While i huvc ever been the friend of thu workingman uu<l mechanic, ll. lu evidently In had taste Tor any par? ticular elura lu a community to array Itself against ud others; and while I fully appreciate thc compliment len tiered me by my comrades of thc uris, 1 must feel that I am eipiully indebted to many warm friends in almost every class of our (-'immunity for tho high honor conferred upon mc, In being selected to represent them lu so hon? orable a body ns our Senate of 1W!0; and I would further say thal it ia my opinion that any one who* would consider thc Interest of but ono class of hts community in auch a piuco, la unworthy of thc position to which they hud elevated him. .So far ns the organization of our Industrial classes Into societies, for their mutual protection, bcncllt and elevation, la concerned, thia is bul. right ?ind proper, and eminently a. move in thc right direction; bul when they do this ut thc ex? penso of all other classes, and with ii view lo compel a larger support than competition will wurrum, then have they lost sight of the high ulm for which they set out, und no movement can succeed which expects to build up one InlC'st at thc expense of pulling down another cqu , en? titled to support, lu my humble JUdgU ' this ls nut a time for exciting discord between em? ployers and employees, and If our sensible work? ing men will look the matter rightly in the face, tiley will find thal lt is not thc disposition of those who arc now ainu ding them a placo fur earning tx support tn oppress and grind them; but that tbc want of u belier support is lo bo laid ut thc door of our common misfortunes. Thc Ruler of our destinies hus tried us In a scathing furnace, and those who arc worthy will como out brighter for thc trial; but let no man think bc has dono a worthy act, when, nombiuiug lo help his fellow? man, ho force, another to pay thc coats of his be? nevolence. A glance ul the condition of our community ls sulllclciil to show that I he present auffcring of our working classes Ls not thu result of u disposition on thc part of employers to oppress their em? ployees; for if this waa thc case then thc Urst class would bc enjoying thc luxuries of wealth, while the latter would be enduring even severer trials than what ia now their lot. Can you who look back to days of plenty without taxation now expect to enjoy those halcyon days In tho midst of repeated loss of crops, which have always re? warded you in post years with employment, com? petence and comfort]? Can you expect thc ?ame results with fields stripped by caterpillar and drought? I bear you'answer, no I Then do not blame yonr fellow-man, nor on All-wise Provi? dence; neither act yourselves up against either, but, accepting thc situation like men, let us all determine to uphold one another, lill Cod's bless? ing ahull nt lust reward our endurance, and give us once more plenteous liai vests, und overruling the present tyranny, relieve us from these taxa? tions which ure grinding our city and State to the dust.
