Cavalry Song. Ere dying, ere dying. Hoir green the young grassis to see, Yet soon as roses red 'twill be. Ita blades my life-blood dyeing I This draueht of wine, with sword m band, I quaff lt for my fatberiaud, Ere dy mg, ere dying. And quickly fl? the cup again; To Liberty tins drau?rut I drain, For which we all arc sighing And what remains?-whose shall it be ? Atoast to thee, all Germany, Breading, ere dying. Xo love-nay. empty is the glass, Then send its fragments to my lass l I hear the bullets flying; Like lightning ou tlis foe i ride ! At dawn of day, O joy and pride, Ol dying, of dying. THE WOES OF WEST rOINT. Almost a Revolution-Dissatisfaction of the Cadets-The Colored Favorite. [Correspondence of the New York World.] WEST TOINT, December io. Sit it down if you will as a boyish prank or as the ebullition of a boyish arger, but whatever it was, this famous place was a short time since nearly becoming the scene of an event unparal? leled in the history or military academies. In? stead of the absurd representation or ihe battle of Sedan, which General CptoD, amid the sn. iles of cadets and* officers, bas endeavored to enact, Beeret preparations were ac nally made foran armed mutiny of the corps. Eight hundred ball cartridg-n were abstracted, and, had the oc? casion brought forth a man willing or caraple of lead ir 2 the cadets, the United States troops might now be investing this historic spot, and debating whether to bombard lt or starve out the juv<-nlle Trochus. But lhere were nc tuen willmg/to form the provisional government, and General Upton is atm commandant, and Cadet Smith is stu! in clover. Doubtless lt is a very ludicrous thing to hear young officers and cadets soberly discuss ihe prospects of thia rising; but lt becomes qui!c se? rious when it ls regarded as an indication of the utter dissatisfaction felt by the young men at their tre-tment by their commanding officers. When men en m?ste become restive under a strained discipline, it is hardly meeting the exi? gencies of the case to sneer at the ab.-urd reme? dies which '.tey ?propose to take into their own hands. Ihe opinion that the disciplinarians are st fault Is quite as likely to be coirect as that the murmurers arc undisciplined. But when, in ad? dition to exicsslve et ifni-en cy on thc parc of official--, there is added a suspicion that their po - JJtlcal bifA prejudices their Judgment, and this In an institution which trains the future soldiers of the country, the situation grows vcrv aiarmlug. I suppose I need not say the apple i discord at present at the Point is the cheerful colored cadet, 5. w. With. Dc ls the chler eouiceof thc trou? bles, but not the only one. He ls, Indeed, an eye? sore to the corp.?, but they have other more sub? stantial grounds of complaint. It ls unfortunate for poor Smltn that h- WHS ever sent here, as it ls always untoriunate forpcr-ous without the edu? cation or the instinct* of a higher class of society to be forced by circumstances Into it. Smith may be a very excellent yoong person among his om? ore ? brethren, who look upon breaches of parole er occasional lapses from truth and good man? ners with h:iie disfavor, but this ls not the dis ' position of men train? d to a high sense of profes? sional honor, lt ls commonly supposed that the entire dislike of the cadets for Smiihis due to sis color. This la not ihe case; while there is an almost universal objection to his presence on this ground, It certainly would have Leen less had thc * representative ofahe future colored soldiers been" persona!ly less ot-v'c louable. Yon will or course understand that alt ibo statements I make in this letter are not made from my own knowledge, but from the aiatements or those whom I believe to be cogntzan: of the facts. I therefore may state that note vf a the President's own relative herc las been able to perfectly appreciate the excel lenee of young Mr. Smith. Your readers doubt? less understand that there arc two laws govern? ing West Point-the written law of the Rules and Regulations, and the unwritten law of the esprit *ecorps.. The latter ls probably the strc'ter of | the tr-o. Its violation ls im mem at ely punlsoed by the exclusion of the cadet from the society of the corps. Want of manliness or truthfulness, or of gentlemanly heiring under ali circumstances, violations 01 parole-as for instance, in breach or arrest-are punished by cadets In their own school or natural justice, quite as effectively as by courts martial. Mr. Smitn is accused of various violations of bis parole, and of making himself otherwise disagreeable by his indisposition to meet the consequences or his act, witbont appeal lag to th-- authorities "Tattling" was never muon admired at the Point, or elsewhere, among high-spirited young men. It is specifically alleged shat Smith, hy breaking his arrest .three times, Waa declared by the Judge advocate to have been guilty or s quibble little. U* at all, short of an un? truth, In hti< official explanation. This statement bas been made to me with mach positiveness, as lt was also stated that the-same oniclul declared that M . Smith should be dismissed the service. Nevertheless, the influence or 0. O. Howard was sufficient to have bim retained. This bas not in creas, d the good feeling at the Pome The young men point ont that while twenty one members of their corps have been pieced under arrest, and six have been dismissed without nial, and th em ru rs have been suspended equally wimont trial, f r comparatively trivial of? fences or for no offences at all, Mr. Smith has bean treated with unexampled tenderness by both officers and courts martial They say that If his offences are sncb as would oblige the withdrawal of white cadets from the Academy, why retain sim? Why not render equal and exact Justice to him, even ir-justice means deserved punishment? This is the real sm c point of the trcuble; that ex? ceptions have been muds m his favor because lt ?has been known t'tat he has Co greesional friends, ^who are more or. less pledged to regard every action unfavorable tu him os an act of persecu? tion. The cadets further complain that thc dismissal prerogative nos been very ?arar-lyused lately, and without t lal. That this should result. In rolstai es is easily seen, and some of them, it Is hoped, will be notified hythe interposition of the Piesident, who bas become acquainted with thecrcutn atancea through bis sou, "who has takcu tue mat? ter np." 1 am informed ; but imagine thc risk Jus? tice runs when it depends on the a cidoni of the Pres dent's son being a? le to inte:est Foccessfnlly his father in the correciiou or a grts>. mistake. t'OirHIEllCI.lL NEWS.
