INCREASING THRIFT OF THE FREEDMEN.-I Four years ago it ls stated the freedmen's sav? ings banks were taking in less than a thousand douars a day in deposits. They now average fourteen thousand dollars a day. Lu March, 1866, they had $199,283 in their vaults; in March, 1870, ' $1,657,000. Of the twenty-six cashiers in the va? rious branches, thirteen are colored men. Of the twelve million dollars which the freedmen's banks have taken, at least* one-half is said to have been saved for actual investment. These a raountB are small compared with the colored population, yet J they show progress in the right direction. THS SKATING RINK in the upper hall of the AC aoo my or M aa ic was, on Saturday evening, a scene or rare animation and fun. The skilled and graceful lady skaters are now quite numerous, and multiplying every evening; while the number of awkward wights who distinguish themselves by ground and lofty tumbling, though still large enough to afford abundant food for merriment to the philosophic spectators, steadily decreases. The rink on Saturday evening was more , densely filled than on any previous occasion. This' afternoon it wUl be open again from 4 to 6 o'clock. ^_ LECTURE ON THE VATICAN COUNCIL AND TUE INFALLIBILITY OF THR POPE.-The good and learned Father Garesche, whose preaching has drawn such crowds to the Cathedral Chapel du? ring the past week, has kindly consented to give a lecture on the subject or the in fallibility or the Pope, at Hibernian Ha.ll, on Wednesday evening next, for the benefit 'of the orphan girls under , -charg?of the Sisters or Mercy. The charitable j object lo view, the interest attaching to the topic, and the reputation or the earnest and eloquent lecturer, render a large audience a matter or | course. Tickets may be procured at the Convent of Mercy, Queen street, from the' reverend clergy throughout the city, at the stores of Messrs. Ber? nard O'Neill and J. F. O'Neill, on the Bay, at Mr. O'Mara'a-book store and Dr. Almar's drug store. ? CRUMBS.-Messrs. John Reed was arrested Saturday for assault? ing a man and Wounding him with a slang-shot, at the Northeastern Railroad Depot. There was no session of the United States Court Saturday. The Battery ls an attractive spot late in the -afternoon, and ls frequented by a large crowd or persons of both sexes. A colored man named Wm. Hicks, who was given the choice of paying $5 fine and costs or going to jail for twenty days, preferred the latter. Yesterday was very warm. The thermometer in the shade stood at 85. Hardy Solomon has been elected president of the Sooth Carolina Banking aad Trust Company, of Columbia. For the past two days the city has been unu? sually quiet-nothing of general Interest occur? ring. ON THE CATHOLIC FAITH.-The Mission at thc Cathedral closed yes? terday, and the congreB.it : a will not soon forget the zealous divine by wnom it was conducted This (Monday) evening, at 9 o'clock, Father Gar esche will begin a course of sermons on doctrinal subjects, which will be of interest to the general public as well as to Catholics. These discourses will not be of a controversial character, but sim? ply explanatory of the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church. The subject of the sermon this evening will be "Confession." DEATHS.-We have received the intelligence of the death or the Rev. Edward C. Cage, which occurred on the evening of the 20th instant, at Graniteville, in Edgeneld County. He was a na? tive of Unionvllle, tn this State, and had been a member of the South Carolina Conference for about fifteen years. He was formerly pastor or the Marion Street M. E. Church, in Columbia, but latterly had charge of the Aiken and Graniteville churches. Mrs. Farr, wife of Mr. R. C. Farr, of Onion, died on Saturday, the nth inst., after an inness of forty-five hours._ GRATIFTINO SUCCESS or THE CAROLINA PRIMA DONNA.-The New York papers speak in h lgh terms of the debut in Italian opera of Miss Isabella Mcculloch, the favorite Carolina vocal? ist. The Heraldsa.v? editorially: "IsabellaMccul? loch, a roseate flower from the gardens of South Carolina, about whose history there hangs that charm of romance which belongs more to the In? ner and domestic life of a girl studying and struggling for success than to the mere glare or stage rame, has made an impression on the publie that will not be rorgotten. If ever there was an Illustration of what industry and careful study, added to fine natural gifts and inspired by a no? bie ambition, can accomplish, the perfection which Miss Mcculloch has reached as an artiste Tarnishes that example, which may be wisely fol? lowed by other students of the divine art." THE MAILS ON THE SAVANNAH A.ND CHARLES? TON RAILROAD.-The section of this State tra? versed by the Savannah Railroad has always been remarkable since the war for the meagre? ness of Its mall faculties. There are only five post-offices along the line of road between Charles? ton and Savannah, and though the stations are numerous, the residents are compelled to get their mall matter through some one of these five offices, or go without. Cntll within the past two weeks this evil was somewhat remedied by the attention or the mall agent, who distributed letters and pa? pers at all points, where the postage was prepaid. A circular letter recently received from Mr. French, the special'agent of the Postoftice Depart? ment, expressly prohibits the continuance of this plan, and orders mau matter to be left only at the regular accredited postoffices. A large number of persons living along the Hue of road have pre? paid the postage on their papers, but this will avaU nothing, as the orders are stringent. The magnates of the railroad and po3tofflce depart? ment are now considering a contract, and soon, perhaps, an additional mall agent wiU bc put on the route, which wu i give a daily, instead of a tri? weekly mail as at present. It will, however, in? terest the sufferers to know that lt requires but lit? tle solicitation on their part to obtain a post office, and Indeed nearly all of the stations on the raUroad were postofnees before the war. An application to the proper authorities at Washing? ton would, no doubt, be favorably received and acted upon, and a benighted section or the globe opened to the light or civilization. The large number of the readers of THE NEWS in that sec? tion, who have been bewailing their loss of mall privileges, should take prompt steps.to have the evu remedied. SELLING OUT WHITE POINT GARDEN AND THE ARTESIAN WELL.-Public notice ls given that the Artesian Well and White Point Garden will be sold by the sheriff, on the 6th or June, to satisfy an execution held by the executors of George Gib? bon for over due city stock, amounting to about $40,000. The Artesian WeU was for many years a pet pro |ect. Water was first struck at a depth of lTOO or 1500 feet, some eighteen years ago. This encour? aged the city to undertake the sinking or a larger shaft, and the work was proceeding satisfactorily when the war began. AU operations were then suspended, and when tbe war ended the new shaft was found to be clogged. Many Ineffectual attempts have been made to remove the obstructions, and the weU property ls now under lease for a term or years. The water, which is suppUed by the smaller shaft, ls not pleasant to the unaccustomed taste, but ls of great medicinal value. In casea>of dyspepsia it ls said to be a really certain cure. At one time lt was hoped that all Charleston might be supplied with Artesian water, and large sums were offered the city Tor a lease of the well. The White Point Garden, or South Bay Battery, ls our prettiest promenade. From lt ls obtained a fine view of our grand harbor, as well as of the placid waters or the Ashley and Cooper rivers, in the summer evenings it is crowded with the good people of Charleston, all eager to scent the fresh breeze and enjoy the beauties of the scene. White Point Garden has been in its present shape for about twenty years. Prior to that time, a narrow walk ran from Meet? ing street to King street. This was really a smau breakwater. On the east side the walk extended only as far as the house of General wu mot O. DeSaussure. In front of this house were some buildings which were bought lu by the city from time to time and torn down. These pur? chases and the reclamation of land from the river enabled the authorities to lay out the pres? ent White Point Garden. - . Strange to say there seems to be very little pubUc Interest In the sale or this property-really one of the lungs of Charleston. Surely some? thing should be done to save lt to the people of the city. _ _ BUSINESS NOTICES. Such ls the threefold operatlcn of HOSTET TERS STOMACH BITTERS, and hence the great superiority or that standard vegetable restorative overall medicines that are merely tonics and nothing else. The effect of the ordinary astrin? gent tinctures and extracts upon the bowels ls disastrous, and upon thc depraved blood or bile they produce no beneficial effects whatever. In dyspepsia and liver complaint all the fluids and humors of the body are more or less Infected, and the bowels are often badly constipated. An un? modified astringent-quinine for Instance-does Infinitely more harm than good In such cases. In HOSTETTER'S BITTERS, on the other hand, the stimulating and tonic elements are qualified with aperients and antiseptic ingredients. The finest laxatives and blood depurents tn the vegetable kingdom are intermixed with those of a purely Invigorating nature, and under the operation of this admirable combination, the three Important processes of Invigoration, regulation and puri? fication go on together. The rapidity with which the disordered organization returns to its natural condition, under a course of thc Bitters, ls due to this cause. Every disturbed function of the body ls favorably atfected by the various properties of this comprehensive and wei! balanced prepara? tion. As a general rule the bowels are more sub? ject to Irregularities, and the fluids more liable to become vitiated lu spring and summer than In winter, and hence the Bitters are espeolally valu? able as a spring and summer alterative, correc? tive and lnvlgorant. At all seasons where the seeds of Intermittent fevers infect the air, this healthful vegetable elixir should be taken as a protective medicine._may20-6D?c pa-k GRAND EPOCH IN SCIENCE.
