It is simply aa India rubber bail on each of tbe eight corners. Strange it was never thought of before. We ?an imagine the fiendish look of rage and dis? appointment wbioh passes over the counte? nance of the bag gage-em ashing porter who for the first time sees one of these contrivances. The malignant chuckle with which he used to drOp a lady's travelling trunk from his shoulder to tho floor-in full view of the agonised bat hopeless owner-is "played*oot." It ie stated that a trunk filled with books, if protected by this means, may faH from a height of twenty feet without Injury. -Some idea of the magnitude of the boole trade may be had from the daily reports ia the New York papers where the regalar annual trade sales hare been progressing for several days past. 'On this subject the Now- York Ex? press says? "The time was>-not ixt?y years ago-when the publishing houses were con? fined chiefly to a few* of the leading cities of th* seaboard-say Boston, New York sad Phil? adelphia-but now we have representative men from houses not only in Cincinnati, Chi? cago, Pittsburg and St. Louis/but Sacramen? to and SanJ^xaacisco. lt is pleasing to have increasmg proofs at these trade salee, that the public taste for trashy literature is oa the wane, and that the demand roas chiefly oa works of permanent worth. .Tba. cheap bio? graphies of the little great mea who sprang ap daring the late civil war are at a discount, while history, biography, poetry, philosophy and kindred productions are eagerly bought at remunerative puces." -A Washington letter to the Baltimore Gazette says: f'The Radicals are despairing Of the Fifteenth amendment. Governor 8en . tar's organ, th? Nashville Press and Times, is -oat ia a doable-leaded leader predicting that -the new Legislature will repeal Tennessee's ratification of the Fifteenth amendment. Be ' fore tbe final ratification of aa amendment to the Conititution of the United States by the required three-fourths, any State, which has passed- a ratification ordinance, may right? fully repeal it.. This doctrine was broadly stated in the Senate ia 1867, by Hon. Reverdy Johnson, and its correctness not denied by a single'Radical senator. The only point made, was, that after an amendment had been legally declared adopted, a State could not reverse its action. Doubtless, whenever the country sha! he restored to the sway of the constitution, the Fourteenth amendment (so called) will be ignored, together with all the reconstruction laws of Congress. This certain result is the only guarantee of the political liberties of the South-and, indeed, of the country at large. -A nsw musical instrument is oa exhibition in New York City. It is called the mslo piano, and is the work of an Italian named Caldera, - who has taken oat a patent for bis invention ia Turin. It was exhibited at tho Paris exposi? tion, where it created quite a sensation. The only difference between the melo-piano and soy ordinary piano consists in the addition of two little barnine, s, which aiter striking a koy, con? tinue to oscillate until tbe key is raised, tba?' pcodaerag a tremolo apon the note of singular j effect and beauty. These auxiliary hammers are set in motion by a spring wh ch is wound np before playing. A peela! at tte right of tbe ?of*; pedal brings them into play or throws them ont of action at the option of the perform? er, so that the instrument can be aseJ as aa ordinary piano ir desire 1. The oscillating hammers strike the strings at the interval of about a quarter of a second. Persons who hare beared and seen tbs melo-piano pronounce it the most eCeeUve musical instrument ever invented, and declare that it mast entirely su? persede the common piano forte. The instru? ment now in New York is the first and only jone imported Into tbis country. -Oz the 12th instant Generals Sedgwick -and Rosecrans left San Francisco lor Baa Diega to inangjrato th work of building the San Diego and Gila Railroad. Enough of the . capital stock to build tLis road to tbe Gila . River bas already been snbsonbeH, and the .work will te proceeded with at once. CH AK LE ON^ -0 WEDNESDAY MORNING, SEPT. 22, I Tbe Coming State Fair-Be Tja Doing! The State Agricultural and Mechar Society, with oommeadahle spirit, have termined to hold their sixth annual /ail Columbia on the 10th, 11th, and 12th of vetnber next. The importance of this el to revive a lively interest, ia all the inc tries calculated to accelerate the mate progress of our State, cannot be too big estimated. Every South Carolinian she take a personal pride in the movem and see to it that this first attempt to courage the development of our resour after so long a season of prostration, sui ing and depression, is crowned with t cess. The society har? issued a list of p miums, covering a wide scope pf indust; and productions, which they trust will cite many new mind? to engage in a ge rous rivalry to first in their sevc spheres of action. But while the individ may be moved by mere personal' inU>r the influence of thia movement must sur affect our communities, and they, t should be alive to the success of this ? fair in our State since the war. . Column with commendable zeal, i has done moot insure this, and we hope that Chariest with her interest? so largely hanging the prosperity of our State, will not backward in giving her cordial co-ope tion. If her faotors, merchants and i chanics, whose energies are equal to t requirement, will but bestir themselves s lend a helping hand, the plans of the oiety will assuredly be carried out ii manner to do credit to South Carolina c her people. The Kew Opera House, A glance intojhe stately edifice whicl host of busy workmen are so rapidly tra forming into what is to be the Opera Hoi of Charleston, opens to the antieipation the amusement-seeker a new and tempti vista of enjoyment. The grand dimensic of the interior, and the massive scale of t alterations in progress, give assurance the beholder of a structure which, in t essential elements of strength, eonveniet and roominess, xnay well compare with a theatre in the country. It is to be hoj. that the public-spirited proprietor will i snare the outlay required to make t Opera House as elegant and attractive its decorations and appointments as, und the supervision of the accomplished yon archil ect in charge, it is turo to be safe, co modions and comfortable in its general ? rangement. It would, we feel convince bc found in the end a wise and payl policy to fit up the interior ia a stj quite as ornate and elaborate in every d tail as that whioh marks Booth's new the tre in New York City as the most comple and splendid temple of the drama that hi yet been erected in the United State Such ar. Opera House would be sure to bril first jlass entertainments to Charlestoi where suoh entertainments have never y failed to draw first class houses. We aro glad to Lear that sever managers of note are already eager 1 beoome lessees of the Opera Hons Prominent among these is John T. For the well known and popular Bal timor manager, whose companies have alwaj been made up with rare discrimination as taot. We are sure that our people woul welcome and liberally sustain any amusi ment presented under Mr. Ford's auspicei The silver-voiced Brignoli, we hear, is ah negotiating with a view to opening tb building with a season of grand Italia opera. In no event, we trust, will th blunder be committed of placing the Oper House at the command of the wretche Thespians, whose fourth-rate performance have formed the staple of public amuse menta in Charleston since the close of th war. A community of taste and oultur like ours demands amusement of a differ en order. Tbe Reconstruction ox* tale Havanna! and Charleston Railroad. The friends of that important artery o the low country-the Savannah and Charles ton Railroad-are justly gratified at thi vigor displayed by the authorities of thi company in pushing forward the enterprisi of rebuilding the road. The brig Bradshaw which arrived here on Minday, brought e large consignment of railroad iron for thc track, and we learn that a supply amplj sufficient to complete the road has been or pered to be shipped to Charleston and Sa vannah. A locomotive and construction train has been dispatched to the Savannah end of the line via Augusta, and the work of reconstruction will now be energetic illy pressed forward at both ends of the gap. The contractors have undertaken to em? pi?te the road, including the bridge over the Savannah River, by the first of Decem. ber; and, from present appearances, it seems likely that they will be able to keep their word. THI Colombia Pheonix states that Dr. A. G. Mackey has decir \ the professorship in theSeutb Carolina 0 .'varsity, to which he was last week elect; ; jy the Board of Trustees. This is a sensible move on the part of the Doctor, and shows that ho snows a thing or two, even if he ii not specially proficient in the scientit?c branches which ha waa chosen to expound. The Stowe Scandal. The Atlantic Monthly for October is ont, and contains nothing of the half-promised evidence which many persons had anticipa? ted that Mrs. Harriot Beecher Stowe would have adduced in support of her scandalous and revoking statement regarding the rela? tions between' Lord Byron and his half sister, Mrs. Leigh. Considering the storm of merited denunciation which Mrs. Stowe has encountered at the hands of the press, both at home and abroad, it may reasona? bly be assumed as certain that, had she pos? sessed any testimony to sustain her oharge, it would not have been withheld from an incredulous public. It is likely, therefore, that the authenticity of her infamous reve lation must rest in the future solely upon the personal veracity of its author. . In this connection we print.to-day a re? markable letter of Lord- Lindley to the London Times, giving a full account, writ? ten in 1818 by Lady Byron herself, of her relations to her husband. It is supple? mented and confirmed at every point by the reports of one of Lady Byron's most inti? mate friends, drawn from her confidential talk at the time, and taken by Lord Lind? say from Lady Anne Barnard's manu? scripts. These interesting papers, while they are marked by undisguised bitterness towards the poet, and throw new light upon his extraordinary follies and vices, effectu? ally and finally dispose of the suspicion of the crime which has been imputed to him. The Byroa scandal has had its run, and Mrs. Stowe must cast about for some new sensation. Bettual.
