The opera o? Maritana, if not as catching and bright in its concerted pieces as Balfe's Bo? hemian Girl, contains a number of songs which are known wherever the English tongue is spoken, and gives the principal characters an am? ple opportunity of showing their skill as actors. The acting, indeed, as compared with that of thc earlier nights or the season, was thc strong point of the performance of last evening. Miss Richings, as Maritana, sang charmingly, aud the well known "Scenes that are Brightest'" was so delicately rendered as to receive a hearty encore. The acting of Miss Richings was full of grace and feeling, and in the crises of her career the gay Gitana displayed a warmth and tender? ness which won for her many a round or ap? plause. The Lazarillo or the evening was Miss Annie Kemp, who has been absent Trom the [ boards of tills city for many years. Miss Kemp uses her voice with skill and judgment, which were particularly noticeable In the duett (Laza? rillo and Maritana) "Roly Mother Guide tito Foot- - steps," which was throughly well done. Mr. B owler, whose acting In "La Travlata" and j the "Bohemian Giri" was st??* and tame, entered ? neartily Into the spirit r,; his role, and was an ex? cellent Don Cxsar. The character or thc careless Cavalier, whose debtors never die, was played by i Mr. Bowler with a dash aad liveliness which were , irresistible. In the laminar "Turn on Old Time" Mr. Bowler was not remarkably successrul, but 1 "Farewell, my Gallant Captain" and "Let me t Like a Soldier Fall" were very well delivered. i The role or Doa Jose is not an attractive one, 1 but Mr. Henry Drayton made the most ol lt, aud j sang "In Happy Moments" so as to receive an encore. Mr. Henry C. Peakes had little to sing I as "King Charles," but sang that little well. The chorus singing, as usual, was very good: and the "Pretty Gitana : tell us what the Fates jj Decree'" went off trippingly. To-night Bellini's grand opera, "Norma," will E be performed, for the first time this season. C The Matinee To-Morrow. There will be a matinee performance at the f E Academy of Music to-morrow, for the accommo? dation or schools and ramilles. Eichberg's comic u Dpera, "The Doctor oj Alcantara,'*will be per- C formed on that occasion. Reserved seats tor the matinee, which begins at 12 o'clock, may be had C without extra charge. The price or admission ls jjj reduced to one dollar tor grown persons and fifty :ents for children. C Miss Richings'a Benefit. Norma, the grand opera In which the lights or C the lyric stage have shone most resplendantly, c (rill be performed at the Academy or Music to- Q night. Miss Howson, the Peake Brothers, Mr Bernard and Mr. Warren White, are in the caste, j g is well as the rair prima donna herself. This per 'ormance promises to be In every way highly at- 11 tractive. I E TRIAL J>.STICKS. -It was reported yesterday ?j :hat T. J. jud J. G. Mackey, S. L. Bennett, W. H. Il ?_ D CRUMBS.-It is stated that during the last t leason over three hundred thousand pounds or -uano and phosphates were landed at Mathew's r J)utT, Savannah River, for the use of planters In \ ;he upper portion of Beufort County.
