The free usc which the Governor, throughout thc message, makes of tho artful appeals of the demagogue, will thoroughly disgust the decent people of the State, and must detract from the credit which he might otherwise have obtainer] for such of his recommendations as are in themselves pro; er and expedient. It will, perhaps, amnse our reader? to learn the pains taken by Governor Scott to embarrass Trra NEWS in tho early publica? tion of the message. The New York Sun is a very spicy, read? able and enterprising paper, but it has one fault, Like our staid, venerable and respected neighbor, The Courier, which yesterday edi? torially assured its readers that thc message of Governor Scott had been sent on Tuesday to the Legislature, when in fact it had only been slyly given to The Courier's reporter, and the Legislature knew nothing abott it, The S?n will occasionally chronicle events as they ought to have been, instead of as they actually were. Witness the following intelligence which Tne Sun prints as coming from our own Palmetto State: "A colored lawyer, in South Carolina, hav? ing horsewhipped a white member of the State Government for Insulting his wife, the Legis? lature appointed an investigating ?ommittee. The committee report that 'the flogging was thoroughly and handsomely done.'" Now, after all, it is an open question whether this bit of news ought not to be credited to The Sun, as a special stroko of enterprise.
