We print the answer of Judge Vernon to the resolutions of the House of Representa? tives, charging him with contempt. This answer make3 it plain that Judge Vernon's * offence was the discharge of the Laurens - prisoners in tho performance of bis judicial 'duty, contrary to the wishes of Joe Crew3 & Go. A Republican contemporary insists that "politics should have nothing to do "with the impeachment" of Judge Vernon, .and that the "questions to be decided simply -"concern his discharge of his official duties, ?or his failure, as alleged, to discharge tho3e . -"duties." But, unfortunately, politics and .Joe Crews have had a great deal to do wjth this unpleasant business. ' A RESOLUTION has been aceptad in the House of Representatives calling on the Board of Commissioners in each county to make a foll report of their transactions during .the past three years, and of the total debts now dole by each county. Doubtless the Charleston Commissioners will be able to make a report which will be highly interest? ing if highly unsatisfactory. MR. NILES G. We would call the attention of the reading .public to the above work, (which will at some some future time, If encouraged, be completed in another -volume,) and urge Its claims for 'purchase and perusal upon two grounds: First, its intrinsic interest and value; and secondly, its claims as a work of Southern authorship. Southern history and Southern manulacture. First, the book contains a valuable outllue of the history of South Carolina, in its religious aspect, preliminary to its permanent settle? ment in the year 1663. This occupies the ?rrt book, containing three chapters, detailing those events which led to thc emigration of so many of the original settlers of this country from the Kingdoms of England, Scotland, Ire? land and France. In book second will be found a detail of the leading events connected with the permanent settlement of South Carolina from 1663 to UJ35. The remaining thirteen books give us very interesting contemporaneous history of the formation, early struggles with the Indians, .and various trials of the French and other Presbyterian refugees from thc religious bigo? try and persecution at home, and of their va? rious vicissitudes of progress and prosperity, andas to some decline, until the year 1800. The history of the French Huguenot churches, from their first formation in various portions of Ute low country, until the final ab? sorption o? most of them into other churches, w?l be found given with great minuteness of detail, and mast be very interesting to thc nu? merous descendants from those honored exiles. In the second place, we would urge the pur? chase and perusal of this book, by all who can possibly afford it, on thc ground of patriotic support of what is, in every sense, Southern, and especially South Carolinian. The author is one of the oldest and mst venerable profes? sors of the Theological Seminary at Columbia. -;This work, as we can testify, is the result ot his patience, through laborious and wide extended researches for a period of twenty years. The work is got up with good paper, type and bindiup by Messrs. Duffie & Chap? man, ol Columbia, and at a price wiiich re? quires the sale of the large portion of what is printed to pay expenses. It is a notable and encouraging sign of Southern progress that three works of such permanent value, prominent Interest and large expenditure os Dr. Dabney'3 work oa Sacred Rhetoric, Dr. Thornwelfs works, (of which volume 1 is now ready,) and this work of Dr. Howe, should be presented to the Southern public by Southern publishers about the same time. And as lt ls of vital importance to the South to foster and reward its own author? ship and publications on educational and all kindred subjects, let not this spirit of enter? prise oe discouraged or swamped.
