When the whole Mackey family ia poured st ons timo into the lap of Columbi a it is evident that something ts up -^fthat the wheel of politics is revolving the wrong way or is ont of order, and the v desire to pat s nail in it to stop it, or to reverse the "order of its going." THE LATE RIOT.-The investigation in the -cases of the parties charged with being con? nected with the late riot was resumed yester? day before Magistrates Kanapaux and De Large. Rifo Izzird, colored was committed to jail to await trial before the State Court for committing an assault and battery, and also tx assault iug an officer. Mr. Schwing gave bond to appear before the same court, to answer the oharge of assault with a deadly weapon. The investigation will be continued until the affair is thoroughly sifted. BasAK OH THB COLUMBIA AND AUGUSTA RAILROAD.- Tbe late heavy rains caused a sud? den rise in the small el reams in the neighbor? hood of the Bath Paper Mills, and a culvert on the Columbia and Augusta Railroad was blown up by the force of the water, and a large por? tion of the road bed washed away. Fortu? nately the tracks of the Columbia sud Augusta and the South Carolina Railroads run parallel at this point, and the passengers and baggage by the former are transferred to the latter at Granite vd le. Tho waa h is quite large, and it will probably be ten days to two weeks before the road can be put in running order. LITTLE BUBO LABS.-Yesterday morning the detectives arrested a mulatto and a negro boy -.neither over twelve years of age-upon tbe charge of burglary. The negro boy confessed that upon Friday night be, by means of a step . ladder procured and placed in position by the mulatto boy, forcibly entered the store of Messrs. Geo. W. Stroub & Co., No. 277 King street, and forced open the money drawer and stole a small sum of money. Early Sunday morning they, by the same means, entered the confectionery store of Mr. Kinsman, adjoining the store above mention? ed. While they were attempting to open the money drawer here the watchman came up and succeeded in arresting the little negro. He "peached" and caused the arrest of his ac? complice. Yesterday afternoon a negro woman named Betsy Holland, a bo nt ^rWrty years of age, was arraigned before Justice Mackey, charged with committing t murderous assault upon John Jones, colored. It appears that John believed with Thacke? ray that eaoh separate soul of us is an island in the great ocean of life, and looked for a fel? low isle willing to help build a causeway which should bind his and said isle together forever. Believing that Betsy was the other isle and marriage to be the causeway that would ac? complish this desirable object, he made up to Betsy, who, not liking to be sought after, so informed John. But John, like other men, only valuing those prizes which require some labor to secure, persisted in his desi ?-os upon her hand. Yesterday a fte moos, after a little quarrel, and while John was standing with his back to her, she seized a large fork and en? deavored to impale bim but he fled she pur? suing. OB the way she seized a rake and struck him a severe blow on the forehead, breaking the flesh and inflicting a very painful wound. John ran into tbe bouse, when she followed and made another assault upon him with a knife. He then dodged and ran to? warri the kitchen, when she seized a pot of soup and threw it over him. He then went to the pump to wash bis wound, and was again assaulted by the fiend. While before the Magistrate, Betsy said that she "didn't have any use for men; they was treacherous animals; I never did like 'em. and I don't see why they keep a court in' of me." in default of bail in the sum of $300 to appear, for trial? she was committed to jail. While on her way there in charge of a constable, she met John, whereupon she crabbed a stick and went tor him, but he was fortunate enough to elude the clutches of the she-deviL CRUMBS.-The dosing exercises of the paro? chial school of the African M. E. Church, un? der the direction of B. H. Cain, took place in Liberty Hall yesterday. Daddy Cain expresses the opinion in the Missionary Record that it ts not at all strange that the Mayor should be "powerless" to quell a riot, "surrounded as he has been, and still ia, with all the deadheads of the Republican party to bear op, and with a Copperhead in his bosom stinging him to death, while bis li fe is bsnging on a sledder thread of political hemp." Tbe Lieutenant of the Detective force states that he, net the Mayor, appointed the officers of his force-the Mayor only coofltmed the appointments. The Savannah Advertiser says that the pres? ence of mosquitoes there is as "fully demoral? izing to one's analytical sequence of ideas as the negroes of Charleston to good clothes and good temper." The sergeant who was shot at Castle Pindi ney Saturday, was still in a most critical con? dition last evening.
