Tan NEWCOMB MINSTRKLS open to-night at jSibernlan Hall. The troupe has an ancient and well earned reputation for excellence In the vari? ais elementa which make up the style or enf ertain ment known as burnt-cork opera. As concerts of this character never fail to draw good houses in Charleston, we have en ly to advise our readers to go early In order to secure good seats. OFF FOR COLUMBIA .'-The hegira o? Radical atUce-holders and office-seekers, who dance at? tendance upon our model Legislature at Colum? bia, has begun, rad there ls a fair prospect that hy to-night few of the tribe will remain in Charles? ton. The multitudinous officials who rejoice in the name of D. T. Corbin have all departed, to return no doubt, at the close of the session, ia multiplied numbers and with augmented civic honors. THB COTTON CROP IX NORTH CAROLINA. The Wilmington Journal says: "We have before referred to the probable short crop of cotton in this State, and we regret extremely to learn, from -asource In which we have confidence, that the crop of Robeson County will only yield about -ane-hah* of what it was pitched for. The late cotton is opening badly, a..d the rot ls very per? ceptible, and adds greatly to the shortness and quality of the orop." TH? WORKINGMEH'S ASSOCIATION.-The Com? mittees of three from each of the * ;s who were appointed by the chairman (Mr. Jai ?es M. Rabb,) met on Saturday evening, at thc ^outh Carolina Mall, and presented a draft of the constitution, which was accepted. The meeting was private, hat, wc are sincerely glad to hear, that the asso? ciation has purged Itself af the political element that was manipulating it. A public meeting of Hie workingmen will be called at an early day. A MOBIL ESTABLISHMENT.-We invite the at? tention of the friends of THE NEWS hi the city and throughout the State to the excellent faculties which our office enjoys for the prompt execution ot all kinds of Book and Job Printing. Fahy pro Tided with new type and machinery of the latest -sad most approved pattern, and having a large and carefully selected stock of cards, envelopes and papers of all qualities, THE NEWS Job Office bi now prepared to flu orders for every description of plain and ornamental printing In the very best manner, and at rates at least as low as any other establishment in the Southern States. Call at THE NEWS building (up-stalrs) and examine our -seale of prices and specimens of our work. STETS DORES' PROTECTIVE UNION.-The steve? dores of this city, following the example set by the longshoremen, have formed a union to pro? tect their Interests and those of th? shippers. They have pledged themselves to the Utter that tte work shall be done thoroughly and exped? tlouaty, and without the aid of men who have made themselves obnoxious by their dictatorial proceedings. The shippers, we are told, will ac? cord the new organization then* entire support. The first meeting of this union was held on Fri? day evening, and was presided over by Captain A. 0. Stone. The constitution was read and adopted, and arrangements made to perfect the workings of the Union. A special meeting will he held this evening at the hall of the Hook an? Ladder Company, No. 1, in Queen street. THE AOADEMT OF MOSTO.-Mr. John T. Ford, the enterprising lessee of our little Jewel of a theatre, arrived in the city on Saturday, and ex? pressed his unqualified gratification at the ar? rangement, capacity and adornment ot the new temple of music and the drama to be inaugurated ander his auspices. Mr. Ford assures us that he means at all hazards to maintain the social char? acter of the Academy, both before and behind the footlights. The entertainments that he Intends to present will, in all cases, be the very best of their class, and at once pleasing and refined. The Chapman Sisters, tue stars who are to open the Academy, have won golden opinions when? ever they have appeared, and we are sure that our people will be delighted by then* sparkling and vivacious performances Mr. Ford has secured for thb opening night a prologue specially written for the occasion by Wm. Gilmore Simms, Esq. The finishing touches ate now being put to the ornamental work of the Academy, and by the middle of this week lt is ex? pected that the structure will be substantially ?amp?ete. The gorgeous "sunlight" which is to illuminate the Interior has been elevated to Its position m the dome, and the complicated details of the scenic arrangements are rapidly approach? ing perfection. Our friends in the country who may chance to .visit Charleston in December, or in fact any time this winter, need have no fear that first class amusements will be lacking to make their even? ings^ the city pass pleasantly away. THE MASONIC FAIR.-Saturday night ended tte first week of the Fair, and the hall having been previously engaged by the minstrels, thc managers were reluctantly compelled to suspend operations. A number of articles are still on hand, and the chances arc not all taken In several af the most Important raffles. It is, therefore, proposed to obtain the lower hall aad exhibit the ansold goods on one large stand. It would not ae difficult to secure takers for tho remaining chances, and the articles still on hand would com? mand a ready sale when oiTered at the low rates proposed. The Fair has been a complete success, and the receipts will fully equal the expectations af the Masonic fraternity. The fine sliver service, af which mention was made in our last Issue, was won by Orange Lodge, which polled 204 votes, the remainder of thc ballot being: Washington 145; Union Kilwinning 99-(being one for each mem? ber;) Friendship 38, and a number scattering The fine set of narness put up by strict Observ? ance Lodge was won by Dr. J. Somers Daist. A cooking stove presented by Mr. Q. A. Damon was won by Mr. W. B. Hughes. The handsome garnet act was not rallied, and each table has some choice articles remaining that will be raffled as soon as the chances arc all taken. It wul be seen by a notice in another column that the Committee on Accounts will meet at Hibernian Hali to-morrow attcrnoon, when aU alaims should be presented properly certified, and jrh*en all persons engaged in the Fair are re quested to hand la their accounts. The president ?(theFair Association particularly requests ail persons who may have articles remaining at the ?alt to remove them aa eaxry as possible thia (Monday) morning. CKUMBS.-It was carre ntl j reported on tho streets Saturday that thc Grand Jury had lound a true bill against ex-Alderman T. J. Mackey, for assault and battery with intent to kill. A meeting of the Union Republican party will bc held this evening at the Military nail. A grand pow-wow ls expected. The new Cooring in the upper wards market is nearly completed. The investigation into the East Bay Are failed to discover the cause. That of the lire in Calhoun stree*, is stHI pending, though the testimony elicit ed thus far Induces thc belief that it was the act of an incendiary. A SERIOUS MISHAP.-Some excitement was caused on Meeting street on Saturday morning by thc appearance of fissures in tho front of the new building occupied by Messrs. Cameron, Barkley A Co., at the corner of Meeting and Cum? berland streets, and for a time there were fears that the wall would fail. The facts of thc case, which our reporter has been at some trouble to ascertain, wer as follows: Thc owners of the building wishing to deepen their cellar, with a view to meet thc wants of their growing busi? ness, employed Mr. Culleton, a contractor, to do the work. Ile had made very fair progress in what he had undertaken, the side walls having been successfully underpinned by brick work some three feet below their original depth, and the sandy soil removed from the interior of the oellar to a corresponding extent. Coming to the front, however, the fatal mistake was made of# undermining the entire width of thc structure, leaving thc immense mass of masonry of the Trout wall hanging from thc two corners. Thc front, which is about forty feet wide, stood this tearful test for some time, and then gradually yielded, thc masonry below the iron sills sinking Into tho cavity below. Then was presented thc singular spectacle of the powerful iron calumns, designed by the architect to support the wal!, themselves supported solely by the bond of brick and mortar above them, actiug like an immense arch. As soon as this state of affairs became apparent a large crowd collected around the building, and a messenger was dispatched by the distressed owners for Mr. John ll. Devereux, at the Academy of Music. With characteristic promptitude that gentleman speedily had a gang of workmen at hand, with a quantity of lumber of all sizes, to remedy, as far as possible, thc accident. He soon .succeeded in gripping, by a system of shoreing, the entire trent, not allowing another brick to fall, thus affording the owners an oppor? tunity of removing their valuable stock from the paru of the building endangered. We presume that the operations necessary to repair the dam? age will be continued to-day, Messrs. Cameron, Barkley A Co. meantime giving notice that the business of their establishment will be conducted through the rear entrance. Hotel Arri vu!?-November 20 and 31. CHARLESTON HOTEL. Mrs. J.
