They hail been 1 awaiting the venerable Kentucftan lor a week past, nntl anticipated great Illings from Ihe speech he would innku In favor of the measure which called the convention together. 'i?A singular document appears in the Toledo papers of Saturday. Il is a card from Conrad Meier, the condemned murderer, offering to exhibit himself for (ho benefit of his wife, who has lately become a mother. II? says : "On Monday and Thursday I shall be happy to sec and bon verse with any one who is willing to .'testify his or her sympathy by contributing, however small, toward the support of my poor, heartbroken wife and her Infant. I am com pelled tri ask that the public will not take of fence at this appeal. My own fate I shall try to meet wllli becoming fortitude, but, oh ! it Is anguish to think that the wife and child whom I love so well will soon be pointed at with scorn as Ihe wife and sou of tt murderer." ?Rev. Mr. Spiirgeon, the well-known llap ofist preacher, used to be famous for his comic .^rroon's and lectures; but increasing years and corpulency and it wife aud children have a ; little sobered him. The other day, however, be came out in his old character. He deliv ered a lecture on bells, ami provided himself witlua largo collection of different kinds of bells to Illustrate his subject. Among others, tjiero was a large alarm bell fixed In the roof, which the reverend Joker frequently pulled. Mere 1b ono of his points : "The ringing of a bell was shown to Im a striking emblem of prayer, tho rope being pulled on carlh, and the bell ringing high up In Heaven. It was to be regretted that some people pulled the rope so gently." This is tlui way to Instil exalted ideas of religions truths Into Hie mind. ?A New York letter of Monday says: "Fnth Hytielnt.be gave peremptory orders this morning thnt no one should be admit led |o his room. Ills visitors, yesterday, after he re turned from Mr. Becchor's church, were so nu merous that the poor man had no time even to answer Important letters which he received from Paris tho dpy before. Tho Catholics now Bay that his visit to Plymouth Church, and his interview with Becchcr, cut him off altogether , from whatever sympathy they may have felt for him before, und Dint henceforth, so far ns they are concerned, he Is as much beyond the pale Of tho Catholic Church as Bccchcr him soif. The Council. - I Wo have become ni last thorough disciples of (lie AV tuimirtiri school. With n cor rupt Governor, u venal Legislature, ami n time-serving judiciary, wo may well have Ilm City Hall a bar-room und tho Council Clumthcr a shooting saloon ! t)f wlitti con siupionco is il that ono Alderman shoots a( iiliolher when, in tho wonisof Mr. Lincoln, (bereis "nobody hurt." \t all events, il is more ilcccnt to burn powder, than tu blas ph?ma nnd steal. Tito present Mayor and Aldermen have been in olllco about six months. They fougiil and wrunglcd from November to May, and when (lui courts decided in their favor it was hoped tliitl they would have the ilccuney la fill their pockets ipiietty. Aliis! for Hin vanity of tho hopes of de cent people. The IMllshury Council lore down tho |M)rtruils or Lee and Jackson which hung on the walls of the Council Chamber, ami then, unrestrained by the memory of the tlend or the thought of the living, pitched discretion to the dogs and cursed and ravctl their Jill. Tim next move was Uta election of all (lie sons and nephews anil stop-sons of tho Aldermen ami Mayor to the city offices made vacant for them. Then came Ilm creation of new olllces to sat isfy the cravings of tho Council aud their friend.'. Still as tho Aldermen settled into thoir scats and reit the ruins of power, I hoy fell oui among themselves nml refused lo be pttcllled. Wine ami whiskey were invoked to stilltlieir angry passion?, ami Ilia hurtling liquors provided in the City Council for the comfort und delight of tho Aldermen were expected to he as oil upon I lie rngilig wniors of Ilndiculisiu. At each meeting of Council the grog-shop in the ante-room luui full swy, and on Thursday night il was intended lo celebrate tlie passage of Ihe "|K?(roluuni liill" IhJtutmpersof champagne. The cal culations of tin* thirsty Aldormcn werodo rangetl by the ruffianism of one of their body, who amused himself by shooting witli mi an army revolver at another Alderman?the County ShorilF anil his own nephew. This Alderman, who made, himself conspicuous I by Iiis cimier nnd Inaccuracy, has from the first been the most violent member of tho Hoard. It was lie who miide Council con temptible in iu.Ural meetings, nnd lie will, it is presumed, do the sumo to the last. All thnl we euro fur is to have it under stood thai Hie present Council in nowise represents tho respectable citizens of Charles ton. The Mayor and Aldermen have Ihe power to bleed Ihe city as they pleaso, and will doubl loss do it. Rut they cannot make us, ns themselves, both ridiculous and de graded. We looked fur nothing bel I it than what Ihcy have given its. And when wo cry out aguiiisl IMllshnry nnd his Alder men, we should always remember t liai a little exertion and enorgy in the elections of last November would have saved old Charleston from all this turmoil anil shnine. The Charleston stria. . Within Hie last few weeks we have had a remarkable nnd heretofore unprecedented outcropping of "strikes" in Charleston. The longshoremen, the Ship carpenters, the house painters, the tailors, and we know not what other fractional part of our lolling Immun ity, have suspended their work and tlomun iletl higher wngos. Without protOltding to enter into the merit* of the controversy, and wit bout even calling tho attention of those whom it concerna to the simple principle that ti proper workman's union is defensive and not oHbnsivo, wc must say that we think the present contlicl is most unreasonable. The strike ordinarily is the resort of Hie im poverished workman ugalnst the thriving propriotor. In the present instance it has been precipitated by knavish politicians. It is an attack by labor upon the propriotor just when he needs every favorable circum stance for the rc-eslnblislimenl of a business on which, not his support only, but that of his hands depends. So long us the world endures, we suppose, tho content between labor and eapitul must go on, and with Ihe same varying fortunes ns those, which attend the competitions of the bulls and bears of New York. The man of means will naturally endeavor to secure as largo n return for his investments and his risks nnd his losses us he can; ami the man of muscle will seek to appropriate the larg est proportional share of the profits which lie has lotted to secure. In a normal slate of society we should have no occasion to deprecate such a con HIcL We might trust in the operation of the laws of political economy, as other com munities do, for the r?gulation of wages. This interest has a method of adjusting itself, .if nut in accordance with the highest prin ciples, a*, least in such a way as contributes to the general prosperity and to the wealth of the State. The conllict is unequal, forttsiinlly the employer lias Homo means lo rail hack upon, while the workman cannot afford to re main idle for n week or n month without incur ring ihe danger of starvation. This isione of the. safeguards against tho interruption of those general and useful enterprises in which the capital of a country is invested. Butdf, as sometimes happens, the laborer triumph j and secures a larger proportion of wages than would properly and naturally .ejcrue to his work, his success invites competition among his own class. The supply soon be comes greater than the demand, and as the number of workmen increases they under bid ouch otlicr to obtain work. TIiuh capi tal recovers its lost ground, the labor-rate is resumed, und the ringleaders of the strike uro obliged lo leuvo llio country for want of employment. Such has been tho experi ence of thu English o|)erutivos. The vnri ous combinations, often tumultuous und even violent, which have sought to lix tin urli liciul seule of prices, have proved luit n more eddy u|mhi tho Itroud, deep Blrcnm of the national prosperity. In all I he depart ments of industry nn Inexorable law, llm law of supply and tleimiiiti, luis prevailed like a decree of rate. Mr. Suckle culls attention to I ho fact Hint tin- Revolution in Knghitid which culminated ttiul collapsed in tlte I'rotcctoruto of Crom well, was more of tut iiuluslriul than a po litical movement. Tlie like retiuirk may lie made in reference to tho Kreuch Itevolulion. It is u Riiggestivo circutiislnncu that euch of litest? ntiliontil labor-strikes resulted in u personal governmenl, which crippled labor and exiled liberty itself. lit Charleston n strike just now is, us wo liuve intimated, most unfortunate. As Admit Smith Ims abundantly shown, an increase of wages is absolutely dependent tt|>on, and must lm in proportion to, the increase of funds from which -he payment is to lie drawn. Where (ho revenues of si business und the slock Invested in it are limited, l he wtigos of tho hiltor employed must of neces Bily be lower than in the wealthy establish ment:! of a nourishing community. To sug gest New York prices as a standard for Churlustoii is simply proposicrotis. Wo tire just begluning to live; capital is not iihiin Uatii; the proUl- of trade are uncertain; men of tho highest Accomplishment ami char acter uro reduced lo salaries which satisfy the necessaries of life, but illlurd little more. The season is not auspicious for a strike. And if it were, nullit not Captain Sloddurd and Iiis obsequious cohorts of longshoremen pmdeiitly and modestly wait?uni il tlieir lioUcrs were served ? There were, we doubt not, exceptional cases of grievance represented in the recenl movement ?canes where wage* wen? not re muncrutivo und where tlio Industry needed .sp?cial recognition, hecauHO it. required the labor of the brain as well as the hand. Il was nh unfortunate circumstance, however, thai the mos! inferior kind of labor was I lie most clamorous in ils demands nnd the most riotous in ils demons! ml Ions; that il is a Radical Ijuuguo witli a Radical leader and a Radical ward who have presumed, in tlie name of tho laboring class, to demand the control of the wharves and shipping of Charleston. II will not take long lo settle Hiis business. (Ebncaiional.
