Ita assets had been invested in State and public securi ties, in shares of the great corporations of the country, and In discounted paper, and these were ull affected by tiio common ruin. McKay, our late presi dent, to whose oHidenl, mnnngomcnt the bank bad, in a large measure, been indebted for its lormor prosperity, came to this city, and be gan at onco to examine ihe wrcok and to see what could bo isavod. 'I be bills In circulation, which hod been reduced during the ilr.-l lew mouths of the war to Iho small sum comparatively of $100,000, had been increased by the call or the Confederate Government lo. the large sum of | $000,000. These bills were scattered over every part of the country, and soon became the object ut large and eager speculation. They rose rapid ly in value, were brought forward constantly, and daily presented for redemption, and as tills, in the depressed condition of the bank, was Impossible, suits were threatened, and every means used to force a settlement. In the menu!line the board, exercising a rigid economy, had reduced the expenses of | tho bank to the lowest possible limit. Only three ofllcers?Hie president, cashier and soli citor?were kept on duty, and the salaries were largely diminished. The assets were nursed, every opportunity for the purchase or| the bills at the lowest rates was embraced, and soon a marked diminution in the out Blandlng circulation was effected. They com manded high rates in Ihe market, and their advance in price was much greater than shown in the bonds and stocks which formed so large n part of our assois.' Sensible of this, and satisfied thai, although our stocks would ultimately bring very high prices, yet a sale of them at that time would Involve a ruinous sacrifice, und possibly bring on the insolvency of the bank, Iho board con ceived tho project of Helling the real estate owned by the Imuk. This, after great delibe ration and fall discussion, and after many and Tree conferences with Ihe solicitor of Iho bunk, wus effected for $l?,000 cash, and tho proceeds at. once Invested in our h?ls, ut a large dis count. Soon alter this agreement for sale was made, which, however, was without any notice to the public that lids stock whs in market for sale, Mr. Townsend and Mr. Brldgers, (the latter ns agent of Messrs. Walters ft Newcomor,) called upon the officers of this company, and desired to kuow whether tho proper transfer of this ? <ek would be made upon thu booka of this Company.
