The total loss will be about $4000. -? ST. JOHN'S DAT.-Monday next will be the festival or St. John the Evangelist, a day usually celebrated with great pomp and display by the Masonic Fraternity. Thc Lodge at Klngstree, S. C., will unite In a procession and proceed to the church, where a public Installation of the off! eera elect will be made, and an address delivered by P. M. N. Levin, of Friendship Lodge, No. t>, of this city, on the "Principles and Practice of the M/stlc Art." GOOD TRIP.-Thc brig Mary M. Francis, from this port for Havre, arrived there December 15, ' after an excellent run of twenty-five days. She was laden here by Messrs. Wm. Roach A Co. The prevalence of good winds has caused most of Che European bound ships from this port to make fair passages, and the bark A. B. Wyman, already . reported, reached Liverpool in twenty-eight days, and the barks Jerome Jones and Ju venta have also arrived out. THE ACADEMY OF MUSIC-"The Streets of Mew York" drew a fine audience last night. The piece depends for its success more upon enco? ure scenery and local hits than upon the intrinsic merit of its plot or dialogue; but it was produced In a manner that could not fall to delight an au dience. Some of thc effects were applauded to the echo. We ore (lad to see how rapidly the scenic resources of the Academy are being multi piled under Manager Ford's active and careful management. "Thc Streets of Kew York'' will be repeated on Saturday night. MASONIC ELECTION.-At the annual commit nicatldn of Salem Lodge, No. 141, A. F. M., held ?at-MayeavUle, Snmter District, S. C., on the 14th instant, the following officers were elected to serve for thc ensuing Masonic year: Worshipful GL L. Warren, Master; Brothers J. Harvey Wilson, S. W. ; Jas. E. Atkins, G. W.; Wm. Q. Muid row, treasurer; Hugh H. Wilson, secretary; H. Dick? son Corbett, (P. M.,) S. D.; BenJ. F. Wilson, J. D.; Jnnltu A. Mayes and C. K. Weatherford, stewards; J. B. Trimnali tyler. A Past Master's jewel was vo? ted to Worshipful H. Dickson Corbett, the retiring master. CRUMBS.-The German Friendly Society gave a "Christmas blowout" in the shape of a mam? moth bowl of egg-nogg at their last meeting. The "Major," who made bia debut on the Acad ?my boards last night, was the observed c. all observers during the morning, and hts martial bearing was never more conspicuous. The gay masqueraders, who were wont to per? ambulate the city at this festive season, are noti? fied ora fulmination from the Chief of Police re? quiring them to unmask while in the streets. Who's afraid r INTERESTING OCCASION.-The pupils of Mr. C. H. Bergmann'B academy, accompanied by their parents and friends, assembled at Lindsted: "s Hall yesterday afternoon, at half-past 5 o'clock, to In? augurate the Christmas holidays by an old-tlmcd Christmas frolic. Thc hall was tastefully arrang? ed for the occasion, and the Christmas tree was Ulumlnated so as to display thc numerous girts to tho boat advantage. Tbe presents and prizes, which were suspended from thc branches and clustered around the bose or the tree, were speed nyquist nbuted among thc bright-eyed throng. Several addresses were made by the pupils, and tbe evening was passed pleasantly in a round ot enjoyment. TUE CRICKET ON THE HEAKTU.-Dion Bou cieault's version of Char.es Dickens' delicious Christmas story will be played at the Academy of Muslo to-night, for the first time in Charleston. The peculiarity of this play, and lu great charm in the eyes of the lovers of Dickens' tender Christ? mas carola, is that lt gives the whole story, without the addition or taking away of a single Incident. Usually a romaneo when put on the stage la so hacked and distorted as to be difficult of recognition, and lt was the excep? tional merit of Mr. Boucicault's dramatization or g "The Cricket ou the Hearth"' which led Joseph Jefferson^ he famous comedian, to say that lt was the most admirable adaptation with which he was acquainted. The company now at thc Academy or Music played the Cricket on the Hearth at Savannah, and tn a way to draw from Mrs. Hoer, one of the brightest stars in the dramatic firmament, the encomium that the performance would do credit to any theatre in the country. UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT-COLUMBIA, DICEMBEX22-HON. U.S. BRYAN, PRESIDING.-EX parte Antonio J. Gonzales, of Charleston. Beti tlon for final discharge. M. P. O'Connor pro pet. Referred to C. G. Jaeger, Esq, registrar, and final hearing ordered to take place before thc court at Charleston, on the nth of January next. Ex parte J. H. Lee, of Marlboro. Ex parte John M. Waddell. Ex parte Henry S. Crabb, of Marl? boro. Petitions for final discharge, c. P. Town? send pro pet. Registrar's report tn riivor of dis? charge read and continued, and on motion, the Judge 8lgued, under seal, dual order and certifi? cate of discharge. CIRCUIT COURT. The court renewed i he consideration or the case or Boy ktu vs. Germania Insurance Company et al. The court, on motion, ordered that the special pleas be set aside. Tins was arter hearing full argument. The court also reruaed to grant mo? tion that plaintiff give security tor costs, and that Ute case be suspended unlit security be given. The court then proceeded to hear testimony in the case until a late hour at night, and adjourned without closing testimony. SOCIAL EQUALITY.-Our sapient legislators, who are so anxious to give their colored constitu? ents the power to thrust themselves wherever they are not wanted, might learn a lesson from the test caso made some months ago In Washing? ton as to the right of colored persons to enter places of amusement. This case was carried to the Supreme Court, where lt ls now pending. The point cf the Joke Ls, that Wormlcy, the oolored man cho mano thc demand Tor admission to the National Theatre, ls the son or Worraley, the fa? mous oolored caterer, who will not allow a colored person to be served In his restaurant at any price. Now it seera3 to the Washingtonians, as it seems to us, that the colored people should themselves desist from discriminating against their own color in barber shops and restaurants, before they attempt to prevent the whites from managing their own business in their own way. The truth or the matter ls, that the proprietor or a house of business, white or colored, is the only groper person to decide who he will and who he wlU not serve, and this ls, we believe, thc opinion of aU tho colored people who take the trouble to think about this huge question of "social equali? ty," BO-callod. TUB RSV. L. II. SHUCK.-Thc following let? ter from Mr. Shuck, now pastor of the First Bap? tist Church, to the ladies of Barnwell, is published in thc Journal: Mrs. James Brown, Mrs. J. A. Duncan, and Others : I have Just received thc valuable present from thc female members of my church, and I hasten to express to the generous donors my high ap? preciation of thc gift, suggested, I know, by thc warm affection which they cherish for their pas? tor. The oainiul separation, which sonders the tiea hitherto existing between mc and my much loved church, ls felt most keenly by mc, but you all may be assured that, although called to labor In another field, my affection for you will still continue. Indeed, I did not know how much I was beloved, or how much I loved my dear church, until the trying scenes of yesterday transpired. I hope, in the t rovldence of God, that I may be able to revisit Barnwell and renew the delightful associations of thc past. May I still ask a place in your warm sympathies and Christian regards, and when we have passed through this vale of tears may we meet In that blessed home above, where adieus are never 6poken and partings are unknown. May God bless you, my dear friends, ls the fervent prayer of your late but ever affec? tionate pastor, L. H. SHUCK. SHREDS OF STATE NEWS.-The Sumter Mon? umental Fair opened on Monday. It is the grand? est affair of the kind that Sumter has seen. The Edgefleld Advertiser says : Richard Realf, the "Englishman,'' carpet-bagger, John Brown raider, and United States Internal Revenue Asses? sor for Edgefleld. has resigned his office as as? sessor, and gone the way "Ward's geese" went. TuO "poor girl," the "simple Irishman," the wife of the said Realf, is still in our midst, and is apparently master of the situation. Mr. J. Ward Hey ward, late of thc constabulary force, bas been appointed postmaster at Edge? fleld Courthouse. Mr. Joel Curry, a native and up to a few years ago a resident in the Curryton section, of Edgc Beld County, died of apolexy on Saturday, the nth instant, at his residence In Decatur County, Georgia. Two negro men. Riley Capers and James Ca? pers, have been lodged in Edgefleld jail for thc Killing of a third negro man, named Duncan Ken lerly. The latter was so cut and stabbed, that loath ensued. This happened at Mr. Stanmore (Vatson's, on the Ridge, ou Saturday, the 18tu in itant. Lewis Berry and wife, John Slnglcy and Steve tferchant, all colored, who have been arrested by he civil authorities, confess to having perpetrated ihe murder of Mr. Dunwoody, of Newberry. Thc vife of Berry went to the depot after the murder vas Committed, and she and Singley watched, me on either side of the building, while thc others >ored Into and entered. No one else, os we learn, las been Implicated in this confession, and the mbllc mind may therefore be at rest so far os he knowledge of who the assassins are. j? Hotel Arrivals-December ?34.
