DISASTROUS CORLISION AT SEA.-The Savan? nah papers bring ns accounts of thc collision at sea between thc British ship Golconda and the American brig Annie E. Carver, which caused thc abandonment of thc latter. The Golconda was bound from New Orleans to Liverpool with a car? go of cotton, sailing or? thc first instant. Thc caaae. of the occurence was purely thc neglect on ' the part of the captain of thc brig In not obeying thc rules of tuc road at sea. The brig's boat the only one she had-was saved and brought to Savannah. The brig A. E. Carver, Captain Sylves? ter, was bound from Cardenas to St. Mary's Ga., in ballast, and had a crew consisting of thc . mate and six hands. There were also two ladles on board, all of whom were brought to Savan? nah by the Golconda. The brig was owned by IL W. Bracket, Seth W. Wyman and others of, Maine, and was partially insured. She was two hundred and seventy-three tons burthen. Tun REY. L. H. SHUCK.-This gentleman, who has accepted a call to the pastorate of thc First Baptist Church of Charleston, took leave of his brethren in Barnwell on Sunday last. We learn from the Barnwell Journal that large con? gregations were present both In the morning aud at night, and at the conclnsion of thc farewell dis? course at night, Mr. Shuck extended the parting ' hand to his flock and to his numerous friends who were assembled. It was truly aa affecting scene, and tears were seen In almost every eye. Jt was tonching tb sec the Immense crowds of colored people who thronged the galleries, and ' who testified by their expressions of sympathy their deep interest in the painful separation. Thc i Journal says : "The Kev. Mr. Shuck has enjoyed ? for many years the confidence and love of I his church, and of thc community, and he will I hardly lind greater regard and warmer affection I in any other field or labor. He will bc followed to his Charleston home with the best wishes or 1 the members of his late charge, who will rejoice in his future usefulness and happiness." A-beautiful silver goblet was presented to Mr. ; ShudS" by the ladles of his church, as a token of 1 their love and esteem, and a silver cup was prc- i sent ed to thc same gentleman by his colored ' friends. i Mr. Shuck delivered his first sermon to his new ' charge yesterday morning, from Exodus, l"th i chapter, 11th verse. The church was well at? tended, and the services were of aa impressive l nature. ^ I Hotel Arrival?-December IS and VJ, CHARLESTON HOTEL. P. A. Clarry, Mrs. F. A. Clarry and two chil- ? dren, W. 0. A NEW SUNDAY SCHEDULE ON THE C RAILWAY.-Hie City Railway Company have fected a change in the Sunday trips of thc< that will he a great benefit to the travelling1 r lie. Hereafter the cars on both lines will mi regularly as during thc week, and it will bc lei the option of the regular conductors to i?matll duty or to employ Cte aervioaa of thc extra c ductors, whose a limber lins been increased. The trips from thc Academy of Music c night are considered as extra, and the conduct and drivers ol'those cars get increased pay their services. ROSEDALE.-Tho drama of ..Rosedale ur Hides' Ball," will bc played, for thc first time Charleston, at thc Academy of Music to-nip When brought out at WaUack's Theatre, in S York, '-Rosedale*' had an uninterrupted rut three hundred performances, anil it ls still cou cd on a3 sure to draw a full house. Thc play not a "sensational'' one in the common sensi the word, but is well calculated to display abilities of thc players, and abounds instrik and effective situations. Thc plot is-both sim and ingenious, its main points being taken fr a well-known English novel. The principal parts in "'Rosedale" wilt be pla by Miss Laura Alexander, Miss Eldridge andi Oneil-a host in themselves. Thc play has bi for some time iu preparation^, aud will bc ] upon the beards in Metropolitan siyic. . CRUMBS.-Thc arrest of every Northern vi tor by the detectives ou the supposition* or bel drummers, ls not only annoying to fhc victims this harsh treatment, but has caused ma strangers to avoid Charleston in thejr Southe tour. J. .Wright, colored, luis andi t Danville, Ya., Railroad Company for $10,( damages, and the case will bc heard before Jud Underwood, in Richmond, on thc 8th of Januai Tlie Hope Fire Engine Company have rcceiv a new steamer from thc North, it is a superi machine and will compare favorably with tho now In thc department. "Shoo Fly'' is the comic song of the period, at has travelled from Yankeeland to thc Rio Gram: A man named Peter Riley gave himself up < Friday night at the Guardhouse, under the se accusation of having stolen one hundred dolla from Robert Munnell, a resident of Indiana. Tl whole affair is believed to be a ruse on thc part Riley to obtain transportation to Indiana, rro which State be hails. He was sent to thc Wor house as a vagrant. A pugilistic encounter on Saturday prove damaging to thc countenance of one of thc eli fathers. Ex-Alderman T. J. Mackey has returned fro: Washington, aud will open his magistrate's oflli to-day on Broad street, one door west or tl Guardhouse. Miss Laura Alexander, of Ford's Comedy Con pany, is at thc Charleston Hotel. .The rest of II Company arc staying at the Pavilion. Tlie engagement of the Chapman Sisters close with two very successful performances on Satu day, and thc company departed yesterday mon lng for Sarannah, where they open to-night. No PHOSPHATE MoxoroLY-TUE SENT?MES OF THE PUBLIC ON THE PROPOSED BILL.-Dnrin; the last few days the principal topic of conversa Hon In Charleston business circles has been wha ls called thc " Phosphate bill," now berore the Leg lslaturc, which proposes raTMvc to certain privl leged capitalists the cxclusiv^lght to minc phos phates in the beds of thc navigable rivers au< streams of the State. As soon as'thc bill became known, there was i buzz of indignation. Thc Brat question askei was: How the thing had been kept so quiet ? Tc this thc usual reply was that money was spem freely in Columbia to lobby the hill through; that Corbin was promised a fee of $10,000, and thai bribes had been ottered the correspondents or tin city papers to Induce them to keep their mouths shut. Of course the las: part or the plan worked badly. Correspondents did make thc bill public In time, and In Charleston and Columbia the press opened Ure upon the would-be monopolists. As carly as Thursday lt was evident that stren? uous offorts would bc made to defeat the bill, and when, on Saturday, the statement was made iii I K K NEWS that the bill would most probably pass, the anti-monopolists set to work at once to make their hostility tell. Ry noon thc walls were deco? rated willi auti-m'?nopoly posters. Hy thc sldeof thc flaming announcements of '.Rosedale," and the lading glories or Pluto's balloon, were sharp? ly written appeals to the colored people to rally against "the phosphate-grabbing monopolists."' The people were Invited to assemble In mass meeting at night, and a memorial, of which thc following ls a copy, was left for signature at vari? ous public places: To the Honorable the Kember* of the Senate and Bouse ofiijpreseatatires of (he suite of south. Carolina: Thr. uauersigncd citizen^ of South Carolina pray yonr honorable bodies that you will not pass the bill now pending before you," "To grant lo certain persons therein named thc exclusive right to dig and mine in the beds of the naviga? ble streams and waters of thc State for phosphate rocks and phosphate deposits,'' Tor thc rollowing among other reasons: First. Because lt grauts a monnpolv of a privi? lege which may be worth millions of dollars to a small number of rich capitalists; and monopolies are, and always have been, odious. Second. Because this bill will deprive a very large number or poor men, (white and colored,) ur a meaus or honest livelihood, which they now derive from digging these phosphines from the rivers, as they arc entitled by law to do. And some of those who arc now asking for this mo? nopoly have been ia the habit or buying these phosphates Trom these poor men. Tiiird. Uecanse this bill will Injure those citizens ot Hus .State, and irom other Stales, who have invested large capital lu machinery and works for digging phosphates, and will transfer their prollrs to a small "ring" of capitalists, who do not propose to give anything for lt but20or40 cents n ton. Fourth. Because every man, woman and child In the State, white and black, are directly inter? ested that the immense revenue which may be derived from this unexpected source shall go Into the treasury or the State, and thereby lessen the taxes and pay thc debt or the Stale; and not go to enrich those who have done nothing to en? title them to it. Firth. Because the poor fishermen and owners of small boats also dig this phosphate, can afford to pay thc State more for this privilege or digging than thc large capitalist can, and thus give a greater revenue to thc State than can bc derived rrom thc monopolists, and yet carn an honest living, ol which they will bc deprived bv this bill. Sixth. Because thc Legislature cannot taKe away thal which belongs alike to all dibeen* er the United states, and give it to a small company ot merchants. And vour petitioners will ever pray and so ron h. The call for thc miciing was addressed to thc colored people, and here ls one of thc peculiar features of the who:? affair. White and black, Radical and Democrat, alike condemn thc Phos? phate hill as ajob which must be exposed, and, ia righting the bil!, there is no distinction of race, color or party. Thc brier notice given of the proposed meeting prevented a large assemblage at thc Military Hall on Saturday night, and after an Interchange of views it was decided by those present to call a mass meeting to night, when tho phosphate-dig? ging monopoly eonld jje discussed in all ita bear? ings. Thc question has excited considerable interest not only In this community, but among the re?i Jentsofthc phosphate sections, many of whom dave supported themselves by the sale of phos? phate rock taken from thc bed of thc rivers. A large order tor flat boats has been given to a prominent builder of this city to be used for river phosphate digging, and Mr. Angus Smith, a prom? inent diver of this city, has invented a dredge to ie used solely for this purpose. The meeting to? night will doubtless bc largely attended, and the opponents or tho phosphate monopoly win bring .heir heaviest batteries to bear unga tao propos*. #?11. 1 lili ARRS9T OF COTTON THIEVES.-Samuel Sparks, Harrison Mcl'earce and Sandy Luke, all colored, were brought to thc city, on Saturday, by OtlicerTruall, charged with breaking open the (Tin-house or Mr. Bacot, at Darlington, and ap? propriating the contents. They have been lodged In thc detective ofllec until their commitment to jail._ KMASCIPATUIX.-Mr. Whlltcniore, who rep? resents the colored people or South Carolina in thc Federal Mouse or Representatives, offered a join! resolution, on Thursday last, appropriating flSO.OOC to enable the Secretary ortho Interior to contract with Fisk Mills ror a gro-.p of statuary In marble Tor thc South wing or the capitol, so that the building may be completed by 1875. [The group proposed is a match piece to thc " Progress of Civilization," now ff-ion the pediment ortho ncrt'i wing, to "embody thc great Maturo or emancipation and fix In an Imperlshab' Torin the 'Act' whereby 4,000,000 bondmen were made free.''] Referred to thc Committee on Public Ihiil lings and Grounds.
