In addition to the land purchased the right to build piers into deep water was also acquired, and it is de? signed to build a series of wharves each two hundred feet wide and five hundred feet long. ! Arrangements will be made ateo for Jerrying loaded cars across th? Hodson, and railroad tracks are to be laid the ontiro length of each of the piers. The property acquired is con? siderably mere than a mile from the present terminus of the road, and the connection with the old track is to be made by means of an elevated rcilway running from the core to Ber? gen cut. It will ba built at first for double track, but will be so constructed that addi? tional tracks may be provided fer without too .great expense. CHARLESTON. -o FRIDAY MORNING, AUGUST 6, 1869. Trie Humboldt Jubilee. We are glad to leam that oar German fellow-citizens have taken the initiatory eteps to secure a proper celebration of the centennial birthday of Alexander ron Hum? boldt, on the 14th of September next. True, the time is short, but the countrymen of Humboldt can improvise a celebration, a jubilee, a Sohuo'senfesL/a See tiger kr?nz, or bal-masque, in less time than any other peo? ple we ' know bf. So, we may be sure be forehand, that the Germana of Charleston .rill acquit themselves next month, as thsy have always done, whenever called upon to ;ommemorate the glory of tneir glorious Fatherland. We eau hardly expect, of loarse, a celebration snob as waa witnessed ?ere NovemberTl and 12, 1859, when the 3erm ina of Charleston had made prepara iona for many.months to-do suitable honor r? their national bard. That Sohillerfest waa brilliant beyond precedent, in oar staid Did city, where proccasions and festal ex aibuions are but of rare occurrence. Still, j wa have no doubt, the Germana of Charles ion will not fall behind' their fellow citizen? in other cities of the Union, ia admiration j for their distinguished co un Ty m en, and .heir zeal, alacrity and enthusiasm, will in- , mre a very creditable celebration. The Germane, surely, cannot be held un- i grateful to those of their countrymen who ' kare shed lustra on their native land. 1 Qther nations Vie in the homage t rf ey pay lo their victorious 'captains, but the Oer- 1 mana stand pre-eminent -ia the. profound ] respect ia which they cherish the memory of those of their great min, whoas claim "ra distinction Ilea in the important services they rendered to mankind in the nobler i arts .of pease. They hold dear: the memory of Gutenberg and of Lather, of L?seing and of Goethe, of Schiller and of Hum? boldt. ' 1 Kerr is it from the I Learned only that this f grateful incense'ia offered. Ia this espe- j cully, the difference between the Germans ( and other people, redounds to the credit of , the former, . The heart of the entire nation, ? prince /and. peasant, -, professor and plough - ? man, the: wise and the simple, all feel en- 1 ricked and ennobled, by the' achievements ; of any of their countrymen in the field of , science, ofart, orof.letters; and wheresc- ; ever beat German hearts, whether in B ji? lin, Vienna, Paris,'St. Petersburg, New ' York,- San FranclEco, or Constantinople, i they ' alt join with one accord, with heart j and soul, to aing praises and do honor, to ( those who hare won a' right to wear the crown of laurels. 1 So familiar in the name and fame of Hum? boldt, throughout the civilized world, that i we seed not refer in detail lo the triumphs ? which marked his distinguished career. We ( shalt have'ocoMion to return, to this subject i?xt month, when. the celebration of ?he c Centennial Jubilee will have awakened a , freehand lively interest in the career of 1 .he great naturalist. t We translate, from the "S?dlicher Cor- " respondent," the German paper published in- this ci y, the following remarks, to show ' ?ar readers what rank. Humboldt takes imong savana in the estimation of his own sonntrymen. : Alexander von Humboldt, the broth- 1 sr of the great philosopher, Wilhelm ron Humboldt, accomplished in the field sf natural science, what Lasing, Wie? land, Scoubartb, Goethe, Schiller, and the brothers Schlegel did for literature and philosophy. His clear and comprehensive mind was ooapled with a desire to observe and explore, and an indefatigable zeal, un dismayed by difficulties, geographical or topographical. He built a oolossal super? structure npon the foundation, which had been laid by bia teachers in Frieberg (in the celebrated mining school in Saxony ) He aim d nt a knowledge of the who e ( earth; he left (he field of speculative philoso i phy, and cultivated the rca iud promising J soil of natural science He opened the .' boek of Nature, read it zealously and at tentivelv, learned it page by pa?,e, chapter i by chapter, 'voium- aft er volume; and whit- ; soever he had read, whatever he had learned from Na'ure, he gave back sg?a, not only to scienc?, upon which a new light was thus sued, but he proclaim?! it to th ? whole world, which lamed lo profitable account his txperiet.ee and obsei valions, in ihe in ! crease cf its commerce and the inirrove- i ment of its useful arts. It was Alex md er von Humboldt who set the world in a different hght te the specu? lative savana and philosophers. They threw their old empiric il learning into a orner and turst the fetters of their musty tradt tioav whicl they had g-vhered togeiher from the booka on magic, alchemy and as trology. Such hnd been their t cie?e; Bat it was to be so no ioncer. Natural scier.ee became free, and developed into a mighty tree, which: bore abundantly the fruit of knowledge. Geology, now first, at fained to the digui'y of a practical rcteucf ; chemistry and botany contributed mate ri illy to the emcscipiucn of medicine from '? Che elough of empirijiem, in which it lay ! hopelessly imbedded; and technology, the, parent of the modern industrial arts, then first came into being. Indastry is the key? stone of modern civilization, and no one man certainly has contributed 80 mush to placing Industry on the lefty pedestal she now occupies-more especially in America -as Alexander von Humboldt. A VEST interesting exhibit is contained in the reports of the Home and School of j the Southern Educational Aid Society, printed in another part of to-day's NEWS. A heavy debt cf gratitude is due from our community to the City of Baltimore, for the noble manner in which she has established and virtually sustained this excellent in? stitution; and th? energy, ability and seal with which the Rev. A. Toomer Porter has labored to place the Home upon a sound basis, ia worthy of all praise. TUE August number of the Nineteenth Century is quite np to the standard of its predecessors in interest and liveliness. In several of the departments we notice evi? dences that the editorial staff of the maga? zine has been strengthened by new con? tributors. Wo are glad to see that the "sooty-graphs," which were never to our taste, are now omitted. Mem JDubUrat ona. JgUSSELL'S BOOK STORE. . WEEKLY LIST NEW BOOKS, &c.
