The enterprise of Itatlicnlism is equal to any undertaking; but it cannot accomplish impossibilities. Its greed is insatiable; but it cannot suck blood out of n stone. They hove squeezed the orange until lt is nearly dry. Wc aro glad to sec that this conviction begins to prcvuil nt the State Capital, ?iud to such an extent that the Legislature is about to repeal one of. the most infamous meas? ures of intrigue and corruption -which has yet secured the suffrages of that body. As a matter of policy, the township redis? tribution of thc State was a masterpiece of legerdemain. True it was unsuited to thc wants of an agriculture necessitating large ileitis nnd sparse settlements. There nrc hundreds of square miles in our State which have boen swayed, from time immemorial by the squirrel, thc possum and the raccoon. There aro thousands ofiicrcs possessed by two or throe families. There are hundreds of thoiUUllds of pine barrens where a prudent gopher would decline to settle. Yet the ex Isting law requires that all these interesting museums of natural history should bo erect? ed with townships, that each township should have seven ofllcers, and thut these officer* in each township should receive for their services about fifteen hundred and seventy-five dollars per annum. This is why thc securities of n State, like South Carolina, controlled by thieving demagogues and ignorant neg roos, cannot nnd will not be forced up to the neighborhood of par. And this little cm barrnssnicnt is doubtless very dispiriting lo the rascals who filled their pockets with State bonds ami now desire to dispose of Ihcm at a largo profit; but it does not sur? prise or grieve thc ncuto business manor I he permanent investor Wc cnn pay our debt, ns it stnnds. The question is whether ono year moro of Radi? cal rule will not so largely swell the total thal thc people will, nt the first opportunity, Khufllo oCf tho weight of care and repud?ale every dollar of debt .contracted after thc war. Under these circumstances, Scott, Kimp ton & Co. are not likely to make much by Iheir last desperate endeavor to speculate in South Carolina securities. Their proposal to pay thc interest and principal of the debt in specie may become a law, but what then? It will at once impose upon tho people nn extra lax equal to thc premium on the spe? cie paid out by thc State; nnd for this extra lax there will bo no compensation. The pro fi Ls will go into thc capacious pouch of tho Radical ring; the loss will full on tho people. South Carolina is paying ber debts in the mu io ital currency. The money which is in ail o a legal tender for "all debts, public "and private", is what South Carolina gives to lier creditors. We did not make the law ; and when tho State pays in currency thc interest and principal of her obligations, she does all that can be, and is, expected of her, cither on legal or on moral grounds. I Iud tho Governor advised that tho war debt bo paid-a debt contracted for the advancement of a cause in which our peo? ple embarked fortune, life and honor-an attentive car and willing heart would have mel Hie proposal, and tho whole subject would have been considered with kindly anti generous care.
