that, according to the United States census, _U*o population of Savannah has.ducreased 8fe?evi86U It ts far more pleasant t? us to think that tho population of Sa? vannah has increased than the reverse, and-we willingly give publicity to Tie Ad? vertiser's statement UiaLSavaunah has gain ted "?OOO since I86D. Ai the sane ttme we suggest to our contemporary,- that it is tiot worth While to rose one's temper about so small a matter, to Charlestou eyes, as an in? crease of only six thousand in population.
