to boltove that Senator Snmner, who is to pro
side at tho Massachusetts Republican Stato
Convention at Worcester, on tho 22d instant,

present coudition of public affairs. Ho is
known to bo dissatisSod with tho present atti
tude of the administration on the foreign ques
tions, Cuba and Alabama claims, and will
strongly oppose any movement for tho recog

ThO Immigrants.
Tho Nowberry Immigration Society ie
still ne lively pushing forward the important
work which it inaugurated last year with
so much success. A letter from Mr. T. 8.
Boinest, the president of the sooiety, an
nounces that it- has air.;.ly brought in
about three hundred immigrants, the largo
majority of whom have proved excellent
laborers. Iu view of the probable scarcity
of labor next year, the sooiety anticipates
more orders for immigrants than it will be
able to All. Those who wish to obtain
I laborers through this channel axe therefore
urged to file their orders as soon as possi
ble. The Booiety's agent will go to GaBtlo
Garden early in November and remain
j there until near the end of December, and
secure all the laborers who can be induced
to come South; and these will be given to
parties who have ordered, the operations of
the sooiety being conducted upon the "first
oome?first served" principle. It is hoped
that some of tho immigrants will be sent on
as early as the middle of November, eo as
to be of servico in securing the ootton crop.
Negotiations are now in progress to induce
all the railroads in tho State to transport
immigrants at reduced rates. God speed

News offered a mild suggestion that an op
portunity bo given to a picked orew of the
lusty black oarsmen of our sea islands to
show what they oould do in one of their
own peoultar raoc-boats in a contest of
power, endurance and skill, with the oraok
crews who claim to represent in ils perfec
tion the rowing soienoe of the two conti
nents. Wo know that the trained boatmen
of the plantations, whose lives had been
spent on the water, had acquired a style of
rowing whioh, previous to tho war, had been
the wonder aod admiration of all strangers
who were oompetent to judge of suoh mat
ters, and we had hoped that no mawkish
prejudice as to "raoe, color or previous con
dition" would -have denied to "the man
"and brother" the ahanoe to assert his
Olalm to the ohampionship of the oar. Onr
proposition was reproduced in the North
ern papers with various comments; but
nothing ever oame of it, and no invitation
w?b extended to Coffee to take part In tho
Great Race. We understand, however, that
a Northern gentleman of means, who is
extensively engaged in planting on the sea
islands, struok with the remarkable speed
whioh he saw attained by aime of the ne
gro boatmen in his employ,' bas now deter
