FIRST NIGHT OF THE FLORENC-S AT THE ACIDE:MT.-The reappearance' of the favorite store, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Florence, upon the Charleston boards last evening, after the lapse or eleven years, was a notable event In the -evlval or things dramatic In our city. The pieces pre? sented were not. perhaps, those best adapted to display to the greatest advantage the powers of these excellent artists, yet their lively, finished and, above all, natural acting, at once establish? ed them in the sympathy of their delighted audi? ence, convincing their old friends that time had In no wise checked the flow of their spirits, or dulled the keenness of their humor, and winning', for tn em many an enthusiastic admirer among those who- had never seen- them before. Mr. Florence has probably no equal upon the stage as a personaler of Irish character, and bis Paddy O'Ratferty was a complete dramatic triumph, from beginning to end. But the audience were even more pleased with the light, sparkling and viva? cious acting ol Mrs. Florence in the Protean role of "Mischievous Annie.." Miss Keene deserves credit for having effected an engagement which ls so sure to prove a treat to thc cultivated por? tion of the community. And here lt ought to be added, In justice to the Florences, that during and after the war they ap-' peared lu another than a professional role, and performed upon a stage In which the actors were our own Confederate prisoners or war-maimed, broken-hearted and unhappy. These found gene? rous .r lend s and open-handed charity in Mr. and Mrs. Florence, both of whom united In alleviating want, and lifting the weight of the gaunt hand of misfortune which so heavily pressed on those lonely men. There are scores of gentlemen, nut ?n'y In Charleston, but in nearly every Southern City, who were the recipients of their bounty and soil i sympathy duriug thc dark hours of 1864 and 1S65, and the present occasion should not be permitted to pas? without some evidence that our people appreciate and reciprocate the -friendly offices thus bestowed. The Academy of Music ought to be filled every night. Tue entertainment ls the best of the kind lu America. Mr. Florence is an unalloyed Irishman. Mrs. Florence ls an unadulterated female Proteus; and together, ? either as actors or individuals, they deserve our best commendation and support. To night, "Handy-Andy " and the "Young Actress." ' THE CHARLESTON ASSOCIATION.-The one hundred and nine teem h session of this, the old - desi or the associations of the Baptist denomina? tion of our State, was held this year' with the Bethel Church of Sumter County. The meet lng of the bo?y occuned ar the usual time, Saturday" before the first Sunday In November, and closed on the Tuesday following. Their deliberations were marked by great harmony and unanimity of sentiment on all matters submitted to their consid?ration. B. C. Pressley, Esq., or this city, presided over the deliberations as moderator. In theabseaceotthe Rev; B.-T. Winkler, the regular appointee, the Introductory sermon was preached by the Rev. S. M. Richardson, the alternate. The number of delegates In attendance was thought to be larger than at any time since the war. Vue charity sermon on Sunday was preached by the Rev. Thomas W. Melllchamp, to a large congre, gatton. Dr. Samuer, the chairman of the domes? tic mission board of the Southern Baptist Conven? tion, was present, and presented the claims of the missionary cause, and ? especially home mis? sions, apon the visitors and members ot the asso? ciation. Besides the mission work, the other matter of general interest which claimed the at? tention of the association was the scheme for the permanent endowment of the Furman Uni? versity; a proposition to raise $200,000 by bonds bearing interest, and payable In instalments, the first falling due January, 1875, and to furnish free tuition to all applicants. The agent, Rev. j. K. Mendenhall, presented the claims of the in? stitution. Between $4000 and $5000 in bonds were obtained. The enterprises of the association were reported in a flourish ng condition. Sunday schools received a considerable share of attention. The finances of the body are in a sound condition, though need is felt for more funds to carry on the benevolent enterprises under Its charge. The-collection on Sunday amounted to $143 30 in cash, and $80 In bonds; more than double any similar collection taken, up since the war. The time of meeting was changed from Saturday to Thursday before the first Sunday in November. The next meeting of the' association will be with the St. George's Church, Colleton County. The regular appointments for dlviae service are as follows: Introductory sermon, Q. D. Durham; alternate, N. Graham. Charity sermon,'E T. winkler; alternate, L. H. Shuck. i BOWEN AND DELARGE PROTEST.-A corres? pondent of the Kew York Tribune, writing from Washington under date of November ll, saja : "Ur. Bowen, the present member, writes here that he will contest the seat of DeLarge, the col? ored Congressman elect from the Second South Carolina District. NATIONAL MEDICINE.-ONE can hardly pick np a newspaper or furn a street corner now-a-days that he does not And, staring him in the face, the announcement that Professor so-and-so has Just discovered a medicine which ls a panacea for all the Ills that flesh ls or may be heir to. These "wonderful" discoveries usually have an existence of a few months, then disap? pear from public notice. The reason or their sud? den extinguishment Is apparent. They were humbugs. At the outset all medical preparations have as equal chance for success, as all are equal? ly unknown; but the chaff ls soon winnowed from the grain by the practical test which au unpreju? diced public applies to all things. There are but few preparations of medicine which have with? stood the Impartial Judgment of the people for any length or time. One of the few which we have now in mind, and which has been a long time familiar to nearly every household m the laud, ls the celebrated HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS. Their almost universal sale and use, and their emphatic endorsement from all portions of the country, compel the admission that they must be a specific for the ailments for which they are recommended. Letters before us attest their efficacy In diseases of the throat, bowels and liver. In that truly terrible complaint, dyspepsia, they are regarded as a sore cure. In Pittsburgh, where these Bitters are manufactured, their sale j for home use ls immense. This fact alone speaks volumes In their favor.-Extracts from the Mus cattne Courier, iowa, Febmary 7, 1867. nOYlZ-MOft Net? Publications. .pOGARTLE'S BOOK DEPOSITORY.
