He was cut with a long sharp knife and beat on thc head with some dull weapon. Ills assailants are not known, though a colored witness testified having seen thc deceased running from two white men. THE CATHOLIC FAIR.-Tito pleasant weather caused a full attendance at thc Hibernia* Halt last night. lu the early part of the evening it was impossible to do more than walk slowly around thc tables. This jam was the harvest time for those carrying rattle INts, nnd the continued tin? kle of the bell proved that thc opportunity had not been lost. Everything went went oil' admira? bly, the tables were attractive, but the assem? blage not less so, and the fair has thus far been a decided success. Thc opera differed widely in incident as well as in music from that with which wc arc all familiar. Thc marching and countermarching of Josephine at the head of her regimcut, so generaily a stuk mg feature of the piece, was omitted altogether; the spirited air of Void ic snore de mon neve, from Offenbach's "Grande Duchisse,"' was s,ub stltutedThroughout for the somewhat- monotonous refrain of the ratapl?n; and more than one pop? ular medley was Interwoven with the more preten? tious music of the opera; but Mrs. Oates' concep? tion of the sprightly vira wlizre was so striking, original and charming, that these little liberties which had been taken with Donizetti's master? piece were not only readily forgiven by thc au? dience, but seemed, in fact, to give new zest to their enjoyment. Mr. Allen, ?though a trltlc less rough in exterior than we would wish to sec him in that part, made a capital Sergeant Scalade, and Mr. Chattcrson looked, acted and sang the part of Gnil'.ot to perfection. Those who had ad? mired Mrs. Sheldon on the previous evenings hardly recognized her as thc droll and stuffy "tittle Corporal." The effect or thc admirable training of the troupe was evident in the perfect smoothness which marked the whole perform auce. But the decided triumph ortho evening was the trio la the second act, by Mr?. Oates, Mr. Allen and Mr. Chattcrson, during which the prima donna was complimented with a shower or bouquets. The pleasant farce of "A Kiss ir- the Dark" opened the evening's entertainment. Mis,s Hay? den, Mr. Sheldon and Mr. Allen sustained the leading parts. At this time lt was blowing half a gale and there was a heavy sea on. We had no pumps in working order, and had to commence bailing with buckets to keep her free. At eight A.M., tlie wind increased, and the sea was breaking over us rast.
