duced at the next mooting of Council, request

A woman and her husband had some words
yesterday. "Ho knew ho was right," aud, as
sho asserted, assaulted her. Tho caso was
carried before a magistrate, but (he assault
was not clearly pro von, whereupon tho wife
got up a "sceno" ou abort notice. Her hus
band has our sympathies.

have no knowledge or its being at alt historic,
or of a mur Jor or two, or auy other crime hav
ing been committed in it to warrant ghostly
manifestations. Yot there it stands, accredit
ed with all tho mystery whicli over attache*
to a houso supposed to contain incorporeal in
habitants. Women and children avoid it in
tho daytime, aud the men who livo in that sec
tion havo loarned that, at nii?bt, tho "iiearoet
way 'round is the shortest way homo."
As a publication of tho locality of tho bou-.o
might he of injury to its owners, wo retrain.

ly advertised in tho "To Rent" column, and as
frequently wae rented, but tho renters did not
remain in possession long. Tho longest pe

it to romain idle. A young man who didn't

observed in.a room ol the house with a bottle
of tho ardent and two revolvers, laying in wait
for ghostly intrudors. Thus ho remained until

and then went to sloop. Not long did ho slum
ber. A noise aroused him. nc aroae and
walked to tbo window, aud saw two womun

wards the home. They boro a chain, and, aa
soon aa thoy got upon tho hack porch, com

Hoping to catch thorn in tho uct, our hero
crept down stairs, but, while passing through
tho hall, made a noiso which a armed tho wo
men and off thoy went at a rate most surprising
to our watcher. Ho pursued, hut did not
overtake them, and, with tho exception of
knowing that tlicy wore rod garters?their
rapid pace and tho wtud allowing him oppor*
tuiiitics of observation?ho bos uo clue wbat
ovor for identification purposes.
Boing convinced that the rattling of chains
and shuffling of feet heard by the former occu
pants was occasioned by tbeso or other women,
aud that tho alleged mysterious opening and
abutting of looked doors was only tho effect of
tho imagiuations of the timid occupants, the
watcher retired to rest, determined Ibat on (tin

tion be was constantly asking himself, "What
is tbo object of these women in frightening off
tho occupants of this houso ?" At an early
hour be arose, loft tho houso, and about ten
o'clock circulated among the women who lived
in Iho neighborhood?of a class popularly do

cious questioning ho ascertained that tbero
woa in tho lot of the haunted houso an excel
lent well of water. From this well tbo neigh
bors had to obtain water or send a long dis
tanco for it, and thon got a poor article at that.
When the houso was vacated tboy had free use
of tho well, but when occupied they wcro not
permitted to obtain water oven for drinking
purposes. To keep tho house vacant was evi
dently to thoir interest, and thoy took up tho
ghost method, which was a "success" until a
man who had common sense enough uot to be
lieve in ghosts agreed to occupy tho houso and
ascertain for himsoll whether thoro wero such
visitants. Tho neighbors thought he wus to
bo au occupant and tried their game upon him,
with tho result above stated.

yesterday. The iemains, which arrived by
the Northeaster.i Railroad, wcro takou to
Mount Ploasautfor interment, Uolonel Shing
ler's career os a public man, a citizen aud a sol
dier ia well-known to most of our readers, and
hia death, while in tho prim-; of manhood, will
bo deeply deplored. A native of Charleston
District, he camo to ths city as a youth and
?llcd a position in tbo oflko of Mr. Daniol
Horlbcck, then clork of tbo court. This ho
retained until the eloction of nia fatbot', Colonel
8. B. Shinglor, to tho sheiiffalty, when he be
came ohiof clork in that offi;o. Aftor tho ex
piration of bis fathot's t*rm, ho himself be
came a candidate Tor office, but was defeated
by Mr. J. D. Yates. He subsequently oc
cupied tho position of teller in tho Planters'
and Mechanics' Bank. Iu '56 or 57 he formed
a copartnership with his brother and con
ducted a brokerage and -banking bouse in
Broad-street. Ho had retired from business,
however, beforo the war and engaged in plant
ing iu Berkeley District, near Gooso Crook, and
was elected senator ia the State Legislature
from that section. Upon tho first muttoringa
of war, bo was elected a member of tbe Seces
sion Convention. Being thoroughly imbuod
with the dominant spirit of tin State, he took
an active port in the war, and rose to the posi
tion of Ueatenant-colonol of tho Holcombo
Legion. Whilo in command of a portion of
the South Carolina cavalry, iu the Virginia
array, ho mado eorao brilliant sorties that
struck terror into the enemy. Aftor the wnr
Colonel Mi in gier resumed his planting opera
tions, tnd also served nB senator in tbo Hist
session of tho Slato Lcgisiataro. Having con
tracted a malarious fever, it assumed a vira
ient type and falling upon tho lungs, changed
to consumption, to whir li he fell c victim, At tho

EdgeQold District, on the evening of the 8th
instant, a whito man named O'Donnell was re
turning homo, whon he was shot in tho back.
He was found next morning still alive, bat ig
norant of tbe parpetrator of Ihe deorL Dr
Pragit, near whoso house ho was shot, has
taken him ia and is caring for him.
City Taxes.?Attention is directed to an ad
vortisemont of tho City Treasurer, notifying
all taxpayers that tho last instalment on real
estate is doe this month, and if not paid the
properly will bo advertised for sale, net only
in tbo city papers, bat throughout the State.
Delinquent taxpayers should nuke a note of
this fact and govern themselves accordingly.
