Nolan was struck on the head several times, and received Injuries which, it ls feared, will result fatally. Kerrigan was arrested by Magistrate J. G. Mackey, and gave heavy bail for his appear? ance for trial. MEETING OF TUB CITY COUNCIL.-A regular meeting of the City Council will be held at o'clock, this evening, when an election will be held to All the vacancy in the board of commis? sioners of the Orphauhouse, caused by the death of Henry Cobla. It is understood that an equalization board will be appointed also. To BB SOLD FOR TAXES.-We learn that in a few days the city sheriff will advertise for sale, ?at public anction, four hundred pieces of real properry, to recover taxes from the owners. Un? less the taxes, aggregating between fifty and sixty thousand dollars, be paid before the first of April, the property will be sold. I. 0. 0. DONK FOR.-A day or two since a colored constable took to jail a colored man named David Morrison, who had failed to give ball to answer the charge of stealing the money till of Von Doh len's granary store, on Anson street. On the way Morrison asked permission to get a drink, which being granted he called for a glassful of whiskey which he drank; but when called upon to pay for -it refused, stating that he was going to jail and he defied the barkeeper to get lt out of him. It waa ordered that the petitioners have fifteen days after-filing of registrar's report, to file the specification in opposition to bankrupt discharge. PROBABLE LOSS OF TUE STEAMSHIP EAGLE. Captain Horsey, of the steamship Falcon, who : arrived here yesterday in his steamer from Balti? more, reports that on Satarday, about ll A. M., made a steamship ashore o a Body Island. The sea was so high that it was with difficulty she was communicated with, when she was found to be the steamship Eagle, from New York for ! Havana. Tn consequence of the high sea prevail? ing. Captain H. was nuable to take orr the passen? gers and crew, as no boat could live alongside the steamer, bat as the beach was within easy reach there was no danger of a loss of life, al? though it was highly probable that thc ship would be lost. There were no particulars roceiv .ed as to the cause or the accident. P. S. Since the above was in type we have re? ceived a telegram from Norfolk announcing that the lower hold of the Eagle was full of wafer. Some or the passengers and crew had already been landed, and the rest would be landed at the next low tide. SALES.-Yesterday Sheriff Mackey sold the .entire contents ol the drug store on the east side of King, between Wentworth and Society streets, for $155. Mr. A. C. WAR BETWEEN TUE DRY GOODS PRINCES.-A "New York letter says : "For se/eral days a desper? ate fight has been going on between Stewart and .dania, the kings of the dry goods market. Stew? ard started it by 'marking down' below Claflin's figures. Clar?n followed suit; Stewart cut down again; then Claflin; then Stewart; then Claflin again; then Stewart once more, and so thc war has gone on for a week. Dry goods men tell me they never saw the market so excited as lt ls by this war between the two great housos. Both parties are selling at prices that are absolutely ruinous. Trade was so disturbed yesterday by their operations that the agents of the different mills held a meeting and decided not to aell to any one except at a certain fixed price. Stewart has been selling some lines far below the agents' prices, (losing heavily, of course,) and they thought to steady the market by giving notice that they wonld not sell to any man who attempt? ed to undersell them. Stewart continues his 'bear* operations, however, and the excitement is rising to a fever. He has demoralized the market to such an extent that lt may take some weeks to restore steadiness. Several lines or seasonable goods are now going at a reduction or thirty to forty per cent, rrom la3t week's prices. The fight ls characterized by outsiders as 'throat cutting,' and all the jobbers are swearing at Stewart like an army fresh from Flanders. Stew? art's pugnacity and capital will carry him through, but houses not as strong as his will probably go by the board before the storm blows .Tor." y AMUSEMENTS. Vin? cent Wallace's grand spectacular and opera? tic play of Lurline, the management cf the Academy yesterday foujad lt necessary, not? withstanding thc double force of carpenters, scenic artists, wardrobe and property makers that have been hard at work, day and night, for the past two weeks, to close the Academy of Music, and devote the evening to a full dress and scenic rehearsal, thereby postponing the flrst public representation uptil this evening, when the piece will be placed upon the stage with unex? ampled splendor and completeness. The reserved seats bought for last night will hold good to-night. Tuesday tickets good Wed? nesday, and so on. Thc Chapmans. The Chapman Sisters and Bishop are playing this week at Wall's Opera House, in Washington. On Saturday evening they closed an engagement of three weeks in Richmond, where, according to the Dispatch, they achieved a success unequalled by any troupe that has appeared in that city since the war. PAINFUL ACCIDENT.-Yesterday Dr. William Rf venel was thrown from his horse, on King, near Cannon street, and had his leg broken below the knee. He was taken to his residence and surgi? cal assistance called tn. At last accounts he was doing well. CRUMBS.-The Missionary Record, edited by Senator R. H. Cain, says that "the closing scenes or the Legislature of South Carolina were both interesting and humiliating, in some respects." If he had said more humiliating than Interesting, he would have stated correctly. The Survivors' Association meets at half-past 7 o'clock,thls evening. Twenty-five physicians (all, except four, in the city) were summoned yesterday to appear before the Mayor to-day, to answer the charge of not having paid taxes upon their horses and buggies. When will man be rid of woman ? Never. A colored man, yesterday, had a dusky damsel ar? rested because she was attempting to draw him from the side of his wife. Four men and one woman were before the Mayor yesterday for being drunk. The Mayor, yesterday, Imposed fines to the amount of twenty -ave dollars. Senator Sawyerls "stumping" the State of New Hampshire for the Republican party. DADDY CAIN AND THE COLORED MEN. Daddy Cain, "Seiator No. 2" from Charleston, is out m a leader in the last number or the Mis? sionary Record, ashing the question, "Sha! the r.- monty of voters have all the representation in this State, or shall the majority have a fair share?" After propounding thU question, he proceeds to answer lt. He flr?? states that the colored people or the State have a majority or one hundred and eighty thousand, and that they arc not, and can? not, be ralrly represented by white men. That lt is seen and known that these "white men will never deal justly by the colored people while they have the exclusive control or all the ?nices and patronage of the government, to give out to their white frieuds to the exclusion of competent col? ored men, who have and are still working to main? tain equal rights to all mea. Out of three hun? dred Federal offices In the gift of representatives and senators of this state,;here have not been ten given to competent eolored men. Possibly a hair dozen little postoffioes, worth fifteen dollars per month, are dried out to a few men in the State to keep their mouths shut and to swear by lu a campaign. Columbia posto ?lice is the only one to which a colored man has been appointed worth the keeping. But not a colored man has been ap? pointed to a revenue office lu the State that we have learned." Cain after arguing that the "colored man's case ls unlike that of any other race of men in this country," and stating that he ls not putting the question wholly on color, says to such Republicans as think the colored men claim too much, that they claim nothing but what belongs to them ; "that they (the white Republicans) have no right to claim to represent colored ?men's Interest, than colored men have to claim the exclusive right to represent colored men. They must not think that Republicanism means te furnish oue class of men with all the offices, while the other class are to do the voting and the dirty work for them, ir this brings on a separation, as Indicated in thc re? marks of Mr. C. P. Leslie, at the close of the Sen? ate on Tuesday evening, then wc shall take the consequences and abide the dread arbitrament of the wheels of time and manifest destiny.
