THE FRECXDSCHAFTSBU.VD MASQUERADE BALL.

given on February 3d. one of the events of the
season. Particular attention will be paid to the
the sale ot tickets, and no unauthorized person
will be permitted to take part in thc restivitics or
thc evening. The announcement that a ball
would take place, bas caused thc liveliest excite?
ment in the community. Costumes are being
prepared, and masks ordered for the grotesque
.display. The Freundschaftsbund have heretofore

but it was decided to make this ball public, and
.give the proceeds to the amateur theatre of thc
society. _
THE ACADEMT OF MUSIC-Mr. Hackett was
greeted upon his fourth appearance, last night,
By a fair house. The bill included three pieces,
-"The Limerick Boy," "Monsieur Mallet," and
"His Last Legs." The first ls a pleasant farce, In
which the principal part was borne by Mr. Ryan.
The other two pieces, though of a light
character, were exceedingly well acted, and
served to illustrate in a striking degree the versa?
tility of Mr. Hackett's style. In the chilvalrou3
ex captain of the grande armee, heart broken at
the separation from his long-lost daughter, yet
ever proudly recalling in broken English the
glowing memories of the First Napoleon, not a
trace." was to be found of the doughty Falstaff of
the previous evenings; and the seedy but ready
-wlttpd Irish mock doctor, with his mesmeric
passes and marvellous cures, afTored another
marked contrast to any character lu which we
had yet seen the great comedian. When the cur?
tain fell Mr. Hackett was called out, and bowed
his thanks.
To-night he appears in the grand sensational
and legendary drama of "Rip Yan Winkle." lt
ls a play tint nobody should miss seeing.

pa- IT WAS ANNOUNCED IN THE
Courier of yesterday, that 1 was arrested by Mag?
istrate T. J. Mackey, for malfeasance in oftlco.
This Is a mistake; it was from the office of J. G.
Mackey. I only ask a suspension of public opin?
ion until my conduct can be investigated by thc
Courts of the County, to which i will most assur?
edly appeal. For the present, I would only state
that I arrested *a notorious thief named Dennis
Bill, who was charged wltb committing a larceny
in Florida, and who had fled to Charleston. The
goods were found In hts possession and delivered
to the proper owner, and the prisoner, by thc
order of Governor Scott, handed over to the
authorities of the State of Florida. That port iou
of the money I am ?barged with extorting was
paid to the order ?f his Honer the Mayor, and by
me to the City Treasurer. I would most respect?
fully submit to thc editors of the Courier, that lt
would more comport with even-handed justice
to refrain from giving publicity to cases caleula-"
ted to Injure character, until such cases had un?
dergone public investigation.
