Mr. Hankie confirms this state? ment. It remains to be seen what Mr. Hague, who has, wo believe, returned only recently to Columbia, - has to say upon this branch of a very unpleasant subject. The pamphlet states that Germany has at ber disposal, for military service, from three and one-third to three and one-half percent., or .1,283,000 to"l,347,000 men, while Aus? tria, nuder her present military system, could not raise over 911,000 soldiers for her army. ThoetGermany has 699,000 infantry, 74,375 cavalry? and .1794 guns, while Aus? tria has only 579,000 infantry and 49,460 cava'.r and 1248 guns. Germany, moreover, bas 65,000 horses always ready in time of peace, and Austria has only 27,265 horses. Under these circumstances it ia argued that should a war break oat Germany could at once monet nearly all her cavalry, while Austria would have to collect over 20,000 horses above her peace establishment The writer also argues that Germany has great advantages over ber neighbors In the rapidi? ty with which her troops caa -be equipped and sent into the flwld, and that consequent? ly every State on her frontier which cannot equal her in the effectiveness and precision of her military organization, ls, la danger of invasion. It ls generally conceded on this side of the Atlantic that the Franco-German war is fast, drawing to.a close; but in Europe, where the journalist is nearly as well in? formed as he is in this land of freedom, it is the common opinion that the end is far off. The Berlin National Zeitung says that it knew from the first that "a war be "tween. Germany and France would be no "short or easy matter. The Vienna Wanderer says : "It is crucially admitted to be possible that' "the straggle may not end with the-fall of "Paris; that lt is only thetrthat the work tn '/the provinces will begrd in earnest; that "new armies are being formed in the North,' "South and West ; and when these are dis? persed, what then!" The Vienna Neue Freie Press declares that "in the present po? sition of affairs it is clear that the war may "yet last for an indefinite time, and require "enormous sacrifices, without the contend? ing patties being in a condition to enter "into negotiations' for the conclusion of "peace." We might multiply similar ex-'| tracts; bat we have given enough to indi? cate the drift of European thought in regard to the war. COLONEL KERRIGAN/ID his communication to THE NEWS, said that Messrs. Pearsen, Gibbs, Smith, West and Sumner, of Union County, were marked out for slaughter. This is rather strange, considering that Col? onel Baker, who employed the New York excursionists, speaks in high terms of Messrs. Sumner and Gibbs. No one of thc gentlemen-named is obnoxious to-any class of citizens In the county. Mr. Hoggett says that Messrs. David Gist, ex-Sheriff Smith, and Sheriff Rodgers were to" be the victims. Mr. Gist obtained leave to organize a com? pany of militia, which Governor Scott after? ward declined lo accept, but he has le<=s to do with the Ku-Klux iban Mr. Hoggett has. There is no such mao in the county, we be? lieve, as ex-sheriff Smith. It is evident, however, that where there is so mach smoko there mast b? some fire, and we are inclined to think that Colonel Baker and Joe Crews know much more about this assassination business than they have yet dared to tell.
