The place where the collision and controversy occurred was in Meeting street, near Burns' lane, where the down grade ls very sudden, and lt ls almost Impossible for the driver to keep the horse in a walk and to turn the curve safely. Food.'1 A large and intelligent audience, among whom we noticed a number of thc fair sex, listened with the greatest attention to the remarks of the JTofessor, which were illustrated by simple aud strikiug experiments. Forced to admit that among these present there were some Imperfectly acquainted with such matters, he chose a middle course between a very elementary and au ad? vanced scicntitlo exposition. SOUTH CAROLINA SECURITIES rt-w A L L STREET.-The New York Herald, of Tuesday, in its report of the stock market for the previous day, says: "The market for Southern securities was excited and active for the Tennessees, which rose to 50 for the new and 55 for the old bonds, many of the 'shorts' being again frightened Into cover? ing, especially as the bondholders' committee arc expecting to meet with a very favorable recep? tion at the hands of both the State Legislature and the Constitntlonal Convention. Thc Virgi? nias were strong, aud the South Carolinas ad? vanced to 75 for thc new bonds. For thc latter there are some large orders lu the market from insurance companies having agencies in South Caroilna^who requires that such corporations do? ing business within her borders shall deposit the security of State bonds with the Comptroller. Walker, Evans k Cogs? well's, No. 3 Broad street, was thronged yester? day by numbers of persons Interested in thc ad? vancement of agricultural pursuits, including a goodly representation from different sections of Charleston County. The preliminary meetings that had been held had proved the necessity of some permanent organization that would include plauters and farmers from the whole county, aud the ntmost harmony prevailed. On motion, Mr. Waa. M. Lawton, Sr., was called to the chair, and briefly thanked the meeting for the honor they bad conferred on him. The committees that bad been appointed to make nominations and frame a constitution and by-luws, then made their reports, which were ac? cepted. The Committee on Nominations stated that thc presidency of thc society had been ten? dered to the Hon. J^io. Townsend, but he had de? clinen the position, and the choice of thc commit? tee was then centred upon the Hon. Charles Mac? beth. On motion, a committee of three were ap? pointed to walt on that gentleman and conduct him to the chair. During their absence, a recess of fifteen minutes was taken, and the society, at the invitation of Dr. Passmore, repaired to the office of Mr. F. G. Cart, on South Atlantic wharf, where the process of making sugar from the sorghum cane was practically Illustrated. Dr. Passmore has devoted himself to the development of this particular branch of agriculture, and was enabled lo give thc members of the society much valuable information on the subject. On the return of the society to their place of meeting, the special committee reported that they were unable to find Mr. Macbeth, and Mr. Lawton resumed thc chair. The constitution ami by-laws were then submitted and accepted with a few amendments. The former provides for the organization of thc society and thc creation or a library. Arrangements are also made for quar? terly lectures by distinguished gentlemen, on subjects that would interest and Instruct the members. A committee of three, consisting of Messrs. N. M. Porter, W. G. Varden and Dr. A. B. Rose, were appointed to confer with thc agents of thc steamboat lines between Charleston and the Northern port.s and effect some reduction on the present exorbitant tarin" of freight charges. Mr. Lawton was asked to vacate the chair, and Mr. Lockwood A. McCants, appointed temporary chairman, while the thanks or thc society were tendered to Mr. Lawton for the manner in which he had presided. The thanks of thc meeting were also tendered Messrs. Walker, Evans k Cogswell' for the use or thc room. The next regular meet? ing was fixed for the second Thursday in Febru? ary, to be held at the same place. A nucleus of a library was started by a donation from the Courier otllce of a bound volume of Moore's Rural New Yorker, and a copy of the report of the United States Agricultural Bureau for 1S6S. All books, magazines or agricultural journals de? signed for the society should be sent to the care of Mr. Jacques, thc editor of the Rural Carolinian, who has consented to take charge of such dona? tions. The meeting was largely attended by planters from the islands and upper portion of thc county," but the most pleasing feature was thepromiuence given to thc small farmers, and the In tere.-1 takeu In what ls called track gardening. This class have heretofore been comparatively Ignored aud overshadowed by the large planters, bat the pre? sent society is organized on a*broad platform, that makes no distinction on account of the number of acres planted. About seventy-five names were enrolled, and the society fully organized by the election or the following o niters and committees: Hon. Charles Macbeth, president; W. G. Varden, Hon. S. W. Barker, W.
